I'm useing type S bagged mortar mix, the first batch was aweful and did not mix very well at all and wouldn't stick to the blocks. After this video I realize my mix consistancy was wrong and it was much too dry. Thank you for the video, I now have more confidence to finish the project!

How i learnt starting off when i first started working as a labourer in america for my uncle. At first took a few times to get it right but once i got the hang of it becomes easier. Now in my first year as a apprentice bricklayer and am glad i learnt it the hard way makes me appreciate the trade more.

I think mixing in a wheel barrow is the best way especially to learn we’re it’s higher up it doesn’t hurt your back as much and also mixing by hand allows you to be able to feel the mortar and the consistency where as in a mixing machine I think it’s so easy to add to much water and end up with plastering mix were it takes a while to all mix in properly. Spot boards are too messy and low down so they hurt the lower back I tend to find and mixing by bucket isn’t an opinion unless your literally doing a very small repair job. My only thing I do differently is I thoroughly mix the contents of wheel borrow whiles it dry till it’s the same colour and there no secret sand or cement anywhere in the borrow probably makes no difference though but we all got our own methods least then you know all the sand as had even amount of cement then I add water slowly again thoroughly mixing through till it all sticky and sticky’s to my spade and abs trowel. I’m a roofer not a brick layer but I enjoy watching other trades work and learning there methods and little tricks of trades. I normally use a 3/1 ratio or 4/1 I think 5/1 is a little weak for roof work and the amount of weather it experiences if I’m pointing in brick work on chimney or lead work it’s always 4/1 as I know if it too strong in years to come it will damage the face of the bricks especially old clay bricks Keep the videos coming I will have a very keen eye on any roof work though 😉

I rarely knock muck up in anything but a mixer. Like you say, only for smaller jobs would I do it in a barrow. Deffo easier on the back. Glad you're enjoying the vids, I also like watching other trades. Sometimes can find tips to bring over to my brickwork

Good lad. Thanks for the tips. Dumb question: are you not concerned about the cement dust getting airborne while you dry mix it? Would it be safer to dampen it down a little first? Thanks mate.

Though this is the orthodox method for barrow. The easiest and fastest way I've found is to use a hoe. Add wTer to barrow. Add cement to water. Take it with how. Then add sand to the slop. Nice and easy and faster than mixer ( no cleaning of mixer required. ). Gauge with buckets for less hassle and less chance of labourer getting the gauges wrong. I love bricklaying. The sweet science

The Notorious wheel barrel method. I labor for a Crew of 4 brick layers so this option gives me nightmares! Question btw, FebMix, what exactly is that for? Might be something I can suggest to my boss if it's something to improve the mud longevity or something. Thnx Bud.
@RodianBuilds
@RodianBuilds 5 жыл бұрын
Febmix essentially adds bubbles to the mortar to improve workability of the muck. I cant use muck without it, makes such a difference! It's similar to adding lime

@grahamnumber7123

about right for me since i'm no pro and slow. Soil will evaporate by the time I have my shit in one sock. The area to be worked with normally soaks up water quickly anyway and i'm told this helps the bond. Slightly wetter Is surely better than slight too dry. No expert mate but his mix was good for me. (course chop and fold every so often)

@@LegionUK I am looking at what mix to repair cracks in crazy paving, cracks where it's clear the slab has to come up and be relaid (that hollow sound when tapped) BUT since I am not the owner...."reapir" seems the only option...any ideas appreciated! BTW my comments was not suggesting anything wrong with either post, just as you say different strokes for different folks.
