"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

@bobwinters5572
@bobwinters5572 2 жыл бұрын
I think what it's about is finding Biden so disappointing that he's forced to conclude the Democrats are useless and don't actually agree with his opinions. That attitude runs into the Rep-Dem duopoly which forces him to support a candidate he disagrees with, which could well make the useless Dem politicians lose. Or even, Trump won an insurgent campaign in the Republican Party, so maybe that party is more susceptible to changing its attitude.

Well I get that, because I feel like I need to qualify my statements when I'm criticizing people who I don't share as many of the same values with because it's super easy to just criticize a convenient boogeyman who isn't weighed down by the burden of my own personal identitiy. It just feels like the right thing to do to extend my credibiility with my intended audience. Does that make sense? When I'm criticizing people with a vested interest in dismisssing my argument just because I'm disagreeing with their holy political opinion, it can help to show them that you can see where the double standards are without needing a partisan movtivation. It's worrisome that so many think Rogan's views are inconsistent or incompatible with each other. The electorate has been convinced that there is only two sides to every argument, and that independents with arching views are somehow disingenuous or misguided.

Assault weapons dont exist its a political label. Assault Rifles do exist and semi automatic AR and HK and AK platforms for a civilian market still qualify as assault rifles. Most soldiers use the semi automatic mode over the fully automatic mode in actual combat. An assault weapon is a meaningless designation but a semi automatic assault rifle is used to often and is to formidable to continue selling to the general public. Bump stocks can juice up a semi automatic assault rifle for difilating fire from above into large densely packed crowds and in semi auto a single person highly motivated can run and fire against a large group of cops with the same type of rifle That in the end is what an assault rifle can do different than other types of firearms. An semi auto assault rifle even in the hands of a untrained shooter can take on multiple trained shooters also armed with assault rifles if the untrained shooter is highly motivated and willing to run towards the officers firing using natural point shooting with 20 or 30 round magazines. No other legally available fire arms have the nessasary qualities needed for a untrained person to take on several trained shooters using aggressive movement combined with firing. To claim a semi automatic AR is not an assault rifle is pretty thin a claim the use of them to carry out the mass slaughter of children and adults puts them far above any other civilian weapon system than any other. They take the least amount of skill to inflict the most amount of devastation

Joe Rogan: I'm so far from being a Conservative. Also, Rogan: lists a bunch of issues where he agrees with conservatives, keeps agreeing with Conservatives, keeps having conservatives on his show, left California for Texas and say that he wants the Ultra MAGA governor of Florida to be president. He literally can't list a single thing that makes him a liberal much less the bleeding-heart liberal he says he is.

Rogan has already said in 2016 he would support Jesse Ventura, who is very Left & anti-establishment. All we have to do to get Rogan off DeSantis is get Ventura to run. The only thing holding him back in 2020 was having to give up his job at RT and lose his healthcare during a pandemic and while his wife was awaiting medical tests. That is obviously no longer an issue since every American at RT lost their job, and I believe his wife would be on Medicare now anyway which was another point he had made and one reason he supports universal healthcare. He also supports legal weed, ending wars and using the money normally handed over to military industrial complex to clean up the environment instead, upholding the 2nd amendment while having robust regulations in place where you have to prove you can safely operate the guns and aren't a danger, not only raising the minimum wage but instituting a maximum wage for people paying themselves salaries of 10s of millions, and so much more. Congress would obviously obstruct as much as they could, but then he would publicly call out and shame them and actually expose all the corruption and drain the swamp.

@playea123
@playea123 2 жыл бұрын
@@BenjamUniverse He doesn't. You are correct, but since everyone says that voting third party is throwing away your vote, Joe's options, in his head at least, are likely Biden, Trump, Kamala and maybe Buttigig. Biden and his party also can't get a meaningful piece of legislation that benefits normal people and not companies passed. At some point, if you have the options of someone who cannot lead at all or a leader who you disagree with on certain issues but can command respect of his party and get things done, most people would go with the latter. That's how you end up with countries that want a strong military man as president, the other options can get things done or fuck things up. Bad leaders can fuck up and drive away people from idealogies that would otherwise make sense. If the Dems run Biden, Kamala or Buttigig, I won't vote for them. I'm also not gonna go and vote for Desantis but I have no problem voting third party or not voting at all. The logic might not make sense because Joe is a massive personality and following.
