Red Deer Hunting - Ruahine Ranges Oct 2018

Join me and my compadre the Big "O" as we head into the Ruahine Ranges to chasing red deer. We were met by some of the worst conditions for hunting & shooting, but we stuck it out and manage to get a couple of long-range shots away. Needle in a haystack. Sometimes everything is against you and your best intentions. You both gave it a crack and did it wisely, one vectoring the other onto the spot and then following your instincts. We can only do so much under the circumstances. The good thing to take note of and for people to remember is you need to know when to call it a day and start to look after your own well being. In such finicky weather the tables can be turned against you in a heart-beat. You gave it a good go that's all anyone can ask. Great video guy's. Chur!!

Just watched your shots on the video again and one of the things that catches LR shooters out is bullet path at the target. The tendency is to forget the longer the distance the more acute the angle is as it penetrates the animal. Then add to this the height difference with line of sight from shooter to target and the angle becomes even greater. End result is that even a low mid shoulder shot can end up punching out the bottom of the chest missing the vital kill zone or as often seen ending up as heart shots.
