Damn, Jordan was THE most popular athlete in the world during his playing days. Every great athlete right now, from virtually every sport, grew up watching Michael Jordan.
@XDahAznManX10 жыл бұрын
I mean, in America. I came from Asia and I had literally no idea who Michael Jordan was, or any basketball player until my friends talked about them. Mind you I wasn't poor and I did have a television and a computer, but really basketball is almost irrelevant in other countries.
@CrimsonUniverse2210 жыл бұрын
Hoang Nguyen I find that hard to believe. The people who LITERALLY have no clue who Jordan is, usually do not associate with any sport whatsoever, never picked up a ball, never participated in any sports, etc. I spent the first 11 years of my life overseas, five in Japan, six in Bangkok. These are not basketball dominated countries at the least, it was soccer and baseball (Japan). Still, virtually everyone I knew at least HEARD of the name Michael Jordan. Virtually everyone I knew, didn't know certain things like the team he played for, the sport he played, heck, a few people I knew thought he was a white guy. But the NAME was popular, and most if not all people had an idea that the athlete Michael Jordan was a significant figure in sports. Jordan also has marketing. Anyone who has been to a shoe store, has seen the Air Jordan symbol at some point in their lives. People who haven't, don't have the money to go to a shoe store. Of course, not EVERYONE knows who he is. There are millions of people out there who simply do not watch sports. If you go on google, and search for most popular athletes of all time, Jordan will be #1 virtually all the time. That's not by accident.
@njsfer10 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I'm from Portugal where basketball isn't and never was very popular (football=soccer, athletics, cycling, roller hockey were more popular) but instead the greatest sportsman at that time (and arguably, all time) was Michael Jordan. I watched NBA Live every saturday morning only to watch Jordan play in the 90's. After he quit i never watched NBA again. Without Jordan's magic the game is not the same. I know that there are/were other great players like LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett... but it isn't the same thing. I'm 30 and without a doubt Jordan was my reference in sports when i was a kid and basketball wasn't even my favorite player. It seems that he was also a reference for Roger as it was to so many legends that played totally different sports. Just like brazilian "soccer" legend Ronaldinho Gaúcho. Watch it: watch?v=vlYigV0wdXM
@CrimsonUniverse229 жыл бұрын
***** Jordan was popular here? Where is "here?" America? If you mean America, heck no, Jordan was way more popular in America than Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras. Is that a joke? Jordan was THE most popular athlete in the late 80's and most of the 90's in America, that's not a debate. Now, Diego Maradona and Jordan were both extremely popular worldwide in the 80's and 90's. Jordan had the marketing and brand advantage, it's speculation as to which one as actually the more popular one.

i don't find your points very relevant either, very superficial completely missing the context, i mean everyone can find his own stupid philosophy why one player is better then the other and make arguments that make sense only to him...coming from a little country? what better country in the world would be suitable to come from to play a sport like tennis professionally then switzerland? especially if you are from a rich family... MJ couldn't even afford to play tennis to begin with lol...Federer had all the tools, talent, facilities, coaches, money, support, only thing they were all afraid about was his temper that usually got the best of him when he was younger. Many other players had a much more difficult path to success, coming from central/eastern european countries or asia, most were praying for a chance to go to live and train to switzerland/germany/spain or usa, just so they can keep their dreams alive.... not to even talk about how tough nba was back in the 80's and 90's, defense was so fucking hardcore it is not even comparable to now, every match you had to be ready to rumble, he knew he was to get hit all the time, players were on a mission to hurt him (Pistons team for example). It took MJ time to mature and toughen up then achieve his full potential, whilst with Roger, everyone knew he was a prodigy as a teenager already. I wouldn't say MJ had it easier by any means...

Roger Federer might be the most famous athlete alive now. He’s achieved almost everything possible in sport and he’s widely renowned as the GOAT and even HE is a fan boy when talking to MJ. That’s the power that MJ has. He’s just something else man.

As for the most famous athletes, I will go with Cr7 and Messi. And as for his GOAT status, Novak and Rafa have a good deal of say at it. So your statement isn't actually right
@eaglewinnings80034 жыл бұрын
@kami yann You can “go with” whatever you want. Your opinion means nothing. The fact of the matter is that Federer’s popularity globally is right there w/ Messi & Ronaldo if just bc of the fact that he’s almost a half decade older than them and has been doing it longer. As far as tennis goes the fact that Federer is 5-6 years older than Djokovic and Nadal and is still able to hold his own against them (has won 6 of the last 7 meetings against Nadal and actually has a winning record against Nadal away from clay) speaks for itself. Thanks for trolling.

