Hi Rodian. I can see you know your stuff where hod carrying and knocking up is concerned. I've been hoddying for 20 years and no doubt, it's a semi skilled job. Of course being a bricklayer takes a lot longer to master and I've worked with some great bricklayers in that time. But hoddying has it's merits also. Keep up the good work sir and these tutorials are well appreciated..

A hose pipe with a gun is the best way to rinse. If you forget to clean from the previous day, then load it with type 1 or ballast and water and leave it turning for a bit. Tip the drum to angle where the contents clean the front of the drum and gradually tip the contents out. Rince out with clen water.

I'm no builder I'm just building a new shed. 9x6 meters. My mixer lives in the garden has done for 3 years with a selco bag over it. Cleaned out with a few bits of rubble and a hose off inside. It's still like new. I've built 1 work shop already and 2 garden walls... say 20ton mixed for that and I'm at 35ton for my current build... foundations are a foot deep due to the weight of my machines. And my footing are about 18 inch. Mixer should last for years to come

As a diy bodger I can't emphasise enough what a difference making gear of the right consistency is. Tapping bricks level on a dryish bed is virtually impossible and bricks sliding along like Torville and Dean when too wet makes you question your manhood. You know the missus had a sneaky peak while you went the bog and was thinking "time for a proper man in this house". THE GEAR MUST BE RIGHT!!!

good video assuming you are not on a job with a labourer on continuous mixing work, what do you do with the mixer between batches? Coincidentally I fill with water to the exact same point you showed, I then leave that running between batches so I inevitably then start the next batch with "cementitious" water - does not seem to make a huge different to the colour consistency though. I do not clean between batches as creates far to much mess to be cleared up / disposed of

Haha you are funny. Great tutorial! Do you have one on mixing lime mortar? It is very different and can have no portland cement. It needs to be loads drier than cement. 1 lime to 3 sand only. Do you mix all the dry stuff first without water so the fine lime is evenly mixed with the course sand before the water comes in? It has to be hard to work, a bit dry and crumbly, not even as soft as dough because otherwise it shrinks too much and cracks

Rodian, can you give more detail on the ratio? As I understand it: 10 shovels of sand to 1/2 bag cement is 5:1 as there are two shovels in 1/2 bag of cement . So if I used a bucket it would be five buckets of sand to one bucket of cement. Is that correct or would it be 10 buckets to one bucket? Hang on Ill have to take my shoes off as I have run out of fingers!If the sand is really wet it will bulk so an experienced eye would check the colour.Would putting the cement in the plasticiser/water first mix the compo (pug, muck best butter) evenly and quicker with less messing about?
@RodianBuilds
@RodianBuilds 5 жыл бұрын
The ratio of 5:1 works with any amount 5 buckets of sand to 1 bucket of cement or 5 spoonfuls of sand to 1 spoonful of cement all the same just depends how much muck you want. I always put the plastersizer in the water first then pour it into the mixer then do 5 sand half a bag of cement, let it mix, add water then 5 more sand. Comes out lovely every time

Gauged with buckets is a very good way of doing it. I had one labourer who managed to fuck it up though 🤣 Somehow only put half the dust in and came over with a Barrow full of completely different colour muck. Thanks for the comment buddy 👍🏻😁

buckets is more accurate. Best thing to do is keep the same guy mixing on a job.

Shovel is 2X faster than a bucket system, if you use half a bag of cement each time you can't miss if you can count the same amount of shovel loads each batch....and the cement bags are only half as big as when I first startd....but i will conceed that using a cup or larry pot...or a bucket for measurement when using lime or oxide, is worth the xtra time and effort.
