Note: For those who’ve seen the individual videos already, here’s what’s new: Brand new introduction for the series, re-edited in quite a few places to improve quality (especially the first few videos when ya boi didn’t know how to keep a consistent aspect ratio) and to make it work as one continuous video, use of higher quality clips as well as additional joke edits, and the all-new ending credits sequence. See if you can spot all the changes! This should go without saying but a few things in here are now dated (GT Sophy, engine swaps, etc) but I still think it’s important to remember that at a certain point in time this was the exact situation for players in GT7 and overall my points are still relevant. I don’t know why I’m even mentioning this because I’ll still get comments about it anyway. Bruh.

I think the way they ruined car collecting has gotta be my biggest complaint. It's like they concentrated way too much on car values and trying to replicate the real world car market, and completely forgot about why people enjoy collecting cars in games in the first place. We don't do it because we enjoy trying to collect a ton of virtual currency and spend it, we do it because we want to check out and drive a wide variety of cars. When lots of cars are basically locked behind unobtainable goals, it really ruins our ability to enjoy what the game could have to offer.

Problem is that motorsport saw the success of horizon and tried to follow it. The hyper casual market isn't as interested in track racers. About the AI, If I remember correctly Kaz actually wanted to ditch single player for a long time. I believe Sony forces them to have something otherwise noone would buy it, and at best PD half-asses it, and at worst they actively sabotage it. The artificial pace slowing clock is a hint I believe. Like, you programmed it to be better than this, why would you deliberately rubberband it to go slower and extend the grid to make it at best underwhelming and at worst encouraging you to turn your Gr. 3 to a lawnmower.
@RobertoFornaro Жыл бұрын
PS: This would also explain the whole mess the career structure is now, it's not like PD couldn't design a better one, they either don't care or they are sabotaging it directly, and by stating in the marketing "GT IS BACK" probably they want to alienate newer customers to the concept and sweep a career mode under the rug. I know, it sounds like a conspiracy theory, but I can't shake off this thought.

Same, it has the best career mode for SP, events are just like it's predecessors and therefore fun and encouraging you to experiment with lots of cars, enough variety to keep you hooked in and top notch gameplay. It has a few downsides like not letting you use concept cars in most events was an L decision (though I wouldn't make the trade GT5 did where you could use those cars like any other, but had that awful leveling system). And now there are mods for it, and near perfect emulation options, so GT4 will likely have many more years of life injected thanks to the series' dedicated community.

This series has been incredible. Your critique on Gran Turismo 7 highlights my gripes on modern racing games as a whole; they always have one downside that ruins the game for me. It is honestly so depressing to see AAA developers in the racing genre to not even try to make a good racing game anymore. It's just "pHySiCs AnD gRaPhIcS" and that's it. This is insulting. Ever since I played Gran Turismo 4 when I was 8-years-old, it capture me into the world of cars and video games. Learning different car brands and their nationality, how cars work and how to drive them. It all return back to Gran Turismo 4. If it wasn't for GT4, I wouldn't be playing video games right now, but seeing the industry and their communities nowadays, I'm not even sure I would want to continue playing games. ==OFFTOPIC== I've always dreamt of making my own racing game; one that combines many features from many fan favourites into one package. I've been debating that if I can do this, but after seeing the state of the racing genre, I figure I might as well as do it now. Yours, Raycevick's, Kacey's and Ultra Violet's critiques on modern racing games motivates me to try out this project. I know it will be a daunting task, but I will try to make this dream a reality. @nynameisnyan20 Thank you so much for the reply. As for the game, my main issue is the physics model. I have been debating whenever to make one from scratch or use one that is premade. How to fix Gran Turismo 7 (and how it should have been launched). Take what there already is, add a few more high credit races, give you more freedom with the opening car choice, and change the single player. The game should have had standard championships like those in the previous GT games, and add the menu books as an additional side objective that you can do if you want an easier time, or are just learning how GT works. The dealerships should change the old way, after each event, and the cars should have a standard price. They should not ever reach up to 20,000,000, it's ridiculous, and any cars that are incredibly expensive should have their own races.

