I’ve ordered one for my classroom. We’re gonna podcast and do some live instrumental, vocals, and/or both recordings in my little classroom studio. I’m planning to start a “Musical Monday” club at school and get all the music, dance, and film students all working together on cross collaboration arty stuff. I hope my vision comes true for these students because I’ve been dreaming of this for many years. I now have the space and was patiently waiting for the fundings to purchase the right tools for the job. I look forward to sharing this with you since you’ve been my industry advisor. I really appreciate all your input and feedback since we’ve know each other for the past many years. Keep up the great work!!! :)

Hi Curtis, I've written to Rode about the headphone monitoring. We are using the former model for live broadcasting. Whilst I'm a Rode fan I don't like this mixer for this. That's because whilst listening to the music program output along with monitoring your microphone the balance is not correct. So I have to drop the music output to get a balance between the mic and the music. But when I play back the recording the mic is way higher than the music. There is no way to do a headphone mix other that that when goes out of the mixer. Rode say they are looking at it. Also you can't solo those effects buttons unless the fader is up -- and that goes to air. So the solo feature on the buttons is virtually useless. And I would much rather a gain structure knob with a peak light than all their fancy pre-sets. Cheers.

Update 7 August, 2022: I did formal latency tests for the monitor and headphone outputs and found that on my copy of the RCP2, both the headphone outputs and monitor outputs experience 6ms of latency from the inputs. This remained the same whether the processing was on or off for the microphone inputs. Overall, that is usable for me when doing spoken word recording or streaming, but some individuals with well trained ears will find that unacceptable. Update 12 July, 2022: I did further testing of the latency of the monitor outputs and found that there is, in fact, no substantive latency when I send audio to my Canon C70 via the RCP2's monitor outputs. Here are my updated test results: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m32baHRsnq-rg6c

Curtis, I finally pulled the trigger and picked this unit up. As an intermediate level streamer, podcast producer, and VO performer, I found this gizmo covers SO MANY bases, I'm stupid happy with my investment. Side note - while I record without any processing for VO for now (my DAW is already dialed in for client work), I love the built-in processing for my own podcast and livestream stuff, and appreciate the presets as a starting off point. -- Rob P.S. I’m sure you’ll have fun covering it as it develops further! As you mentioned, and a lot have also reiterated in the comments, the monitor latency is a real shame. Hi Curtis, I love the work that you are doing. There was an incident in San Francisco, where a photographer while working on a wedding was beaten by two-armed gunmen and pistol-whipped. This photographer never let go of his camera gear and unfortunately, he took a beating. Two photography channels offered up a challenge for the Community with Channels to speak up on the safety and awareness of photographers and videographers alike. You are such a videographer and sound guy. The two channels that are talking about this and offering this challenge are Vahagraphy and 247 Media Group. Great video. Quick question, you said there is a delay to the outputs, is the same delay present to the headphones?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 2 жыл бұрын
There is also latency in the headphone outputs, yes. It is not nearly as delayed as something like the ATEM Mini Extreme if you’re familiar with that, but does make it hard to tell how your voice sounds as you apply the processing in real time.
@TheHyphenate
@TheHyphenate 2 жыл бұрын
@@curtisjudd so with that being said, this might not be ideal for musicians and artists doing live music and capturing the final performance. For example, me as a hip hop artist, I run the instrumental hip hop beats through the mixer, the audio then comes out through the speakers, then I rap to the beat I hear out loud. If I record through the Rodecaster this live performance, the delay coming out to the speakers via output or even headphones, means that my microphone audio won't be in sync because of that 100ms delay that it takes for me to hear the beat. Would you say that's a correct assessment and why maybe this won't work for recording music live performances?

@@TheHyphenate It isn't latency free, just low enough that there aren't sync issues if you feed audio from the monitor outputs to a Canon C70 camera. I'd bet there's still 15 - 20 ms of latency. That can be problematic for music production.

