Great lineup. Petula Clark's voice has that effortless quality. The Supremes' were so versatile and sound terrific. Mamas and Papas are joyous.

This is an amazing show! How wonderful that it wasn't interupted with introductions, commentary, or biographical notes. Just pure music. The medley with Pet Clark and Bobby Darin includes two songs I have never heard and I thought I knew *every* R & Hart song!

This was part of the last great anthology TV series, ABC Stage 67. It aired March 2, 1967, one week before my 18th birthday. I saw almost every episode of the series. They ranged from science fiction to musical comedy to one-person hour long monologues to drama. Wonderful, wonderful stuff. Cancelled after one season. Several of the shows are here on KZbin, but I really long to see one called "The People Trap" which may be lost, not preserved. The songs sung by the Supremes and the Mamas and the Papas on this show appeared as parts of their albums about the same time. Don't know about the other performances.

The tracks sound better as Ross solos. The vocal parts by the back up Supremes are pure Lawrence Welk. Corny. Listen to Cass and Michelle harmonize with the Papas for example. Unfortunately they couldn't harmonize like the other Motown back up singers

@@taddyd1 The actual album released by the Supremes was NOT a Ross solo ... no idea of what you mean. It was a true Supremes recording with all three girls. It truly was. Twenty-seven episodes of the series ABC Stage 67 were filmed but only twenty-six were broadcast. The excluded one, featuring Bob Dylan, was deemed to be too controversial and too "new wave" for American audiences. Several of the shows are here on KZbin, but the majority seem not to have been preserved and are presumed lost forever. I was 18 years old then, and loved the whole series.

The Mamas and the Papas look like three of the most awkward people on earth - Cass has the most grace of any of them, but luckily they had their wonderful voices (and I never tire of watching Margot Robbie . . . I mean Michelle). I love that though - nowadays we expect singer/instrumentalist/jugglers and we don’t tolerate imperfections much.

SOOOOO good to see Flo proudly in the lineup. No offense to Cindy (I liked her well enough) but THIS is the group we all fell in love with. It's a shame, Berry didn't - or couldn't - recognize this. He always thought it was all due to Diana, be he was wrong. It was the GROUP - Mary, Diane and FLO - who TOGETHER made them so extraordinary.
@andrewthornhill704210 ай бұрын
@njplr Oh, I think that (deep down) Berry knew that the three original Supremes were a magic act that complemented each other vocally. Otherwise he wouldn't have signed them. It was his later belief that Ross was so much more than Flo and Mary that led to the disassociating 'back up' from lead. Upon Mary's death he did acknowledge her talent and input to Motown.

The Mamas and Papas really brought a new dimension to the standards without sacrificing any of the angst or wit of Larenz Harts' lyrics. Incredible recordings. @@kurtsupreme I love the Supremes and have every one of their albums, 1963 through 1977. But in terms of raw vocal talent, the Mama's &Papa's were unequaled. The Supremes, especially Diana, had to be very carefully coached and rehearsed in order to sound legit. Not so with Cass and her gang. And the Mama's &, Papa's chose to be a flash in the pan, breaking up in 1969 was their own decision.
@kurtsupreme2 жыл бұрын
@@malcolmmarshall5946 If you do have every SUPREMES album, as you claim, you should be ashamed of yourself mentioning The Mamas and Papas in the same breath as THE SUPREMES! Raw talent? The talent in the Mamas and Papas was Cass (vocally) and John (musically). Michele was eye candy and Denny was a mediocre singer. With 12 number one records and the full muscle of Holland, Dozier, and Holland, THE SUPREMES were the most successful American vocal group in musical history. The Mamas and Papas couldn't touch the hems of the SUPREMES' gowns. Plus, audibly, The Mamas and Papas were a studio sound for the most part and visually, they always looked like they needed a BATH! I will say one thing on their behalf: "Sing For Your Supper" "Dream A Little Dream," and "I Call Your Name" were PERFECT songs to showcase the group and Cass's wonderful voice. Beyond that? You've lost me when you compare them with THE SUPREMES!

Not quite...for some reason...Mary and Florence's voices were prerecorded, but Diana is the only only actually singing live. But it was common practice for all Motown groups, that very often for TV shows? Only the lead was sung live while the background vocals were pre-recorded.