I keep getting the same brand invites on cars I've already obtained like Bugatti and Pagani. I wanted a Porsche and Ferrari but never got one. Especially we noticed after recent new car updates monthly the devs knew they never wanted to add another Invitation-only car because it was not well received by fans. 3:12:30 "I think a game which functions as a virtual car museum, is probably what they're aiming for. So why not lean into that more?" That got me thinking. Instead of it being some random cafe the player is taking pretty pictures of cars for. (At the expense of their own wallet, no less.) What if the game framed the player as the co-owner of an automotive museum? (Alongside a character who helps to guide new players.) And you race for the sake of promoting the museum. And instead of the linear menu books that straight up give you the cars needed by just playing specific events tied to them. All to just take a picture of them... The museum would of course want cars to put up on display. And so like the menu books, you'd have a set of cars to get ahold of. Except you would have multiple of these sets available at any given time, and how you acquire the needed cars is up to you. Wether that is buying them from a dealer, winning them as a price car, or even going to an auction for rare cars. Some of these sets could also just have requirements that the cars have to fulfill, instead of specific cars. Such as "4 modern hot hatches" or "2 hyper cars". And as you complete these sets, the museum "levels up", and gives you access to new sets to complete for the museum. As well as extra rewards, such as money, a price car, etc. And completing a lot of sets that involve specific manufacturers, could also be how you unlock their invites. If one were to have that mechanic in the game still. One could even have a set with no restrictions, were a player can show off some of their cars to other players when they look at one's profile/museum. Then near the end of the campaign, there could even be a large championship that would be held by the museum. Like a final challenge! I think this would be a lot more fun and engaging for the players. Since they would have a ton more choice about how to go through the game's campaign. And without changing that whole "virtual car museum" idea that GT's director seemed so focused on for GT7. Because the game would straight up be about a car museum, and how that affects the reason for the player to go through the game's various races. This of course doesn't touch the ai, the fact a lot of cars are pointless within the game, the lack of event variety. But when it comes to the campaign's basis, this honestly sounds much more interesting and fun, than just grinding through menu books and watching cutscenes were character's I don't care about ramble on and on about history... Also I have never played any GT before. I used to be much more of a Forza player, but then FH4 happened... But I still hope these ideas of mine still sound interesting to the GT community.

I love the gran turismo series. You were right about some of the points in the video about wanting to be wrong about the future of GT - wanting to be proven wrong etc. The recent change in allowing Engine swaps and the ultimate tuning shop is a small grain of change that reduces the toxicity of the spins and makes the game better. It’s a heavy dose of copium but I do think PD just might have realised the colossal direction change required, at the very least they know they can’t do this again. Great Video so far! Love the long form content!

I still don't think they realize it. I think the hubris is strong, and they don't hold the players in any sort of high regard. I honestly don't feel like any new racing games can offer me anything I don't already have with my 30+yr library. After FM4 and GT5 it's just kind of been like... what else do we really need? And what can any new racing game really offer us that's not already been done and done very well? That's the problem. At a certain point, we've simulated everything about as well as we can, and only a huge paradigm shift in simulation or immersion will ever give be able to give us that utterly reliable experience of fun that we looked forward to experiencing every day. Remember that? Coming home from work or school and firing up the 360 or PS3 and just knowing you were about to do nothing but enjoy a damn good time? It's sad, but it's true. It's never gonna be the same again, boys. We're never getting those days back.

