Possibly the most dramatic time of year for our Roe deers is during the rut. We have a resident male and female in the forest, the female (Doe) currently has 2 young with her and over the last few weeks the male (Buck) has been courting her with a hope to fathering next years young.
The Buck has been chasing the Doe through the forest, making a rasping sound as he does. The Doe will have also been calling to the Buck and producing an advertising scent, this scent can be detected for quite some distance. It appears that this scent has drawn in some new Bucks to the territory.
The resident Buck appears to have sustained an injury to his back leg, possibly from fighting to keep his territory or during a chase of the female, hopefully he will be ok but it might ruin his chances of mating with the Doe if he hasn't already.
A new Buck in the forest also looks to have had an injury to one of his antlers, this could have occurred when the antlers were growing earlier in the year or this too could be as a result of the rut.
Who will father next years young?
Will the Buck with the sore leg recover?
Is there a new top Buck in the forest?
Who is the newcomer with the broken antler?
This is better than Eastenders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale all put together
