In 1973 I worked at the Marquee Club on Wardour St; I was 18 and a barman. I met Rod, Elton and Long John Baldry. Baldry used to bring his pet goat into the club on a chain! @@purplecowideal Too true. Millions and millions of record sales, worldwide. A career spanning 60 years and still packing the venues. I first saw him, in The Bromel Club, in Bromley, in 1964, when he was Long John's unknown backing singer. (Saw Reg in the same year, btw). Long John's throat was playing up so Rod did the second set (bands did 2 sets, with an interval in those days, in the clubs) and blew us away - singing R'n'B, Soul and Blues. saw him a number of times over the years. As for other recognition - a knighthood, in the UK isn't at all insignificant and not many rock artists have it.

For everyone, if you can get it online or go to your nearest library and request it, the memoir that Rod Stewart did several years ago is absolutely wonderful. Chapter by chapter he goes through his life and loves chronologically. The book is very well written and it's the kind of thing that if you ever had the chance to meet him you'd say to him, "I read your memoir and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Thank you for many years of great music!" I finally saw him in 2007...

A story in it ( as memory serves ) he actually had throat cancer and couldn't sing for 6 months and wasn't sure if he'd ever get it back. After 6 mos brought his band to his garage and each day he'd sing a little, then a little more til it strengthened.
