Federer's do-or-die attitude towards remaining on the baseline is one of my favourite things about his game. He always wants to remain aggressive, and it means he can handle things like awkward or fast half-volleys like nobody else.

That serve had so much weight and speed. Nadal hits his shots differently, weight with heavy topspin which Federer had trouble with. Roddick's were hard and flat.
@tehatte2 жыл бұрын
A good return but not one of the best. Why? Yes the ball was fast but the placement was not good, it was close to Federer and right at his backhand position he didn’t have to move much, he didn’t hit back but just blocked the ball, a smart choice because if he hit back on a fast ball it would likely go long. So it’s not the speed but rather the placement of the serve is what makes it hard to return. When a serve is around 120 or even 110 mph but right in the corner it’s harder to return because though it’s not as fast as 140 mph it’s out of your reach. Who’s the best at returning these serves? Djokovic, because he has so much flexibility in his body. Not only he can get those difficult balls back but back deep right at your feet, showing his great ability to adjust the weight on the return at different and difficult positions.

@@razorback9926 These are your own claims. While the big 3, or big 4 if include Murray all return the serve good, many experts consider Djokovic is the best in general, not only compared to the others, but ever. The only player they compare with Djokovic is actually Agassi. People usually don’t compare the 2nd serve return much, they do more on the first serve because it’s fast and harder to return. The is where Djokovic is a monster in returning. You can google, search on youtube about this. I don’t need to convince you. The GOAT debate? Don’t mention it here. I’m tired of hearing it because I’ve already read/heard of this debate as much as anyone that cares about it.

@bonzwah12 жыл бұрын
To be clear, I would not say the placement was not good. You seem to be comparing the placement to a t-serve or out wide serve but this was a body serve. It's not perfect placement but it certainly isn't in the slot either. This was definitely a very difficult return to make, as even a slight difference in timing and racket placement would have resulted in the ball going long or being an easy put away shot. A young Djokovic actually struggled with roddick a lot, and it's because he wasn't as good as fed at returning roddick's serve. No doubt Djokovic is the better returner overall, far better at dealing with the 110 to 120 out wide serves you were describing than fed was. But against a roddick body serve, it's less technique and flexibility and more just raw reflexes and feel.
@tehatte2 жыл бұрын
@@bonzwah1 That serve didn’t go right in the middle of Federer’s body but more like between his body and the T, within his reach. The only difficulty is the ball speed. I haven’t seen any clips of Djokovic return Roddick serves but they played h2h all before 2012 with Djokovic only lost before 2010 when he was young. He developed his return skill over the years but even back then he beat Roddick 4 times, breaking many of Roddick serve games, so it’s obvious he knew how to return Roddick serves. I saw live he played vs Medvedev in Cincinnati in a match Medvedev thru many 130+ mph flat serves at him, including second serves. Though he lost a close match to Medvedev he did return many of those fast serves.
@bonzwah12 жыл бұрын
@@tehatte I already said the placement wasn't perfect, but was pointing out that you shouldn't compare the placement to the lines, but to fed's body. the placement was halfway between the backhand slot and the body. not perfect, but not easy to return either and difficulty is ramped up by the raw pace of the serve. this is exactly the type of serve that fed handles better than djokovic. but to be clear, djokovic is the greatest returner of all time. if you're trying to argue he's good at returning, you will find no argument from anyone. but there is no doubt that fed handled roddick more easily. are you seriously trying to argue against that point? because if you are I can indulge that argument, but I don't want to waste my time if that's not what you're trying to say.
@chipmoffatt77482 жыл бұрын
For sure the good ones make it look easy but if the serve is not that hard to read, the return is not impossible no matter the mph it is hit at. The tennis graveyard is full of young bucks who can serve almost as fast as AR and never get beyond a strategy of just blowing people off the court. It works at a lower level but not against an all time great. Djokovic was saying last week one of the things that makes Kyrgios serve so tough is you can't read--toss always looks the same. key
@tehatte2 жыл бұрын
@@bonzwah1 To be more correct I should the placement of this serve was not as good as the serves, even if slower, at the T or wide. Of course the serve was good. Now if it was exactly right at your body it would even be better. To be honest there’s nothing special about Djokovic, or anyone, returning serves like this one. Many players can do the same. Most pros can handle pace like this. They’ve trained their eyes to see ball in slow motion. It’s only hard when they have to move even only one step to get to the ball because they’ll be late. We all know this. This is where Djokovic is better then most. If you follow soccer this is similar to a goalie in a penalty kick where he has to guess to dive early one way or another. Djokovic uses his experience and takes time during the match to improve his guessing during the serve. To me Federer has excellent flexes but he uses a lot of blocking or chopping/slicing in returning, reducing the time from taking the racket back too far. Djokovic hits back at the serves that’s why his return has more pace. I’m a Djokovic fan obviously but I’m not here to bragg about his serve return skills because so many people like you said already know it. I admire Federer’s forehand and serve and actually try to copy mine after his. But I don’t see anything special in his return and don’t see why poeple use one example of a return like this to say, wow the best return ever or whatever. Many players randomly in their career did some returns as good as these, I’m pretty sure.

How to return a 140 mph serve: give it a love tap.

Absolute bullet of a serve, Federer makes it look easy. At that speed, you can't see it, must have to be able to read the toss/ guess right. & even then, getting the ball in the racket's sweetspot is no guarentee. Peak Fed was something else

how federer returned that serve with a single backhand whip is amazing, beautiful how he kept the racket face closed but let’s be honest, that’s an 95% luck shot, federer did his part perfectly but that landing point is just unlucky for roddick and lucky for federer

Andy's serve was poorly placed - right in Roger's strike zone. Maybe he was going for a body serve, but it just wasn't accurate. Roger simply stuck out his racket and bunted it back. What I find remarkable, though, was the precision of Roger's return: right on the baseline before Andy could do anything about it.

Andy Roddick has my vote for best server ever. When he was on top of his game, and he was several times in the biggest spots, even a peak Fed couldn't break him. 2009 final, so close, held 36(!) service games before being broken to lose. Unfortunately, tiebreaks exist.

Roddick had a massive serve, but never really improved on his placement or tactics. Federer was a better server, but the best serve ever has got to belong to Pistol Pete.

@@mauricefrerejean8645 Look at the scoreline of this game. Roddick has already held serve against Federer 12 times.

Nice to see the bully server get broken. So used to serving winners and ending the point that he isn’t mentally prepared to handle Federer’s very soft baseline return.

If its straight at the player it doesnt matter if its a 150mph serve, the player just has to block it and use the pace of the serve to return it.
