Roghudi is an old Greko town that was abandoned in 1973 due to heavy flooding. Roghudi was a continuously inhabited Greko town for about a thousand years, about 50 minutes inland in Calabria, sitting on a small mountain in a valley by a river.
A lone wood cutter and I believe a monk were the only inhabitants by the end of the century and have long since passed away.
On my visit with the president of To Ddomadi Greko, we met a Greko elder and her grandson who were visiting the town and Calabria.
Most inhabitants were re-settled in New Roghudi near the coast, but just ten percent speak Greko there these days, Melito and Bova Marina.
Some the dwellings are being restored and I call upon Greek philanthropists to take an interest in the town to restore some of the dwellings as has happened in Pendedaktilo. Roghudi is picturesque and historic and in my opinion, a hotel, restaurant, bar and local produce/manufacturing could work to restore the town. I would throw in a Greko cultural centre
Italy, Calabria and Greko towns are worth visiting if you need to travel anywhere and the calabrians are simply wonderful and cultured people