The amount of ignorance in this comments section from tennis fans, or people who aren't too familiar with Michael Jordan's career achievements and legacy, absolutely disgusts me. If it isn't clear to you by now, let me explain. How fucking amazing is Federer right? He is inarguably the greatest tennis player in history (for me he's a tie with Nadal - why? because he has more accolades than Nadal, but Nadal beats him 2 out of every 3 matches they meet. Also Nadal is much younger so still has time to match his number of achievements. In fact, just a few years ago, he had more titles than Federer did at that same age Nadal was, but knee injuries took a toll and deviated him from those projections of outscoring Federer in achievements). Back to my point, with all that epicness that Federer holds, he's still clearly start struck here, and is fangirling his pants off over MJ, nervous and giggly as fuck. Think that's just a one off scenario? Let's go a bit further. Barack Obama, class act former President of the United States, presents MJ with a Medal of Freedom for his impact in the sport and inspiring millions to be at their best, did not bother to hide what a huge fanboy he was. Let's go one more further, Oprah! Watch her interviews with MJ. The one with MJ and Barkley together where she said something that MJ didn't agree with, and MJ told her he's going to have to straighten her out with her facts, Charles Barkley tries to interject in a way defending Oprah, but Oprah keeps insisting, "No, let him straighten me out, let Michael straighten me out, I want him to straighten me out!" (paraphrased from memory, pardon the slight inaccuracies in the story). If you go and watch it, you can clearly sense some borderline sexual innuendo in what and how she said that. Like a naughty girl confessing to her wrong doings, asking for punishment. Furthermore, throughout the interview, she's blushing and gushing over him, in complete awe of his presence. This is Oprah we are talking about, for the LOVE OF GOD!! Most of the greatest personalities in the world look up to Michael Jordan and are huge fans. Simply put, Michael Jordan has the ability to dwarf the presence of other greats around him, and make them look insignificant in comparison. And this is not me being poetic with uses of hyperbole. Most sports analysts and journalists rate him as the greatest athlete or sports player of all time, even ranking over Muhammad Ali. Players like Beckham and LeBron james even adopted his jersey number - 23, because they were huge fans of his. Michael Phelps, another great of the sports who's idol was - and still is- Michael Jordan. All the people who grew up watching MJ, wanted to be like Mike, but not everyone could. Many of you still may not understand the true depth of what I'm saying, but believe me, just spend a few days or weeks looking up old Michael Jordan footage, KZbin is FULL of those archive videos. Read into his stats and stories in articles. Those few weeks will soon turn into months, and next thing you know, you've immersed yourself into the world of Michael Jordan wonder. His Airness: Unparalleled drive for excellence, and will to win and compete. Greatest scorer in the game. Relentless. Resilient. Defied the laws of gravity with his infamous hang time, and as such was able to switch the ball from hand to hand 2-3 times in the air to avoid a barrage of top tier elite league defenders who were always double and triple teaming him. Clutch player in heated last second moments of major games. Treated every practice game (scrimmages) like it was game 7 of the finals. Never allowed a finals game to go to game 7. Played in a finals game with the flu and won that game for his team with 38 points! Freak of nature. Creative flair in his gameplay. Master trash talker. And no one ever dared to trash talk to him, because the unwritten rule amongst the NBA fraternity was "Never trash talk to Michael Jordan". Why? Because it made him become better. If you were foolish enough to point out a slow start to his game, he would take it to heart, and with his incredible ability to turn negatives into positives, he'd go on a mission of vengeance to prove you wrong and slam 40-50 points on your head the next game, if not in that game. He was a mastermind when it came to psychological warfare. An assassin on and off the court. A pathological winner. He had an insatiable desire to win, and absolutely annihilate anyone who dared step in his path. Everyday of his life in the NBA, he set out on a warpath, to completely and utterly destroy any hope in the hearts of the mere mortals who dared to stand against him. He was ruthless and inhuman. He had no place for softspots or weaknesses. Closest thing to athletic perfection you will ever see. Does anyone else even come close? Not even. Mike drop. (That's right, that pun was intended. And so was the spelling error).

Nadal's playing style led to those injuries which derailed his win pace. It wasn't a fluke, he red-lined his body to beat Fed back in certain important events like 2009 AO final.