Thanks for the review. I’m looking for a quality audio setup to do live webinars, live podcasts, etc. from my home office through my PC. Planning on purchasing the Earthworks Ethos mic soon and trying to figure out my signal chain. I'd like to have compression, de-esser, gating, etc. done in hardware vs software for my needs. Some options I'm thinking through are: - Is this new Rodecaster II sufficient? - DBX 286s unit with an audio interface of sorts (several have said it's lower quality than the Ethos microphone) - ART Channel strip a good option? (either with included or replaced tubes) - 500 series enclosure with individual modules? - Something else? Suggestions greatly appreciated!

Curtis...I thought you'd be interested in my experience thus far with the RCP2. I purchased my first unit about 2 weeks ago and have had to return because the larger 'volume knob' is not operating. It's clearly off it's track and will hardly turn. The second unit I purchased arrived with several issues in assembly. First, the touch screen monitor wasn't properly seeded in its housing. I carefully centered it and pressed on it and it seems to be back in place. A second issue was the metal behind the faders rubbing on the faders when they were adjusted. Again, after pressing down on the entire plate in several places, it seems to have snapped back into position. The build quality on the RCP2 units is inferior to that of the RCP1 in my opinion. I love the new features but this thing feels like it will break if you sneeze at it the wrong way. As I told Rode in my email, I would gladly pay another $100-$200 USD for a "Pro" unit. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. Also, please pass along to Rode if you have their ear.

I just bought a duo and did a similar test with a 150ohms XLR plug, at 76db, volume at 8, with processing but without noise gate (like I saw you did. I'm not sure about your volume). The results are relatively similar but I'm surprised by the difference in dynamic range yours is 1db, and mine is about 3.55db. Do you have any idea why is that? I know there are variations between electronic components, but wondering if that big difference in dynamic range can be just from the variation between my 150ohms plugin and yours or can be something else too. Curtis, if you are recording videos inside a home studio, and you want a mkh8050 XLR audio with a camera, should you A) connect the mic directly to the camera via some XLR mount, or B) connect the mic to the Rodecaster Pro II and sync audio in post? I see the benefits if the audio is directly recorded in the video if the mic is attached to the camera, but maybe the extra live processing effects of the Rodecaster Pro II might be worth the effort of having to manually sync? Or perhaps simply recording raw audio as in the case of A, and just doing extra manual audio editing?

Great review as always Curtis. Question: I know this is overkill for this task, but if you put money aside for a second, do you think that this will be a good choice for recording voiceovers? Specifically, I am talking about adding all of the relevant effects (compressor, gate, de-esser etc. during recording and not in post). The one thing that gets me worried is the headphone delay you mentioned - did you try to monitor during recording?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lensvid. It can certainly be a good option for VO work. The latency in the headphones seems to be a little less than what I found with the monitor outputs, but it isn't the same as zero latency monitoring on analogue devices or other interfaces with that feature. It would be nice if they could add a setting to allow zero latency monitoring, but then you wouldn't hear all of the effects...They'd either need to use a much faster processor (which would be substantially more expensive) or forego playback of the digital effects.

This seems much better to me than to buy a Tuscam audio adapter or a Sony FX-3 that includes auch a top Box. Curtis... I have a RCP II. It is connected to an M1 Mac Max on the primary USBC channel via the cable provided by Rode. The audio connection works perfectly for 5-10 minutes then the primary and secondary channels drop and the audio disconnects. The RCP II Main Stereo and Chat channels are greyed out on the Sound Preferences drop down context menu. I suspect the drivers on the M1 Mac Max that drive these channels have crashed. I cannot re-establish the channel connections between the M1 Mac Max and the RCP II short of performing a POR on the RCP II. RCP II is running the latest beta firmware at 1.0.6 and the latest release of Rode Central 2.0.3 is running on the M1 Mac Max. Just before the channels drop, I hear a crackling noise in my headsets which is the tipoff that the channels have dropped. I have been working with Rode TS to assist in isolating and correct this bug. Have you heard anyone else report this type of failure, and might you have any thoughts on what might be the cause. I also have an iPhoneXII connected to the RCP II via the Secondary Channel and an IPadPro connected to the RCP II via Bluetooth. I really want to like this but that monitoring latency might be a dealbreaker for me. It's really disconcerting for a wired device to have noticeable latency, when there are 30 year old devices that can manage zero or near zero latency monitoring. Maybe they'll give the option for pre/post dsp monitoring at some point to make zero latency more realistic.

