It was the best clay surface not only for play but also for TV viewing, however, Rafa, Doper and others voiced their complaints and successfully prevented ATP from ever bringing it back. All because they couldn't play on it! Verdasco even beat Rafa their, something he hadn't done before.

yeah they shouldve kept it but blue clay was incredibly slippery and the ball just takes off on that surface

Beautiful. Federer and Edberg are like brothers who have the same game style. Example : One handed backhand.

These are just the passing shots. The clip should include those Edberg backhands which setup the pass or the volley, where he often either sliced back deep into the corner a strong forehand/backhand or even a serve from the opponent, disrupting his rhythm , allowing Edberg to sneak up to the net or dismiss a weaker ball coming from one side of the court.

Edberg's backhand is for me the more elegant, I love the way his body is facing the court at the end of the movement, able to go quickly to the net.... He must use a little bit more torsion, giving this dancer elegance, with a part of his power coming from the rotation of the body itself. I could say the same for the difference of the serve between Federer and Sampras (the torsion is obviously in a different axis).

Federer had problems with his back that's why his backhands is rather stiff.Edberg has a much better backhand considering the string technology of the 80s.

Agreed. Edberg's one-handed backhand is the best of all time. Although Denis Shapovalov's isn't too shabby either. And Justine Henin's is an honorable mention.

@@jerrycallows3906 Agreed! But I think that Shapovalov, Hénin, Gasquet backhands, as beautiful and elegant they are, have less variety than Edberg's ones.

See Edberg vs Chang at french open in 1996 and you will change idea about Edberg's backhand( the video on youtube lasts 17 minutes but there are so much good points ).

@@valeriocostantini1959 Edberg vs Chang in the '89 French Open Finals was a good one (I didn't know they met again at the French). It's unfortunate Edberg was a serve and volleyer so we couldn't get to enjoy watching his backhand very much unless he's playing on clay.
@jerrycallows3906
@jerrycallows3906 Жыл бұрын
Of course because this video is about backhands. But if you see highlights of Edberg's best points, almost most all of them are his backhand passing shots. And some volleys. But hardly any forehand shots. His backhand was beautiful, but his forehand, not so much. To put it mildly. Lol

@@jerrycallows3906 I think the '96 match is better if you want to see some nice backhands from the baseline, because racket technology had improved. I actually think Edberg's backhand is better than Roger's, if we consider technology back and now. Of course his forehand was awful, and I don't know why( he used a continental grip, but Mcenroe also did, and their forehands can't be comparedin terms of efficiency).
