For me the biggest difference of this tennis 2 decades ago is not the shot-making, it's the movement. Fish's movement would not survive in the modern game - too sluggish/poor.... [Edit: actually, looking at how Roger is moving and the occasional slips by both of them - maybe it was actually quite a slippery surface and Fish was 'skating' on it....]

Actually the grass of today and 2003 is roughly the same The first year of slower grass occurred in 2002, when everyone was suprised to see a final between 2 baseliners, nalbandian and hewitt. Federer who has always been a baseliner actually had very poor results on the faster slicker grass, and really benefitted with the slowdown.

Federer is the player with the highest technical level ever - but it must be acknowledged that Djokovic and Nadal won more big titles. So who is the GOAT is a matter of preference as it is not really defined by anyone :-). Fish btw, had almost forgotten about him. I think he had to leave tennis as he developed heart issues, but I think he is ok now.

It's pretty hard to contest Djokovic's goat status at this point though. He has been the most consistently dominant player in tennis for so long now. It isn't much use being the most technically gifted if you cant apply your skills half the time. Moreover, tennis is more than just a technical game, it demands considerable mental and physical toughness too.

And I think it was from post 2012 that his bh started going to shit

@@TDTheTruth When I watch those Monte Carlo or Rome clay finals against Rafa, Roger definitely had one of the best backhands in the world at his peak, even on clay. He would win clay Masters with it today. There were very few players who could withstand Nadal's forehand as well as Roger could. Yeah, those Roland Garros finals were poor, but a couple of duds in Paris misled generations into completely mistaken conclusions about Roger's backhand.
@J.-M.2 ай бұрын
@@jmanly707 Nobody dominates with their backhand. Every top player dominates with their forehand and (ideally) a serve. Every single one. That's the definition of modern tennis. Even players with the best backhands like Djokovic primarily dominate with their forehand (you could very clearly see it in Paris several days ago). The backhand is not a shot for dominating. Roger's backhand was extremely brilliant, it had totally unique defensive skills that people still dedicate video tributes to. No wonder players used to say they had nowehere to go against him in those peak years (2003-2007), because he was bulletproof. They couldn't attack his forehand or backhand, nothing worked, because both his forehand and backhand were top-class. He definitely had one of the best, most skillful and versatile backhands in the world.

I really struggle to understand how anyone that has followed the sport of tennis for 30 plus years could consider Djokovic to be the greatest to have played. I can't even make it though one of his matches without succumbing to boredom. I get that his numbers are great but he just lacks that X factor and magic that makes so many love sportsman like Federer or Jordan. I can remember in the mid 2000's I would jump at the chance to watch Federer play anyone regardless of ranking just to witness his latest magic trick (same with Jordan in the late 80's /early 90's). I can't imagine David Foster Wallace ever wanting to write about Djokovic.
@keisukeshingen2 ай бұрын
it's precisely because of numbers that people consider djokovic to be the goat. his style is bloody boring and his stamina and endurance throughout his career is disgustingly and atrociously good, but the fact that he could go toe to toe with fed on grass and rafa on clay and get the most number of slams and whatnot proves that he is a phenomenal player. Fed is still the most exciting and magical player to have ever graced the sport, but to a lot of people, djokovic's consistency is what seals the deal. Imo?