This is a long one.. I understand if you don't have time to look at it.. I'm trying to get a device that simultaneously transmits and receives, duplex transceiver that has ports for external mic input and audio output that sits between my audio interface and smartphone that I Bluetooth connect to my smartphone (just like an earbud) but that allows me to tie the smartphone into my audion interface for wireless Bluetooth phone calls. I know how to do it hard wired with an attenuator, and made a video on that. I don't know why there is not a fairly inexpensive device that is seen by the smartphone as something resembling Bluetooth earbuds with mic, but the device instead of being a Bluetooth headset is a device with ports for sound and mic. I know it's easy to build, but I don't want to do it. I'd prefer to buy the device, without spending $700 for a Rode Procaster II. I have all kinds of interfaces and just need the Bluetooth adapter that does that one function in the Ride Podcaster II. Hate spending that much for one little function.

I bought one and it's a total disappointment. First, it's glitchy as hell (new firmwares come but still). Second, It's not compatible with any of game console as a external mic or a sound receiver (PS5, Xbox, whatever). So you forget about letsplaying and other game streaming or recording activities. Third, its Bluetooth is not compatible with modern TVs, like LG OLED42C21LA. Just don't see each other. So you won't be able to receive a sound from the TV to mix with your voice. Fourth, there is no 3.5 input so you need to buy 3.5>6.5 double stereo connector ($15) and occupy 2 mic inputs to be able to record from some hardware. Fifth, the screen quality is real bad - something wrong with the glue they used, the screen is moving forth and back when you touch it. And so on and so on. So it's not an all-in-one as Rhode advertised it. And it's definitely doesn't worth for a podcasting purpose only, like real overkill. For me personally, cause I'm a casual podcaster, mix it with many other activities. So I could better buy one of these cheap sound interface for $100 and it would be compatible with everything and cover all my needs. It's just insane that we get so halfbaked products nowadays for such price. Furthermore, no one KZbinr tell about this cons.

I can't believe you can't connect your phone via cable, I do that all the time with the ZOOM PodTrak P8 and my iPhone 13 Pro Max, so there's obviously no TRRS cable input? I'm kind of in disbelief the bluetooth never works well when you have it connected to other Bluetooth devices at the same time. I answer my phone through the device all day long and it's so handy when I need to record a conversation.

The Bluetooth on the RCP II has been revamped and is outstanding quality. You can still use a phone using the USB port, and Rode sells the cable you need to go USB C to lightning for IPhone and the cable for Android.

@Manuela Guerra that’s such a shame is that is such a game changer for me it’s such a handy feature as people call me quite often and I have iPhone and iPad setup all day long, and I answer my calls via FaceTime. I’m also a scam buster and I love ringing people from the computer and recording it. Actually just thinking out loud I can still do that because I’m recording FaceTime via the computer not the cell phone? It gets confusing but I think I’ve just answered my own question am I correct!

I found I could plug up to 4 K779B USB mcondensor ics into my computer running OBS studio and use the mixers and fader bars and mute buttons in OBS Studio (free) and I didn't need to buy a Rodecaster Pro or Macie DLZ at all. I'm sure there's an app otu ther eot play sound effects at the click of a button so it's only a matter of going looking. I wanted a software solution, not a hardware solution, because all my sources were inside the computer and I wanted to do all my mixing inside the computer, not run it outside to some gadget, and then back in... adding all that latency and $800. Because KZbin and livestreaming doesn't pay a dime. In 15 years I've never made 1 cent off KZbin.

Makes sense if you're not making money from it. But for moneymaking shows, it is helpful to be able to move two or more faders at the same time. Can't do that in OBS on a computer.

You don't like the power button? I positively hate it! Of course I'm hoping to get used to it. But my experience with that type of buttons is that they wear out very fast because people press too hard. The absence of haptic feedback makes it hard to know how hard to press. And as the boot-up process does take time, you're even less sure if you've pressed hard enough.
