Rodecaster DUO - great device, but BIG problem with my unit...(maybe 48V phantom power?)

My Rodecaster DUO recently started acting up when using my Sennheiser MKE 600 shotgun condenser microphone. It is introducing significant noise to the signal somewhere in the chain. I suspect it is a faulty phantom power unit, but I will have to wait for Rode to troubleshoot the issue. I shipped it out to them and hopefully it won't take too long to resolve the issue.

I got a Rodecaster Duo a few days in advance of my most recent podcast recording, allowing plenty of time to learn how to configure it with various mics. However, when I turned it on it wouldn't boot up. I left it at my studio overnight, thinking maybe it might just take a lot longer to boot up the very first time. But when I came back the next day it was still stuck in the boot sequence. I got hold of Røde customer service, and they guided me through a hard re-boot sequence. But that didn't work, either, and my podcast guest was coming in the next morning. So I just started a return on Amazon and ran to my nearby Guitar Center to buy another unit. That one worked flawlessly, the podcast recording sounds great, and I am thrilled to be able to use it. But the faulty unit I initially received has certainly shaken my confidence, so fingers cross that it will continue to deliver reliable performance. So instead of selling the Audient interface I was going to replace it with, I'm going to keep it in the closet as a backup to the Duo.

Having the same issue with my duo, it’s stuck at 99% on the boot up screen no matter what I try. So you went & got another unit and no issues so far?

@@blakecaudell1617mine was working fine in september when i got it but just a couple days ago started this “stuck at 99” bs. idk what’s wrong with it, and i’ve only seen one video on a guy complaining about it, but i ordered a different power adapter and that might change it. otherwise, idk what i’m going to do about it because i got it on amazon and it’s based the return mark

how do you hard reboot it?
@milesian1
@milesian1 7 ай бұрын
@@willpenaa It sounds ridiculous (and it is), but you have to connect the USB-C power cable, press the power button, and then pull the power cable when the boot-up progress bar is about halfway across the screen. Do that exactly 10 times in a row, and on the 11th time just let it boot up. It worked once for me, but the next time I re-booted it failed to boot up again so I gave up and returned the unit.

The aesthetic on the Rode is super slick, dang. What a pisser. You have quite the setup though otherwise my friend, love it! So, question... IF you bumped up your main mic like you did the other one (+12db) would it make a noise? Is there a sound floor on it as well?
@RandumbTech
@RandumbTech 10 ай бұрын
Thx! Initially, it worked great - with no added noise floor even on the boom mic. As you can see when I switch over to the EM99B, the noise goes away completely. It's roughly 30dB of noise added for some strange reason. There is definitely something going on with the unit. Hopefully, it's something simple and they can fix it quickly. I was planning to sell my SSL2+ but am glad I didn't since it's a great backup!

That stinks. Rode seems to be having some QC issues lately. Historically, they've provided great warranties but it's certainly annoying that they wouldn't cover shipping. I'll be interested to hear what they say

Yeah, the shipping expense hurts but it is what it is. I've been super happy with Rode products in the past - hoping they haven't cut too many corners in the name of increased revenue. Hopefully they can diagnose and fix it quickly.

After three months, I sent my duo in for repair. It was brand new. The Bluetooth pairing with my iPhone had a clicking sound that happened about 5 minutes before I was going to do an interview. The issue was random and unpredictable. Thankfully, it never happened during an interview. Rode said to do a factory reset, but the issue returned. I sent them an audio file of the incident. The workaround was I had to shut down, reboot when this happened, and try not to miss interviewing a guest. Occasionally, the screen froze. They claim their repair turnaround time is two weeks. I never had any issues with the original Rodecaster when you could plug the phone into the unit.

Bummer you got a bad unit as well. I'm thinking they must have had a bad batch near launch. They have since sent me a brand new one and I've had zero issues with it. I'm sure they will resolve your issue in short order as well. Good luck!

What was the problem with your Rodecaster DUO? Were you reimbursed for the shipping charges? After eight months do you still love it?
@RandumbTech

There was a problem with the phantom power supply. They sent me a replacement one and it's working great. I paid for the shipping to them, but they paid for the shipping of the new unit. That's standard practice for anything I've ever sent in for warranty repairs.

Glad you were able to get them to pay for the shipping! I am still not 100% thrilled with mine. Part of the reason is that I can't seem to get clean audio out to my ATEM Mini Extreme. And the recordings sound just "OK". I've been using my Zoom F6 instead and it sounds much better. I just have to do all of my audio processing in post (which isn't that big of a deal).

I was just about to go crazy because of this problem and I came across your video. This problem is not caused by the microphone, is it? Did you find a solution?
@RandumbTech
@RandumbTech 5 ай бұрын
RODE sent me a replacement and it had a similar issue, but the time it took to quiet down was much faster. It is possible that it's a combination of the device and the microphone. It's almost like it takes a minute for the microphone to just "calm down" if that makes sense. Regardless, I've since sold the Rodecaster because it's overkill for what I need. Instead, I'm using a Zoom F6 and it's working great.

My problem started like this. First I bought rode procaster 2. There was never any problem with the sound. Then I bought Rodecaster Duo and something happened to the microphone. Noise started in the background. There is no problem when using it with battery, but the problem starts when you give it 48v. The interesting thing is that I can no longer get clear sound from other audio interfaces I use. (motu m4, rodecaster duo, rodecaster pro 2) I think it caused a grounding problem in the microphone. Now I have to send the microphone back. If I use NVDIA broadcasting and do not filter the sound, I can never get clear sound. @@RandumbTech
