25 and started my apprenticeship on july 15th. I left a laboring position making between 60k-70k a year.... but it was not a career. I bit the bullet and took a position that is less than half what I was making. All because I knew I need a career not a job. If anyone else is in the same boat, it's ok to start over and work your way back up again. Good luck to all those starting their career in the plumbing industry. I currently live alone with my dog but I know in the long run, that future house, future new vehicle, and future life will be worth it.

I’ve been thinking of getting in to plumbing union for a long time. I’m 46 now I believe I can do it but my with my age I’m not sure how the union would feel about that. I’m in Pennsylvania I know there is a local in Philadelphia and also one in Maryland.

same boat as you except a little older but left a labour job that paid around 60-65k/year and it took me many years of moving up the ladder to foreman position to earn that when it will take me only 3 years to make more than that in commercial plumbing. We'll see how it goes, I can always go back to university and get my bachelor's degree if it doesn't work out.

2 months later I’m now working on a construction site building dorms at a university. When I first started at the shop I had no idea what I would be in for on site, but I’ve completely adapted. My journeyman and I make such a great team, it’s gotten to the point I know what he wants to do before he even says anything. He doesn’t just use me as a mule, but he teaches me everything step by step. Scariest thing so far was hanging a 8’ stick of 10” cast iron pipe 30’ in the air on a swaying scissor lift lol. He moves pretty fast but has no problem when I have questions, or don’t understand right away, he actually likes how honest I am about where I’m at. I love it and can’t wait to see how much more skilled I will become in the future.

@@babyfaceajay98 I just got an apprenticeship (I haven't started it though). I'm not sure of all the reasons I chose it, but they'd probably include that I like the whole system of it; it almost reminds me of a labyrinth, with all sorts of connections and ends, and always certain pieces and features that can perplex me and I can learn about (old parts not used anymore, maybe). I’m a CDL driver, tired of the road and ready for something that I can use as an outlet for my creativity and I’ve always been fascinated by pipes and getting water from point A to point B. I’m great with my hands and I’m a master problem solver. I feel like I could really excel in an industry like Plumbing and I’m going for my apprenticeship next week. Up here in Oregon as well as many other places, there’s a high demand for labor since nobody wants to work, and a company here is offering apprenticeships starting at $20/h with ten steps, the final step ending at about $50/h. The way I see it, if you’re looking to get into a new trade, there couldn’t be a better time than now to start. I’m looking forward to exploring and absorbing the rest of your content. I also think it’s interesting that I found this specific video, while halfway across the country, when Austin, Texas is my home. Cheers

I’m a 5 year plumbing apprentice in Wisconsin. Wisconsin is a very large union state. All the industrial and commercial jobs are worked by union contractors. Don’t have to be in the union, but you’re much more limited to the work you do. Mostly residential construction and residential remodel jobs. It’s a great state to be a plumber in. I have noticed the pay in much higher in the upper Midwest state’s, the upper east coast states, and the two PNW states in Oregon and Washington, then the southern states and southwest states. I spend my first three years in the plumbing trade working in Denver and Phoenix. Most of the guys running jobs did not have a journeyman liscense. Some had been plumbing for 8 plus years also. The reason for the lesser pay, is the lack of requirements needed to become licensed. In those two states, their is no required schooling to be eligible to take at least you’re journeyman’s exam. All you have to do is have the state put you’re name and hours into the system to be tracked. Once you have the 5300 of hours worked in the field, you can take the exam, without anymore requirements. In Wisconsin you have to spend 5 years in a state certified apprenticeship, with all the required classroom hours, and the requirered field hours. You have to also pass all the required exams each semester with atleast a B average every semester. Therefore the pay is like 15-20 an hour more here In Wisconsin. So the credibility and the skill set of plumbers Varys quite a bit from state to state. Take that into consideration also. In honestly, as much as I loved phx and Denver living, I’m happy I’m getting my training and license her in wisco. If I want to move back someday, I can and I’ll be ahead of 90 percent of the workforce in that area of the country.
@jcosson10
@jcosson10 4 жыл бұрын
If you do live in the south or southwest, definitely work for a union shop. I didn’t work for union companies in az or co, so things might be better in that setting. With the insane amount of residential and commercial devoloment, caused from the constant overwhelming population growths in those states, there are way more non union states. I found that those states had way to much work, with not even close to the needed labor force. There is a high likelihood you will be doing aspects of the job, that are way over you’re head, and have never done before. Plumbers are in very short stock, so it’s incredibly easy to find a job, but you will be working with plenty of non credible, and bad plumbers with no pride in their work. Tons and tons of latino workers on jobs that are here on work visas, coming straight from Mexico, or south/central America. Plenty of chaos and unsafe work environments. I’ve seen quite a few reckless injury’s and even a fatality on a job. It’s a different world up here in Wisconsin.

First Roger's video I agree with. Very true. Would like to add: Plumbing is not exactly a socially-acceptable job. You will be in situations where you would rather not be introduced as a plumber. Positive side of plumbing is - once you get on your own, you will make very good money, And no matter what people say - yes - life is all about money. Good luck !

Going in on Monday to interview for an apprenticeship. Before moving states recently, I was a journeyman HVAC installer and worked in the industry for 4 years. Appreciate the tips, albeit they were right in line with what made me successful in my previous trade(s). The ability to assess need is bar none one of the best attributes a helper can have, aside from being hard working and ambitious. I moved up from a 2nd apprentice to 1st apprentice in HVAC after 1 month based on those characteristics. They said I pretty much broke a record as far as that goes but just trying to reiterate the importance of your tips. Time to deflate this seemingly big head and start at the bottom and work my way up again! It will be fun getting down and dirty again.

I don't know how other auto techs feel, but for me... it was fun at first and now its just work. Work that pays terribly. I'm an apprentice in a union making 22 an hour. While a friend is an apprentice electrician making double... and a couple of my old college classmates are making the same as me. Some make a bit more.. but its very few it seems.