I've watched this video multiple times and I come back to it once again. I've beaten every race in the entire game, and after running hundreds of hours of AFK races with the Honda Beat on Daytona to grind for credits, I have reached 94% completion on the car roster. All I'm missing is a few used and legendary cars and two invite-only cars: the Veyron and the Huayra. Up until this week, I had obtained 2 Lamborghini invites, 2 Aston Martin invites, 2 Ferrari invites and 1 Citroen invite. I had also pulled 4 Venenos and 3 Chirons straight from the roulette. But despite having EACH of them appear 5 times in the roulette, I had not pulled a single Bugatti or Pagani invite. On Saturday, I pulled a Porsche invite. Despite not ever pulling another Porsche invite before, the Carrera was the car I got for beating menu book #39, so it was worthless to me. On Monday, I pulled my third Aston Martin invite. And a couple of minutes ago, I pulled my third Lamborgini invite. So, to sum up: *THREE* Lamborgini invites, *THREE* Aston Martin invites, *TWO* Ferrari invites. *FOUR* Veneno pulls from the roulette, *THREE* Chiron pulls from the roulette. *ZERO* Bugatti invites, *ZERO* Pagani invites. *ZERO* Veyron pulls from the roulette, *ZERO* Huyara pulls from the roulette. ................................................................................................................................................... I have been playing Gran Turismo for 20 years. Polyphony will never see another penny from me. I am done. Edit: Believe it or not, I got ANOTHER PORSCHE INVITE, 48 hours after making this comment. If it didn't have any resale value, I'd break the CD in half, but I'll trade it in for something that isn't complete ass. What a colossal waste of time.

The current state of their online lobbies is so woefully disappointing; I went from racing online in leagues, sport mode, and random lobbies with friends using a 300mbps plan via a wifi extender throughout GT Sport’s lifespan to experiencing the most jittery, unstable garbage while being wired directly to a third-party router connected to a modem that currently supports a 1GB plan. I’ve been playing this series online since GT5 and have never had a such longstanding instability issues like I do now; such a bummer. For some perspective, I’ve always lived in Los Angeles county so it’s not like I’m out in the middle of nowhere trying to finagle some 50 mbps connection from the local watering hole. This is a fascinating and very well considered/executed critique of GT7 by a fellow Brit. It's a game I bounced off because the career mode café talking heads part you get dropped into is so baffling and to be honest, kinda boring. Bad game design and it pulls down the amazing visuals, sound design and gameplay. If I like a car and want to read up on it, I can do that when I'm not gaming. Having to click through lots of Wikipedia summation waffle rather than drive the thing, that happens far too often. It's a video game, not an automotive history documentary. GT6 is still my favourite, honorable mention for GT4 as well obviously. GT Sport I hated a few years after release, but now at end of life where all the single player stuff finally works offline like it should have from day one, it's actually pretty decent and almost up there with GT6. That's one of the problems though isn't it - it takes years of patching to get the last GT games anywhere near the old ones which were already well sussed career wise, off of the disc. It's part of the rot of always on Internet based modern game design thinking - release an unfinished product and patch it later. That being the case I'd rather wait until it's finished i.e. no more patches, even if it takes years.

They coulda done a few things that woulda been cool with some of the GT7 changes: - Add a special bonus questionaire to gain a credit bonus that race where the info is found in Cafe or something... but knowledge without application doesn't do much. - There is a TON of GT staple races that don't exist even after a year on the market in GT7. - Sport Mode I think should have to be unlocked, but it could have been unlocked differently with more thought. (Sportsmanship Test Races, open up Race A/B/C seperately with license. etc/etc) - The AI in solo mode is horrifying, as is the fact there is no Qual, no standing starts... - There is a TON of inconsistancies in the livery editor and custom parts, from defaulting your interior color based on paint change(new NSX in red), to 2 piece wheels that get fully painted as 1 unit, when in every other GT that wheel was clearly a polished lip even after altering color...buying the paints is a pain, because there is no filters, and finally wtf with carbon fiber.... serious. That's heinous that once you try to add carbon... no more special colors. You cannot make decal metallic. And there is no individual texture per decal... instead it decides that ALL your decals are that texture once changed. The windsheild banners are often not using the entire space and cut you off.

