I was shocked and thought "how can anyone see on this thing, everything's so small". But towards the end of me using it, I adapted and became used to it. Tom, the reviews are already starting to come out. It looks like the PG42UQ's heatsink allows for a 100 nits brightness increase over the 42" LG C2, but only on small windows, such as 5%-10% (on a full window the LG is brighter for some reason). More importantly, the uniform brightness function disables the annoying auto-dimming. However, there are notable disadvantages. Besides lacking HLG and Dolby Vision, the PG42UQ is missing eARC -- that's a huge deal for those of us who want to use this display for both pcs AND consoles with soundbars. Apparently not many soundbars currently support 120hz 4k pass-thru, so eARC is the primary option.

How times have changed. If I had a console and PC this might be an option but I think I'd prefer a 38 - 49 inch ultra wide screen over this as I also use my PC and laptop for work "productivity" and I think looking left and right and using windows side by side would work much better on an ultrawide. Use by use case though I suppose but I don't see these TV style monitors becoming the norm for PC gaming. VERY cool tech though :)

I felt that way too, until I saw how someone else was using it. check out David Zhang on youtube. He has some practical tips and experience with using a 48" and now 42" OLED as a monitor. I definately see the benefits and intend to get one. I specifically like the OLED's because I won't feel compelled to have to use the entire screen if I don't have to since with OLED you only consume electricity for the pixels you're actually using vs an LCD which backlights the entire screen regardless. Kinda feels like a 'cloud monitor' pay-as-you-go :). For me it'd be more versatile since if I need extra space I can use it and not be constrained by the UW aspect ratio, but I'm not paying for it all the time even when I don't.

The 42" is cut from a motherglass where the other size also cut is a size that is made in less numbers whereas the 48" is cut from a panel where a more popular size is also cut so the panel production makes the 42" panel more costly to produce and thus the price closer to the 48" for the monitor or tv companies to purchase.

The huge sheet of glass has lets say 7 75" and 3 42" off that sheet. These are made up figures just for an example. So as i said it just that the smaller sizes are from the less profitable glass. People keep telling me you cannot see the difference between 4K at 32/28/24 inches, but you really can, even from normal viewing distances. The PPI for 4K at 24 inches is just perfect for work. Regarding games, I would have to try different sizes - perhaps with this use case I would've liked bigger picture, who knows.

Looks like a pretty nice monitor but what irks me is how it probably won't be compatible with calibration software like Calman which is a deal-killer for enthusiasts like myself who would use it for both gaming/entertainment as well as professional work. LG C2 42inch still seems like the current best all-round option.

How is a C2 ideal for pro work when auto-dimming when you're working on something, plus higher chance of burn-in with Taskbars etc? Text isn't sharp on an OLED TV, and brightness is low on one's without heatsinks
@iXzenoS2 жыл бұрын
@@DNGR369 Sounds like you haven't actually used a modern LG OLED for daily desktop usage. I currently have 2960 hours logged on my C1 using it for professional desktop work 10-15 hours a day and auto-dimming hasn't been an issue since turning off ABSL (TPC) in the service menu and changing Energy Saving Step to off in the settings. You can also turn off GPC although I've personally left it on because I don't notice it affecting my screen. ABL is the only feature you cannot turn off in any LG OLED but that's only a potential annoyance in HDR mode, which most creative professionals wouldn't be working in anyway. Burn-in is also a non-factor unless you constantly have static 100% white windows open on your OLED for hours upon hours every day, but I doubt anybody does that, even on a regular LCD monitor. Personally I always prefer dark mode interfaces (when available) and set the taskbar to auto-hide on my OLED. If I leave my desk for a few hours I just set the screen to off (which is basically a black screen screensaver) or minimize all windows until I return. I also use a curation of several dark wallpapers that rotates every few hours. I also use 2 more ultrawide monitors on the side of my OLED and keep static windows (like emails, chats, etc) open there instead of on my OLED. Most OLEDs these days also come with basic functions like pixel cleaning and pixel shift which further prevents burn-in. If you just use common sense and be smart about it, both auto-dimming and burn-in essentially becomes a non-issue. Text sharpness isn't an issue either because anyone using an LG OLED as a PC monitor should be using it in PC mode which has 10-bit 4:4:4 chroma subsampling. Pair that with features like ClearType that is included in the operating system and you wouldn't recognize any difference compared to a LCD, unless you literally read text a few inches away from the screen. At normal viewing distances with the optimal settings, text clarity is again a non-issue. If you use common sense and be smart about using the OLED correctly, then all of the things you mentioned is nothing to be concerned about.

@@iXzenoS Thank you for your thoughts. I recently bought the 42" C2 and have been considering returning it and waiting for the PG42 to be available. Dont get me wrong, I love the C2, but have found the auto darken a tiny bit irksome, and also would love it to behave more like a monitor when I walk away (wakes/sleeps with the computer). I recently learned about wake over lan and will look into that for changing it to behave like a monitor. Thats a small detail. It was encouraging to hear your experience with no burn-in. Ive done the same configurations as you, but havent turned off the auto darken feature. Is it worth the cost of the service remote? Thanks in advance.
@iXzenoS2 жыл бұрын
@@cloggedpitot1 Yes definitely! Turning off auto-dimming (TPC/ABSL) was a game-changer for me. There was nothing more annoying with my OLED than having the screen dim and brighten up here and there while reading the web or doing professional creative work. The service remote isn't that expensive and you can always use it with other LG OLEDs you buy in the future...I say get the remote, try turning off TPC and if you still don't like it, then return it.

Definitely interesting. I'm on an LG 38 inch ultrawide now... maybe if i get a slightly deeper desk, the 48 inch would be an upgrade path. But even the 42 would have OLED vs the not-OLED I have now.

@thehoshgames2 жыл бұрын
The problem is what size fits on your desk, at what is a good distance, for your gaming session. To me 48" is too large and forces me to set too far away, I used a 49" TV I happen to have and a Dell 43" work monitor for reference. I use 32" monitors for gaming currently but want to fill, but not overfill, my vision area (glasses limit it some). So I have been looking at going with a 38" 1600p or a 40" 5k2k Ultra-Wide up to a 43" 4k 16:9 panel. They are about the same width, just more height with the 16:9 4k panel, which might be better. Hence why I have been watching for these reviews since the announcement, and it has the Display-port that is >120Hz and is not gloss screen, which are both requirements for me.

HDTechTV literally just posted same review video shot at that same facility lol I got a Sony A90K 42” yesterday and put it on my coffee table for PS5 only. Perks of being a bachelor. If I was a PC gamer I wouldn’t of got the Sony but this one looks good for PC and heatsink tech is dope. I like the Sony and premium remote with brushed aluminum and backlight also and I was tired of expensive gaming monitors with no remote control always having to change settings manually on the device buttons. The Sony since it’s a TV has an optical output for my Astro headset which was a good selling point that this Asus most likely doesn’t have was a good selling point now that every gaming monitor doesn’t have optical which annoying as well so no digital audio extractor BS needed

It's about 1350 on Amazon. I really want to get this. I have a question though. I've never seen an OLED panel in person. Is it really that much better/prettier than a regular lcd (or whatever is the common type) ?? I would imagine viewing the OLED through my screen an Alienware ultrawide wouldn't do it any justice.
