also the videomic go is on a bracket: unscrew the cold shoe, move it back on the bracket, screw it tight again. no viewfinder interference.

The entire reason for a shotgun mic is to be able to capture sound from a distance. Your review setup was great but I was so dissapointed you didn't do any distance testing. A mic sounding great with your face right next to the mic isn't a real world test.

+kanukster Thanks man, this helped me so much. I had wobble in my mic and the 4 connector pins would show from how loose it was. Once I swapped the placement and tightened the lower screw, the mic no longer jiggles on the mount.
@thejoshh58
@thejoshh58 6 жыл бұрын
You can actually make the videomic go sit further forward on top of the camera by undoing the little screw inside the shoe mount which lets you pop the whole mount off and reposition the pins to one of 3 positions (further forward, standard position or further back). Just a little tip if you need to use the EVF on the camera :)

+DSLR Video Shooter P.S- Caleb.. Really random, but I really loved your camera movements @0:22 . I know, these are really plain movements, but were they handheld? Or was the camera attached to a certain rig as you moved? I like those little shakes, and I got a feeling that its handheld, and just feels different since its not a DSLR. It's a mirrorless, which is lighter..and that's why the movements feel different. :]

Thank you very much for this very informative review. I lean towards the PRO, but I have a few questions, hopefully you can shed some light on them: 1) Would the PRO be compatible with an external PC sound card? Or does it need to be powered by a camera? How about the GO? 2) I would use it for Vlogs, so do I have to stand right in front of the mic, or being sometimes on the left and right sides of the mic, and/or further back from it (1m) would decrease the recording quality? Thank you.

the +20 db option in the video mic pro should give you the ability to increase the signal-to-noice-ratio (SNR). almost every mic input in the cameras are noisy as hell and have very low audio. that means if you have to make the sound louder in post, you would also make the noise louder if your snr is too bad. so, this is where the +20 db comes in: you can set the input mic level that low that it won't come to an increasement of the noise when you possibly have to make the audio louder in postproduction.

Thank you for the video. I was actually comparing these two mics having bought a Go and we're picking up lots of unwanted background noise, not just noise but possibly interference, I was hoping that you were going to demonstrate this and confirm our findings. It seems like the Pro is just the better option, and the powered boost is going to help record interviews out in the wild but I guess hesitant that the interference problem is the camera or mobile interference, etc.

So I recognise that this is more a video made with relation to external mic's on DSLR's, but I have a GoPro Hero 5 which I decided to change to an external mic recently. The Rode Videomic Go is what I bought, and on the first recording it immediately captured the dreaded clicking caused by wifi/RF interference. I turned off the Wireless Connection in the preferences on the GoPro and it immediately went away. I'd have gone with the Pro but it's out of the budget.

In your demonstration you say that the Go sits too far back preventing the use of the viewfinder but the mic is not needed when taking photos, only video so there is no need to put your face up to viewfinder when recording videos vs photo, in which case the Go is perfect for use with all DSLRs.

As a professional audio engineer I don't have much good to say about Rode's products. Have you tried Sennheiser's MKE 600 battery powered shotguns? The rejection tube is about 2 times longer, so they "reject" off-axis noise much better. These are super clean and, in my biased view, MUCH more interesting sounding than mere voice... In fact, I have found that these mic's actually allow the Canon 5d Mk III's weak pre-amps to actually sound acceptable. I suggest you move "up" to more pro gear if you want to hand out advice to the learning crowd. Yeah, they cost more.

It was the Pro using +20, not the Go as stated in the video and by the onscreen text.

Great review! Thanks for that. I purchased the Video Mic Pro and I'm very satisfied with it. Still looking for a good tutorial how to eliminate the background hiss it captures without deteriorating the original sound.

Question, Caleb! Which Videomic Pro version did you test here? I heard there was a newer version with an improved shockmount and slightly better audio (and also slightly higher price). Still a great informative video. I currently own a Zoom H1 which I've been booming on every of my shorts, I really love the sound that I'm getting but it's definitely not easy with the levels so since I don't really want to upgrade to a H4N or any other XLR inputs recorder, I guess the Rode Videomic is the best jack microphone I can get to improve my current audio setup, do you agree?

TrickyFrench There is a new one out (linked in the description) There might be a few quality upgrades in sound quality, but I honestly doubt it is substantially better. Sweet mount though!

Thanks for the mic review, it was very informative. It definitely helped with my decision - ended up with the pro with the Rycote Lyre suspension.

Great review. I have the VideoMic Pro and I have forgotten to turn it on more than once... fortunately I usually have an external mic recording. And yes, I also drained the battery because I didn't turn it off. It's so easy to forget. The camera could send a warning when it doesn't have any sound coming in!...

Thank you so much! I am no almost certain I will purchase the Mic Go with the Canon 700D. I am planning to make sketch/cinematic videos on KZbin, documentaries and travelling videos so I think that the Go is the right choice :)

I do vlogs and I want the exact same setup as you. I think that the Videomic Go does an awesome job for the price but I saw several times that the deadcat is highly recommended for this one

I had a 750D and a videomic GO for Christmas and honestly the Go does a pretty great job for the price and is really easy to use (plug and it works). The difference is already huge than with the "onboard" mic

God SCOOP the no battery is a huge advantage... I know me and I'm pretty sure I would forget to change it everytime needed ... The Go is a really great option 👍🏻👍🏻 have fun on your vlogs man

@Joris Dietz Yeah as a fellow vlogger, I have to say the Video Mic GO is one of the best options for low budgets. I used the Video Micro before, and it doesn't even compare! xD

Great tips. Thanks for that. 2 questions please: 1) do these mic work on iPhone 6s? 2) to still get good sound quality, how far can the subject go from the mic?
