Do you have a "wonder wobbler"? It's like a small fat fish, chrome and wobbles in the water. It's about 50 yrs old, right at the start of lure fishing. If not I think KZbin or google would have it. It was very effective.
@uncletiggermclaren75923 ай бұрын
We are all adding our idea about how to keep them from jumping and throwing the hook, so I will have my go now. :) The most important thing with Kahawai ( which Australians call sea sea salmon ) is that you keep some weight on them the entire time. And the reason is because their mouth has a lot of weak parts compared to other fish, to bite, the fish hinges open its mouth like a bag, and when it is open like that, a large part of it is very thin cartilage with paper thin skin on it. And if the tip of your hook goes through that, it tears a slot in it till the bight of the hook is stopped by the jaw or the hinge structure of the mouth. And then you have almost certainly not got the tip of the hook and the barb set in anything, you are holding the fish entirely by pulling the bight ( inside curve ) of the hook on whatever stopped it pulling through that thin section. Imagine holding up a bucket by crooking your finger around the handle. Now, when you let the weight off the fish, he wags his head, and half the time the hook simply flies free of whatever it is pulling on, and the tear in the skin doesn't stop it. Ad they like to jump, so you have to be ready the instant they do and increase the weight you have on them, because once in the air, they will come towards you much faster, giving themselves some slack. And as we saw in the clip, they throw the hook very often once they are in the air. Once you have caught a lot of them, you will know this is all true because of how often They get free the instant you give them any slack They drop off the hook by themselves at the boat or on the beach You find the tear I am talking about with the hook just laying in it without the tip and barb being in anything. As we saw in the clip.
@adamimberti69483 ай бұрын
A swivel between the hook and the lure can help your catch rate. When a fish shakes its head it is essentially using the weight of the lure as a lever to throw the hook. A swivel will absorb most of the head shakes and makes it a lot harder for the fish to throw the hook.

Keep the videos coming, Roger, they're great! As others have said, I like to swap treble for an inline single hook plus an assist hook. Also when playing the fish I try to keep the rod tip low and at an angle, say 45 degrees either side of me rather than pointing straight towards the fish, hopefully reducing slack line when fish jumps. Having said this you're always going to lose plenty on lures, but it's great fun.

As other mentioned, use a front single or double assist hook. On less difficult fish I add a single. On more difficult two is best. The front hooks should also face point forward or its backwards and it won't hook fish as much. Length and size of the assist hook is important also, hook size should be 2-5mm larger than largest size area of the lure looking at the lure sideways. Length of the assist hook should be (length of lure from front to back) slightly less like. 5" less in length from the center of the lure.
@Sweetaccord3 ай бұрын
With the rear hook up, not down, you hook the head bones not jaw bones which are weaker. You did get lucky but when the hook is down like you have it, you will lose more fish. 😊

I was surf fishing once and saw the gulls dive bombing a school of bait fish a few hundred meters away directly in front of me. The school made its way closer and closer until it was within casting distance. Salmon were feeding and forcing the bait fish closer in. Man… that was HUGE fun. Pretty much a hookup with each cast. 3 or 4 were absolutely huge and I actually lost a massive one as it hit the shore break. I’ll never forget that session. 🎣🎣🎣🎣 Edit: Kilcunda beach, Victoria

Do a fair bit of spinning for salmon. Usually replace trebles with single hooks…not because of lost fish. Better fishermen then me reckon the you more likely to stay connected with single hooks but I can’t tell. But I just find trebles do more damage to fish mouth than singles. Also, I use a small ball bearing swivel with a snap…makes lure changes quicker. And if I get time, connect my leader with an FG knot,…no clunking through guides and will probably give you a bit more distance. Great way to fish.
@fishmut3 ай бұрын
To save on a leader why not just tie onto the main line and save all the hassle, I have a couple of reels with different pound lines and if I don’t want to use the line I have got I just change the reel over to a stronger line or use the lighter one , each to their own , just an idea for different fishing.

It amazes me that fish can jump, shake about and throw the hook. A while back, I got a hook in my hand. It got me in the meaty part, near my wrist. Opposite side to my thumb. I stopped for a moment and thought, before pull it out, I want to try to shake it out. I stood there on the beech for about 20 mins trying every thing I could to shake it out. I must have looked a sight to the people walking past. That hook did not budge. Eventually I gave up and just pulled it out. I have no idea how a fish can shake and throw a hook. By the way, I fish barbless hooks.