GT4, for me, just has this sense of progression and collection that I've never felt in other games. Sure I might be grinding for money, but I'm also making progress while I grind. I'm building a connection to the cars I'm using. I'm seeing that percentage complete number slowly going up with every race and I feel like while I'm in for a long ride, it's going to be a lot of fun. I feel accomplished with every single race and upgrade. It's almost like an RPG. Maybe that's why I enjoy the Import Tuner Challenge game (and it's predecessors) as much as I do. The single player is a story. Not in the traditional sense, but in that you're making your own story. You and your car are embarking on this epic journey together. Racing games now days have lost their soul.

I think it's not only racing games, past 10 years everything in gaming is dumbed down, made fool proof with retardated HUD's and objective markers removing any sense of independent exploration and accomplishment, all aiming to appeal to the most common denominator thereby appealing to noone. And to draw that even broader, it's not only racing games or games in general, it's just also society as a whole, dumbed down, looking for a challenge is a vice nowadays.

In my opinion Forza Motorsport 4 had the perfect balance of fun and prestige. The cars were celebrated beautifully but still came across as epic, rather than pretentious. Same goes for the music. If there is anything I’d give the Devs their flowers on it’s the Livery Editor which is the best by a mile in the industry. But there is some maddeningly silly things about it that make no sense to me. First off, you’re right. The sound track is repetitive. If you make liveries for hour like I do, you get to listen to the same songs over and over and over again. But at half volume. Which is good I guess? It’s as if they knew that it would be irritating so they just turned it down. But why not utilize all your songs and turn it up? Then there is the issue of layers on the editor. Brilliant move on their part regarding the use of SVG format vectors to be able to manipulate real world graphics rather than cobbling together a bunch of shapes like you have to in Forza. But then, there is no way to group together those images and save them as one layer. You have to go through individually and duplicate them to the other side? Why? Why can I not just group a side and then put it on the other side in one motion symmetrically? It’s incredibly simple to do. Other games get that right but they can’t? Also, why is there not a mask function? Why must I toil with perfectly outlining something so something in the bottom shows through? It’s like they didn’t consult a single person that actually uses this stuff. Which, actually would be on brand. Edit: Also I want to add something. I owned a 2013 Subaru WRX. My favorite car I have ever had. It used to be in the game but they got rid of it (that body style) Which sucks. But I get it. Only so much room. But here’s the thing. It’s used in the graphics to show different things like where they explain what parts do what. So they use it for that but not as a drivable car in the actual game. What the hell guys? Why tease me like that?

After playing actual racing games for a bit, ive realised that simcade games such as GT and forza are missing very essential part of a racing game, which is the racing. While yes the ultimate goal in a race is to be the winner of the race, but it isnt necessarily what makes racing fun, in sim game you can have really good time at a race even though you were the 15th on the race, but these games almost makes it so that you have to win every race. or atleast be on the podium or otherwise its just wasted time and you have to start over. and the rubberbanding makes even having any opponents on the track pointless. so you essentially just drive a track alone just dodging some traffic on your way to the finnish line.

That's exactly how I see it too. I'm surprised that @Roflwaffle16 dismisses that even after saying that it's a strong argument. My conspiracy theory is that they initially wanted to charge real money for roulette spins, but had to pivot due to regulatory push-back regarding gambling in video games. I don't have any proof, but it succinctly justifies all these anti-fun design decisions. Look at how they nerfed race payouts after the post-launch outcry. Did they do something similar with the roulette and invitation system? Idk how this can be so mismanaged. F*ck Kaz for being in charge of this franchise. It is a fantastic video.