hismajesty653 absolutely not denying MJ's achievements.... His athletic ability was way ahead of time....hence he's the GOAT.....however a survey was conducted to know that most respected and influential person......the person who topped that list was Nelson Mandela.....2nd on that list was Roger .....the names you mentioned Oprah and Obama they were 7th and 16th.... Roger Federer dare I say has the appeal that Mohammed Ali had... beyond his sport but in general walk of life...... having watched them both I'd say Roger is the most talented and efficient athelete.....a niche above Jordan too....he makes everything look ridiculously easy
@BigSheldonTheory7 жыл бұрын
Not gonna argue your arguement for influence, but I'm of course talking athletetics wise. That includes skill set in their sport, achievements, and intangibles. Same thing usually happens when people compare MJ to Muhammad Ali, people know they can't win the argument in favour of Ali, so they quickly bring in his civil and political achievements outside of sports, what he stood for, the icon that he was OUTSIDE of boxing. Which automatically makes them admit defeat in the debate, because we're not talking about their life outside of sports. It's like trying to compare two bodybuilders, and debating who's the better bodybuilder, then suddenly someone says, will the first one goes to church every Sunday, whereas the second one doesn't... Who gives a flying fuck! Lol. Also, not sure what kind of people they were surveying, but Federer does not deserve to be 2nd on the list over the likes of Muhammad Ali and Oprah. Granted he does a fair amount of humanitarian work, plays games for charity, it still doesn't even come close to what kind of an influence Muhammad Ali had in the African American, African and Muslim community. And what he stood for transcended beyond those three groups of populations. He represented all the minorities and weak people who were bullied or put down by the system, because he stood up to the oppressors and powers that be, in a time where the idea of political correctness could not be fathomed. And we all know what Oprah has done as well for the less fortunate. Although outside of Jordan's sporting career, he may not be popular for his humanitarian work (though I'm pretty sure he's done his fair share of philanthropy), his Jordan brand - which may seem like a materialistic argument, but shouldn't be seen that way - is iconic. He not only created an unprecedented dynasty over at the Chicago Bulls, but also created an empire with Air Jordan, which skyrocketed Nike to success in its early years. He is the first and only athlete to become a billionaire. How is this relevant? Because this is as inspiring as it gets, in terms of people pursuing their dreams and goals. Remember, it's not only the Air Jordan brand (think jumpman logo) that rakes in hundreds of millions of dollars of profit a year, but also Jordan himself being tied and associated to Nike through all their commercials and endorsements. They are two separate factors in his brand effect. Finally, Jordan also made things look relatively easy. Look at every jump shot he took. When he played in the post and finished with his infamous fadeaway. And his circus layups in which he'd dodge and weave his hands and the ball in the air past 3 defenders. When he occasionally did a free throw with his eyes closed (and landed the shot). Skill wise, he was unmatched. Mentally speaking, he never broke. Federer's been mentally broken before - MANY TIMES (think Marat Safin, Mario Ancic, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic). Muhammad Ali had weaknesses in his game, and has admitted many times post career - like many boxers, including Rocky Balboa! lol - that he used to get scared before fights. Meaning all that trash talk he did was a character he played, to not only psyche out his opponent, but also convince himself he could do it. MJ never got scared, because he had no weaknesses. He had complete trust, faith and confidence in himself that he would bring it. Yes I know boxing is a fighting sport with the potential for violence, hostility and maybe mental or physical injuries and death, but I'm talking about the basic fear of losing, not the fear of getting hurt.

Federer a class act. Jordan a nasty, egoistic, vindictive, arrogant, narcissistic bully - a horrible person Jordan clearly thinks he's greater than Federer (just look at how he talks down to him in this interview) whereas in truth Federer is a much bigger global star.
@karimuddin32677 жыл бұрын
Federer is such a nice guy that he acts like he's the fan in this video and whenever he talks about Jordan - that's his humility. Jordan is just a fan of himself. Globally Federer is a bigger sporting icon than Jordan. I don't think Americans realise that outside of their country hardly anyone gives a shit about Jordan. Federer is huge everywhere: Europe, Asia (including China and India), Africa, South America, Middle East and son on. The only comparable athletes globally are Messi and Ronaldo simply because football is THE global sport.

Look, I understand and agree with your characterization of said players. But Roger ain't more famous than Jordan. A friend of mine from Canada went to see some African countries and he says to me "Even in out-of-touch villages in the middle of nowhere they know what Coca-Cola and who Jordan is. Jordan couldn't get out of his hotel in 1992 Barcelona Olympics. I don't remember Roger needing that much security and crazy fans in his Olympic appearences. Jordan retired in 1993 for the first time, one of the reasons was his complete dominance killed his desire in the game and he couldn't handle his fame. When Jordan's father was killed by two young people who had no idea it was Jordan's father, one of the murderers got arrested with a MJ jersey. Your father is killed, the murderer wears your jersey. RF hats are widespread and that logo is one of the most recognizable logos today. But Jumpman logo easily beats it. Even Jordan's tongue-out graffitis around the globe might be more widespread. Jordan made Nike, Nike. He's one of the greatest athletes ever, at the Mt. Rushmore of that discussion. Roger is the GOAT and Novak&Nadal probably won't catch him while Borg&Laver&Sampras weren't as great as Roger. But he doesn't have the dominance Michael had.
