Simply beautiful....it's a shame that so many churches do not know the deep richness of "hymns". And the worst part is that most churches DO NOT want to know, learn to sing nor do they appreciate hymns.

@carolineloder20833 жыл бұрын
@@ianmclaughlan I totally understand. My husband and I are not regular church goers (shame on us), but I really wanted to go to Christmas Eve services last year so we tried a local church. The pastor's message was recognizable from my memories of church when I was young, but the music was not. Neither one of us recognized most songs that were played...with harmonica, digital instruments and drums. Drums in church on such a special and Holy day was very disheartening for both of us. My husband said to me that is one of the reasons he stopped going to church and ruined his view of organized religion. It seems that the desire to change and modernize church has removed most of what was Godly and made you feel you were in a special and sacred place. It is all about fitting into the new world views and cultures now instead of the message and word of God. It is so sad.

@@carolineloder2083 I love the old hymns too, but let's don't forget some of them started out as beer hall dittys. So perhaps it's not the case that a certain style of music is more "worldly" than another.

Blower-supplied pipe organs are "constant volume" instruments, requiring the use of swell shutters to control the volume. Pump organs like this don't have that limitation, and I love how the organist varies pressure on the foot pedals to achieve dynamic phrasing similar to what a concert band or even a congregation singing this song in worship would. He also shows the various mixtures and voices the organ has. Very nice - well done.

Thanks! There are too many organists and keyboard players in general that do not understand the abilities of a well maintained reed organ or harmonium. These instruments can sing and breathe life into many types of music - as long as the treadles are used properly. I always say that to play a pump organ, you need to disconnect your feet from your brain and connect then to your emotions :) Thanks again for commenting!

Pipe organs do have louder and softer pipes which the organist can choose between. Plus the shades indeed. Using a crescendo pedal you can achieve a similar volume control effect on the pipe organ. Just not as smooth.

The grandest hymn tune I know is an other ancient Irish melody, with the name Slane. The best arrangement I know of it is at 343 in Hymns Ancient & Modern New Standard, also at 10 in 100 Hymns For Today, from which some content was later incorporated into A&MNS. That version includes upbeat notes for all lines other than the first. The whole thing flows much better that way than in the more common versions that have gaps between lines and seem empty and disjointed by comparison. A suggestion for modification - in the 3rd bar, play Ab in the tenor for the whole bar and for the bass play the small optional notes, adding a passing note G in the 2nd half of the 2nd beat. Much grander than the original harmony there. You can make a similar modification in the penultimate bar, playing Ab in the bass for the whole bar and slightly altering other parts to work with it.

Rodney... I recently found your videos on KZbin and just have to say... wow! I have played the organ all my life, but usually played on pipe organs or electronic. I guess I have always been a bit snobbish toward reed organs... Since all the ones I've ever heard have usually had a rather thin, tinny sound to them. Perhaps due to the type of organ, maybe the person playing it, or perhaps it just wasn't restored and fully functional. I forwarded this video to a friend of mine in Stevens Point, WI because I was so impressed with it. My favorite hymn on a great sounding reed organ!! He told me he was friends with you on social media, and has had the pleasure of talking with you as well. I have to say... You have given me a new outlook on these relics from the past. I would definitely consider having one of these in my front parlor!!

Hi Scott, thanks for such a nice comment! Believe it or not I was once a reed organ snob, until I realized the potential that they have. Very few people have heard a tuned and restored reed organ for over 100 years. The other issue is that many people do not realize the expressiveness that they are capable of. There are cheap tinny sounding reed organs - but unfortunately the good ones have been assumed to be the same and are slowly being tossed in the dump.

Do you know the magnificent ancient Irish melody St Columba, sometimes used for "The King of Love"? It's at 490 in the 1933 edition of the English Hymnal. Perhaps also in other editions too. Editor Ralph Vaughan Williams notes that the melody as printed there is in "original form". I seem to remember that the triplets are omitted in other hymn books, perhaps because the editors assumed that people would not sing them properly or would simply dislike them. The harmony there is the best I know for that melody, including a bit of Celtic twilight. I have wondered for years whether Vaughan Williams composed it. It could be superb played by you on your fine reed organs.

This song 🎵, ABIDE WITH ME, its words or lyrics were written as a PRAYER by a Scottish Anglican Hymnwriter and Poet , HENRY FRANCIS LYTE (1 June 1793-20 Nov 1847) as he was dying from turberulosis in 1847 and is based on Luke 9:29. The melody or Tune was composed by popular Hymn Tune Composer, Organist WILLIAM HENRY MONK (16 March 1823 -1 March) In 1861. So amazing is the divine inspiration of these songs and lyrics that were composed and written in the period 1700 - 1800 by sincere Anglicans and then also Methodists. John Wesley ( England, 1703 - Mch 1791) and his brother Charles, were Anglicans who then founded the Methodist Church a period of great revival with many songs 🎵 composed which talked about THE BLOOD of Christ in line with the Gospel of SANCTIFICATION that John preached after Martin Luther, (Germany 1483 - Feb 1546) preached JUSTIFICATION for his Age coming out of the thick anti Bible darkness of Bible banned and Christian blood drunk Catholicism. ( Christianity is in 3 phases, JUSTIFICATION, SANCTIFICATION, PERFECTION and each of these God's sent generals had a portion in these 3 phases to preach, in the restoration process of the destruction that was made in the dark ages - AD500 - 1500 by Catholicism which killed 68 million Christians and banned The Bible. in that period till Martin Luther , a monk who read well The Bible while locked in study, in the Vatican away from Germany and saw truth and started preaching JUSTIFICATION after running out of the catholic and writing the Bible in German language and then translated and written in English in the John Wesley revival period of 1800 - 1900. Before then 325 AD - 1500 The Bible was banned by the Catholic and reading it meant being burnt🔥, fed to the lions or sawn in half. The 3rd phase, PERFECTION, started in 1909 signified by the complete restoration of the Baptism of The Holy Ghost in Azuza Street with the black in America) So these songs came with the Saint's blood stained inspiration in different times of wicked persecution which was met with an UNWAIVERED resistance to stand with The Word even if it meant death. Such was the commitment that such songs🎵 were inspired to strengthen the brethren against the Cain attack.. We must appreciate and cherish these songs and sing them in the originality of their composition and The Spirit that gripped the compors otherwise we will have perverted the work of The Spirit of God. This is why, today, we have so many Lukewarm Christians coz of Lukewarm Hollyood disco and Rock and roll and jazz jiving churches, ITS BECAUSE WE HAVE LOST THE FIRST LOVE AND HAVE BECOME SATANS SYNAGOGUES
