I was born in 1955 and grew up dreaming of being the same sort of man as Marshal Dillon. At seventeen I joined the Army and from then on, I had one adventure after another until I reached my fifties. Looking back I believe programmes like Gunsmoke taught me what a real man was; and I genuinely believe that if today's generation were able to see modern-day versions of it; there'd be a lot less psychiatric problems amongst young people.

Chuck Connors was 6 ft 6 inches. James Arness was6 ft 7 inches tall. Grew up a little girl watching GunSmoke. I was fortunate to have been born on James Arness and John Wayne Birthdays May 26th 😊 My 2 heroes my grandchildren watch GunSmoke with me sometimes. I watch it all the time. I loved all the characters. Especially Matt and Kitty. Amanda Blake was absolutely beautiful 🌹 Thank you for sharing theses videos and God Bless 🙏🏽

I didn't know Arness & John Wayne had the exact same birthday. I wonder if that coincidence is what initially drew them together ?

James Arness' height was detrimental to him during WW2. As a Marine he was always made to get off the Higgins boat first to see how deep the water was LOL. He also made sure all of his fellow actors on 'Gunsmoke' were taken care of by setting up a pension for all of them. A great all around man.

It cracks me up when a criminal is lying to Matt Dillon and instead of tipping his hand and calling him a liar before he can prove it, Matts' only response is to just stand there and say Ummm humm. Most people use that response to agree with the person they are talking with, but Matt Dillon NEVER uses it that way. He never says umm, humm, to agree with what he has just been told. Viewers always know that and most of the liars probably knew it too. This is probably one of my favorite lines that is frequently repeated in Gunsmoke and I sometimes wonder if this is something James Arness just started doing or was that written into the scripts (?) It drives my wife crazy when I do this to her which always give me a little chuckle. WRZ 2021-07-10

Chuck Connors' scene was from a 1956 episode, and The Rifleman didn't begin until 1958. Weird that they decided to make him look taller than James Arness: IMDb gives Connors' height as 6' 5 1/2" and Arness' as 6" 7"

Many years ago reading about Chuck Connors, I read he thought it was funny that he had to wear some elevator shoes and stand on platforms because in the scene at 3:40 they wanted Chuck to look taller than Matt Dillon and more intimidating.

@@JoseJimenez-is1cgWay back in the "real" very old days of grave markers, such as wooden crosses, they were more than likely made of wood too not stone as they are in the present day so it made sense here too that they're blowing back and forth a bit in the wind.
