ROG THOR to the rescue - The Importance of your PSU

Hey good people. Here's a quick video on what I had just gone through several months ago regarding a PSU that actually failed. Fortunately did not take any other hardware with it, but it did get me thinking about the importance of your PSU, which is often overlooked in favour of everything else.
That said, check your PSU, even if it's a quality one, after a few years it may not be good enough anymore. So before that happens, check your PSU every couple of years and under G, buy quality PSUs. I could have lost both 7900XTX and 7800XT if the faulty PSU wasn't a quality one.

I've abused my 1200W ROG Thor P2 Gaming with a ROG Strix 4090 for well over a year and it hasn't skipped a beat. Fantastic PSU!

They cost a fortune, but I've yet to have anyone tell me they are anything but incredible PSUs delivering over and above their spec more often than not.

PSUs are normally an after thought for most PC builders, yet it is the one device your entire rig relies on to work. It's sad that most people become penny wise but pound foolish when selecting a PSU seeing as it will determine the lifespan of all the other expensive parts in the rig.

Screen and PSU are always left till last yet they last the longest of all components.

I'm using a Corsair 1000w PSU ( I got for a now sold system that needed it) because I borked my Thor 850w.

You mean the Thor packed up or that you 'killed' it? Surely just using it would not qualify as 'borking' it unless it was providing 1KW continously with no end etc.

​@@TheOverclockerMagazine I changed my motherboard vertically (because of having a radiator on top of my Core P3) and screws fell into the PSU. I didn't initially know they had gone in but refilling my loop tripped my electricity. I opened ithe PSU (after lettitng it drain) to find the screws were in the PSU and I also found liquid at the bottom I poured out. I think another screw went in but if so it was wedged beyond reach. Turning the PSU on again still cuased my electricty to trip. I had dummy loaded my PSU so no harm to the board.

@@Safetytrousers Ah dang that sucks. Another reason why I let go of my custom loop. I'm prone to such things. Glad it's sorted. 👍

I stopped buying ASUS ROG a long time ago. MSI Unify is much better with AMD. As for the PSU my latest system is on a Corsair RM850X. My secondary system is on a 2014 XFX (Seasonic) 850Watt single rail PSU. I have a AMD RX6900XT so I know my PSU is still good😅

Those are good PSUs but please be weary of that XFX unit. I'm confident it was built solid however 10 years is about as long as it'll last, so maybe a backup in case it fails. I'm just glad the faulty PSU on my side didn't take out my other gear