I hope Assetto Corsa make a GT rival. They probably had the budget, as the original is one of the most popular games on steam, and they seem to know what the community wants (we'll see if AC2 can be easily moddable, by the way their talking it seems so) and the base they have currently is very good. All they would essentialy have to do is look at Gran Turismo 4 and tweak it around so it is more up to date and unique. Plus, the game would be availble on PC, XBox and Playstation, so eveyone would be able to play it.
@bartekkko Жыл бұрын
I'm afraid it's not as simple as that. I have huge nostalgia for Gt4, but as a game I think it's severely flawed. Were kunos able and willing to make a gt competitor, they should take inspiration from a lot of other places as well, specifically codemasters. Like in grid autosport, if you weren't able to win every time, the game would start expecting you to just do well in the midfield, which is a much more interesting place to be than the front of the pack. 1nsane(I know, made by invictus, published by codies) had so many wacky game modes and maps that would be impossible to do in real life but still were tons of fun as a kid. F1 2021 gave you goals during practice sessions that would (in theory) better prepare you for the race and give you development bonuses for the team. And the seemingly hardest part, having decent AI is already close to completion, because AI in ACC, while hardly perfect, is still some of the better I've seen in a sim
@potatogirlcultist19 Жыл бұрын
@@bartekkko Yeah I agree. I said just straight up copy GT4 because it would be miles better than any of the offerings we have had in the last 5 years. To take inspiration from more old racing games, what about the snow from project cars 2? Whilst maybe not the most realistic, it was a fun and unique feature, as you could take an LMP1 car for a spin (figuratively and literally) in the snow. The whole team building idea from GRID and F1 2021 is also pretty intriguing. I never played GRID, but I did play a bit of F1 2021. I thought it was a pretty well implemented feature, and with the abilities to branch out to other categories of racing, it would be a good game mode. Whilst B-Spec mode imo is pretty boring, since it's more of a managment mode (although it was pretty fun as a kid because me and a friend just set the drivers out to be as aggresive as a polar bear on LSD), combined with the team mode, it allows you to train the drivers up to become the best. If I remember correctly Forza Motorsport 1 had a similar feature, but you actually trained the AI by driving yourself. Kind of like a Chat GPT driver, where it regurgetates information from your driving. The special events from Gran Turismo 5 were also pretty fun. One time you got NASCAR training from Jeff Gordon (ok AC doesn't have the budget to do that), I remember a race on Tuscan roads in a yellow Murcielago and it was so dark you had to turn the blue racing line on to just see where the track went.

I've just recently noticed another issue and it appears whenever you try the split screen mode. Firstly when you go to car selection you can only choose from a select few cars that gt decide for you. I don't know how difficult it would be to let players select cars from their garage. I noticed this with my friend and even though he would have wanted to select my garage cars and myself include, we can't. Again making little reason to the random cars in the game. Furthermore you can't change any mfd options and it sticks you with track map only a final issue is that neither player can change any settings to suit themselves during the race. So say if one player has all assists on and wants most of them off, well that can't happen. I point out I love the gt series and gee up from gt2 onwards. But it's clear to say I'd agree with you in that the game is inheritly broken and I can't see it being fixed. There's just too many limitations and too many things that have no tactile meaning which as you say, may be what kaz wants. Which is sad considering the legacies of the games in the past. Mainly gt2 to gt4.

to me, the greatest problem is that Kazunori isn't a game designer and isn't interested in gaming. This leads to a producer trying to be an auteur of something that barely works as a game and falls way short of being the all encompassing realizations of his ideas because no hardware, resources and time will be enough to reach that. I don't want to give up on the charm some of PD's decisions bring to the table and that are completely unique, but I would also welcome some more rational and logical design choices being made by people who understand gaming and motorsports (and, no, sorry, whoever designed Gran Turismo racing aspect doesn't and I would go as far as to say never went to a race)

It's so cool to see somebody else who had a love for the mariner blue mx5 in gt3! My love for cars started out very similar. When I was 6, my brother gave me his old ps2. One of the games he had was gt3 a spec. I played that game for YEARS, almost every day.
