My ex was Paul's cousin, and so, while we were dating he asked me if I'd like to meet him! After I came to, I grabbed his shirt collar and told him he better not be teasing me. Turns out he wasn't. We went to his home on Mulholland drive and had dinner with him and his family. He came in the door not long after we arrived and gave a shout out to his mom, "Mom, I'm home!" JUST LIKE on the Donna Reed show!!!!! He was exactly like he was on the program! I was star struck for weeks afterward! He really is a nice guy.

I remember seeing this on tv. It made me cry then, and still makes me cry now at 65 years of age. My dad died when I was 20 in the Marines in 1967 and couldn't make it back in time to see him before he was buried. I came very close to joining him. I loved my dad very much! Thanks for posting this, I can barely see through my tears. Thanks Paul...

Yep. One TV. Family together. Shared values. Bonding. Family time. Shows with values. Can't imagine growing up and NOT having experienced entertainment that belonged to my parents: Sid Caesar, Milton Berle, Bob Hope...and the "Road" pictures, Red Skelton, Jack E. Leonard, Jack Benny, Jack Paar, Steve Allen, and all those great 'family' shows, too numerous to mention. Ours were The Rifleman and Bonanza.

My old man was of that generation. He died when he was 42 and I was 16, about the same ages as Carl Betz and Paul Petersen here. So much I never got to tell him or ask him. We never got to drink a beer or argue as men do. He never met my wife or played with this grandchildren. I never got to say goodbye. So if your dad is still alive, why not give him a call... just say "Hey pop..." It will mean the world to him.

I used to watch the Donna Reed show and Loretta Young with my mom when I was very little. My Dad died when I was 4. I used to sing this song. My Dad was pure gold. I remember finding him fixing a swing that he had strung up from the garage rafters for me. One side had come down and I forgot to tell anyone. I opened the back door and there he was on a ladder fixing my swing and I literally caught my breath thinking how my dad was fixing my swing and I didn’t ask him to! My heart swelled and thought to myself, my dad is such a good person! The swing was jangling around while he worked on it and I thought “I’m going to help him” and I sat on the swing to keep it from moving. He just kept on working fixing my swing while holding up my 4 year old self. I felt so proud he was my dad.

What a blessing to live in such a turbulent but beautiful world. All of the people here and their comments make the healing tears flow with gratitude. The world is not "going to hell in a hand basket" as it had been said. The hearts, minds and souls of humans are still alive and well all over the world. Although I am a woman this song was always special to me because of my relationship with my dad. As a daddys girl at the age of 38 some 21 yrs ago as he lay dying from cancer I held his hand, carresed his tear streeked cheek and sang this song to him. Thank you Paul for this wonderful song. What a wonderful way to say I love and goodbuy.

Hi Rodan, we had rehearsed this song (on a 45 rpm record) for my dad's homecoming in 1967; I was just a kid. We then learned that he was "delayed". A day later, an official military vehicle stopped at our house. I remember watching three neatly dressed people at the door, a squadron friend, the base chaplain, and the officers wives' club chair-lady. He was reported missing (MIA) over Vietnam on the first of May, 1967. I never listened nor understood that song until this day. Thank you for the memories, thank you for the innocence and freedom of a time long lost, thank you for the closure; this means a lot to me (and many others, I am sure). I never had a chance to share the words of this song with him. May God bless all the fathers of the world, Ciao, L (Veteran).

Mine too, but from envy, as I never had a Dad. He walked out of my family's lives with a suitcase in one hand and a bottle of booze in the other, while I was still a small baby. I have gone through my life with this 'Daddy' sized hole in my soul. Shit happens, I guess.

OMG, thank you for uploading this song! I bought this song on a 45 record when it first came out and played it for my dad when I was probably 12 years old. He loved it!! lol I came here to look for this song and didn't think I would find it on here. What a treasure. Wish everyone could have had a wonderful father like I did. He has been gone for 7 years now and life is so different without him!

My Dad died in 1970. He was 40 - sudden cardiac arrest. I was 15yo. I could not find any songs then - except this one. I own the 45, tracked down years back in an OLD record store. I never got the chance to thank him, or say goodbye. I was shocked to find that someone had actually posted this - it means the world - so thanks a ton!

Thank you for posting this piece.I may be a sentimental fool, but I would not want to be any different. If I was unable to reminisce,- and enjoy my recollections of my life's special moments and times, I'd be a sad man.Sometimes, songs like this from early childhood,(61 yrs old now),can even cause me to weep, but the sore eyes I feel at those times are always due to happiness,-the happiness of being human, and the wonderful gift that it is.I was blessed with a fine man for my father, and this song could just as easily be about him too. A happy and good life to all!

One of the BEST episodes ever that hasn`t been released yet as of this date(9/16/11). It originally aired Oct. 25,1962- Season 5, Episode 6. I can`t wait until it`s realeased. One of the most touching episodes ever on TV. In the episode, Jeff`s dad, Alex never had time for him and they had had a little tiff. Hopefully Season 5 of The Donna Reed Show will be out on DVD soon. Thanks for posting!

My father died in 1970 when I was 6 and he was just 33. This song did a lot to help get me through it. I would listen to it over and over again. So much, in fact, that 51 years later, it still takes me to a place of sadness and then healing when I hear it. And believe me, it's on my phone, my computer, and on several different CDs so I can hear it whenever I want to and wherever I happen to be.
