Rode NTG2 v Sennheiser MKE600 - which mic sounds better?

I was looking for a comparison of the NTG2 and the MKE600. Imagine my surprise when your channel came up! You did some video tape transfers for me a few years ago, and I literally live 200 yards away from your studio!

Hello sir, great great video.. i got a really good pair of sony headphones and was able to notice the differences.. im buying the MKE 600 after hearing this video. can you make an outside comparison..? meaning outdoors

At the beginning of the video the sound was somewhat muffled, possible gain was lower. When you went back to the wireless at the end of the video the sound was much clearer not muffled. The Rode mic seemed to have more "bass" but very clear. The Sennheiser appeared to have more treble and again very clear. Really a great review with switching between the three. Well done Bob. The DJI sounds very muffled and does not appeal to me. The Rode NTG 2 (I have one) is "bassy" and not as distinct as the Sennheiser. The MKE600 sounds the best in my opinion. Maybe I am biased since I have worked as a professional sound engineer since the 70's with the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation. I don't have the MKE600 but some ME64's as well. They are outstanding among other Sennheiser microphones like the MD 21 and MD421. So, I go for the Sennheiser in this comparison. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Great video, thanks. The difference is amazing. A lot of people do non-scientific tests. If you did more scientific tests, it might help your videos stand out.

I’m actually looking at the sennheiser MKE 600 over the rode ntg2 for a studio Mic

I'm looking to move up from my ntg2 soon. I like the sound but the floor noise (hiss) is really loud compared comparable to the floor noise of the old Rode iPhone lapel mic. Really hissy. I'm looking for soothing I can used to get wild sound for my animation. The hissing is really annoying me now I've got a good studio micm

Hi to my ears, the DJI mike sounded a lot worse than either your Rode or Sennheiser shotguns. Also, quality of sound from both improved notably when you got closer. Overall I preferred the MKE 600 for clarity with the Rode a tad base heavy IMO. I don't yet have enough experience to properly assess but suspect that your converted shop (c/w glass cabinets etc) is a far from ideal environment. Perhaps you might benefit from dragging in a duvet, rug or using proper sound blankets?

Old comment, but I would say it makes more sense to test things in an imperfect environment rather than having a sound deadened room, because I think most people will not be using these things in an optimal environment and the design of the mic is specifically to reject reflected/outside of target sounds. As for the mics, the MKE600 is a better mic for spoken sounds - per many tests, and I'm saying this as an owner of an NTG2 heh, I might upgrade to MKE600 actually but I'm on the fence because of the price VS difference heh. Regarding the DJI it sounded fairly bad to me too, but then it's a cheap capsule mic so not surprised. You can get a better mic for that too, but again price/performance is questionable, Zoom LMF-2 is a decent lav that is cheap relatively speaking, but really good ones go into 2-300$/€ range. I use LMF-2 because it's quite good and it's like 30-40$/€. Everything is a price/performance calculation, there are lav mics for 2000$/€ that have excellent sound - but I wouldn't buy one even if I had unlimited budget I think, because the difference between those and ones for a couple of hundred is something only 1% hear.
