Hi Max, I'm Max too haha. Thanks for the incredible review. My opinion: Audio-wise they're the same, the Plus just sounds a bit louder and recording maybe a bit more noise from the environment. But I think if on the same level, both would be almost the same. Hardware-wise: the Plus is waaaaay better. Even if you own the second version of the non-Plus, the Plus is so much better because of the cable and especially the battery. My solution: I own the V2 non-Plus and will stick with that for now. Nevertheless the Plus offers awesome features and maybe I will upgrade within one or two years.

I've been on the fence about this mic. I just use the Mic J 044 plugged into my G85, it sounds decent. Do you think think the Rode plus would be much of an upgrade? Or possibly sound worse since it will be a few feet away from my mouth for vlogs? Next time you talk to a Panasonic rep, ask them to lower their DB in a firmware update to at least -20. Fuji did it ;)

Hi Max, I know you're talking about the videomic pro +, but I'm in a huge dilemma. I am a filmmaker who is dedicated to making documentaries and short films. I currently have an a6300, and I need a second camera. I would not bother to work a little more to match the colors of my a6300 with a gh5 thinking that it has different features like an excellent slow camera or unlimited recording, but perhaps it is a better idea to buy an a6500 to have a complete match. What do you recommend me Since you have both thank you very much (Excuse my English, it is not my native language)

Thanks Max for the great comparison. All of your reviews hit so many points that are really relevant to the way I shoot that I don't hear anywhere else. @JakeBorg4 жыл бұрын
A nice review! Unfortunately the audio levels are not matched so it's very hard to make a fair comparison between the two microphones. The Pro+ is a couple of decibels louder in this video, but it doesn't mean it's better. You need to match the audio levels so you can get an even comparison. I dowloaded the audio and there's about 3-4db difference between the takes. Especially noticeable outdoors if you listen to the background noise. If I would buy the Pro+, I would go for the features. Thank you for a nice video! Jake

Hi Max, I'd like your opinion please. I'm thinking of using the Rode Videomic Pro Plus in a rig to act as an external mic for a GoPro camera and also for a Sony RX100-M4. When using the GoPro camera, I will connect it directly using the 3.5 mm cable, and when using the Sony, which does not have an input, I will connect the Rode Pro Plus to my Tascam DR-44WL as an external mic and sync the audio and video in post using Final Cut 10.3.3. The material being recorded will be acoustic guitar and vocals. What do you think of this set up? The Videopro plus is a little large and I was considering the Rode Videomicro except I really want the best quality. For my purposes, would you go with the Plus or go with the older version of Pro since it's a little smaller? Thanks for your opinion.

Wow hard choice. The Pro+ seems to have more gain but also more noise. I thought it might be that the Pro had better side/ambient rejection but in the interior test the Pro+ seemed to pick up less echo. So is that Pro+ noise from the +20db gain function (vs the Pro +10db)? I didn't detect the Pro+ noise in the interior and boom tests though the additional gain was still there. Is there an explanation for the noise during the Pro+ exterior test? After switching to headphones I noticed the noise was there on the Pro as well but it was a little quieter. I'm guessing it was from the HVAC unit on the house behind you?

Does it gain anything by using the XLR1 microphone unit on the GH5 to raise the unit higher, to overcome the problem with getting your eye to the viewfinder, and then plugging the 3.5 mm jack into a 3.5 mm to XLR adapter straight into the XLR1? This bypasses the cameras preamp, and allows you to use the viewfinder, rather than an adapter plate? Just curious!

I got mine few weeks ago and used it already on a few shoots, and the auto on/off is really good and worth upgrading for me. The only con for me is the size, when packing it in the backpack takes almost twice as much space as the vmp v1, so I was thinking of replacing the foam windscreen with the one from the v1 or v2 with the rycote (which is a bit bigger than the v1 but still smaller than the vmp+)

Very good review. I was actually considering Pro Plus, but the protrusion is a deal breaker. What were they thinking?! The battery compartment on the regular pro is terrible! I felt like I was going to break the mic trying to close that compartment the first time I used it. Pro Plus has some nice features, but it really doesn't need to be so big, and the protrusion... Is there a good mic with MORE gain or a flexible gain adjustment? Have you reviewed Zoom H1? It seems like a cheaper alternative to Rode that may have even better sound and internal gain control.

Very good. I think there are a lot of good features. The sound on the Pro+Plus sounded a bit more high quality, like it has more amps behind it making a cleaner sound, but at the same time, there is a bit of reverb in there, that made it harder to understand what your saying. And your right, the cord placement was a bad idea.

The Pro Plus is 3D Omni-directional. Will that fit with the HC-V800? Just think of the V800's 5.1 and Omni-directionality. That can easily capture 5.1 sound systems from the center of a room quite nicely.
@digitalmagick5 жыл бұрын
Another feature that was missed on the VideoMic Pro+, You can disable the auto-power sensing by pressing the two buttons in the combination not shown. The power and the high pass filter pressed together will cause all lights to flash once, or three times. If it flashes once, auto-power is enabled, if it flashes three times, it's manual power on/off. This was useful when using with a pocket audio recorder that was causing it to power off the moment I tried to record.

The Rode manual says the Auto Power feature will ONLY work if the camera supplies plug-in power. I tried connecting a mic to a Canon XA20 camcorder and a Canon Vixia HF R72 and the auto power feature did not work. Do Canon camcorders generally not provide plug-in power? Just some DSLR cameras? Who can provide information on this?
@4xoverland6 жыл бұрын
The PLUS's plug is poorly placed and interferes with one's forehead when attached on top of a DSLR or mirrorless. Its a fatal flaw in its design. Busy shopping for such a mic right now and really frustrated by this as the pro+ ticked all other boxes for me.
@tobyntoby5 жыл бұрын
I'm in the same boat, and initially thought the plug placement was wrong. But then when you think about it, instead of the viewfinder you're going to use the camera's LCD screen or a gimbal (again, not the viewfinder) most of the time anyway, so that would not be much of an issue, for me at least. The physical size of the pro+ though, that's something to think about when you want to travel light and discreet.
@Senioritis0123 жыл бұрын
Just finished two video shoots with the Pro+ on the a7sii. Using a gimbal means the plug placement is perfect since it dosent interfere with rotation, and even fo the handheld clips, using an external monitor( which you should) means theres always an alternative cold shoe mount.
