Actually, the verse 'che mi sento di morir' can be interpreted in two ways: the first one is as 'because I feel death approaching', as it was translated here; but the second one is 'because I feel ready to die (for the partisans' cause)'. The wording of the verse and the use of the preposition 'di' point more toward the second meaning actually, but Italian allows for a lot of linguistic freedom in verses/poetry, so both options are on the table.
@AngelofKaos11 ай бұрын
The correct translation would be "Because I feel like (dying / I am about to die)" rather than "feeling death approaching". But you are correct on the double interpretation. It hints at both the dramatism of grief ("I feel like I'm about to die (of indignation) from having my homeland taken away from me"), and as a commitment to the anti-fascist cause ("Today I feel like I could die for my homeland/ideals") Italians use these dramatic expressions very often, like "I felt death creeping up behind my back" when you feel shivers (as my nonno used to say), or "you're going to kill me from embarassment/disgust/etc", but since "di" is used, that is correct, it also indicates willingness towards sacrifice.

This Rare version of this song, is to me the most beautiful. Especially as you read the words. My beloved Grandparents lost their part of Italy to the Germans. My Nonna died, my Nonno was taken by the Germans and his five children fled in the night. My mothers last memories of her childhood hometown was the Mountains covered in Snow and the feilds of red Poppies in the spring... My Nonno died in a Concentration camp in Austria, and I wonder, he being a humble farmer, if he and the others from his town sung this this song as they were taken to their deaths. I can remember my Mother and Aunty singing this when i was small... Being older and understanding my family history much better... This song hits home in a way, that makes you cry...

@@autofox1744 you talked about authoritarianism in another comment on this video, and my suspicions about you being an American were confirmed by your ignorance to Fascism and italian history itself. This song wasnt even made to be antifascist, infact it was made in the 60s never even sung by partisans. So much for your antifascist fantasy about italian history because we can even see that fascism had support after the war and up to today. But we arent allowed in politics, because you need authoritarianism to combat authoritarianism and then you need to describe authoritarianism so now they ban the left or they ban the right because they are by the opposing side as "authoritarian". Keep dreaming about this "free" world, because it will not happen until you establish a revolutionary state so powerful that it can single handedly crush all the enemies that slow down the wheels of history, to stomp those greedy anti nationalist figures until their heads explode. This song is famous in 1980's China because of a Yugoslavian film《The bridge》, my father can sing this song in Italian At the end of the film, the bridge engineer blows up the bridge that he designed, to stop fascists. “Bella ciao” coincidently sounds like "farewell, bridge(别了,桥.)" in Chinese. An unexpected bond connecting China, Italy, and Serbia. Long live internationalism. Although I was born in 2000, I miss the days when people ignore national borders, fought for the same ideal. Today China is full of extreme nationalism and patriotism, hope Europe will not repeat the same mistakes.

This song needs to come to the US, in these sorry times. Fascism has returned in a new suit. It really never left. Has been festering in the hearts of the powerful for two generations, and now, with a century of imperial dictatorship of the rich and the heads of state, it has found its hold once more. Siblings. Vote, yes. But fight in other ways. Defend your siblings from the devices of fascism

Fascism is better than communism. Stalin, Lenin and Ceausescu were worse than Hitler. (Hitler killed 6 000 000 jews and they killed over 30 000 000 innocent people in the Gulag). In conclusion, both fascism and communism are EQUALLY bad.
