Many people assume this is a standard love song, but it is more likely that "she" is Freedom. Freedom is as sweet as Tupelo Honey. The reference to "men in granite" may refer to the statues of American Revolutionary heroes: "You can't stop us on the road to freedom You can't keep us 'cause our eyes can see Men with insight, men in granite Knights in armor bent on chivalry Morrison is an Irishman that grew up during "The Troubles" in Ireland, and was appreciative of the American Dream and its cultural aspirations.
@interabang
@interabang 3 жыл бұрын
That's all supposition I'm afraid, you can literally transpose the lyrics onto any meaning. Until he explains what it means it's irrelevant. Van probably wouldn't refer to himself has Irish BTW, he's a protestant from the north of Ireland, he accepted a knighthood from the Queen, something an Irishman would be very unlikely to do.
@Dusty999
@Dusty999 3 жыл бұрын
"She'' could also refer to the Statue of Liberty. "Men in granite" could be Mt Rushmore. Dumping tea in the ocean could be the Boston Tea Party.

@@interabang Lots of Irish people have accepted knighthoods. And lots of Irish people are Protestant. Van has always remained apolitical with regards Northern Ireland. He’s made music with the likes of the Chieftains and he lived in Dublin for years. And was married to a Dubliner. I don’t know what he considers himself apart from a Belfast man because he doesn’t discuss it and people can be many things at once.

There's a scene in "Friends" where they're discussing the most romantic song, Ross' pick is 'Tupelo Honey'. Van is a spiritual guy and often a romantic one, he's written some gorgeous love songs such as 'Someone Like You', 'Have I Told You Lately', 'Crazy Love', 'The Way Young Lovers Do', 'Warm Love' and 'Into the Mystic' among others. My favorite album of his is "No Guru, No Method, No Teacher" from 1987. Everyone has their favorite, "Astral Weeks" gets a lot of love but that's an earlier one.

Just discovered this song and really enjoyed listening to it with you. You're right when you said there are so many notes in this songs. I mean, the playing on this song is just astounding: the sax and duelling guitars in the instrumental break, the whole band coming in for the third chorus, the 'lay me down' section, she's all right with me and the epic final chorus with the band coming in with the drums, not to mention Van's vocals, of course. A perfect musical blend. I'm listening to it time and time again and it is just genius.

I love the drums on this song. Nothing crazy, but the dynamics are just so expressive and really help drive the song home for me. They're played by Connie Kay who was the drummer for the Modern Jazz Quartet and played with a bunch of top jazz players like Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Chet Baker etc.

The recommendations have been spot on. From Into the Mystic, Moondance, and as Andrew mentioned, Sweet Thing and Astral Weeks, plus the others. I have looked all over the net for a music reaction to Sweet Thing but only found several musicians and small orchestras playing it. Please, be the first. Sweet Thing will be your number one played song on that Love compilation you are making. It was Van's 2nd studio album. He was 23 years old, and it was 1968. Astral Weeks (the album) would become, arguably, the very core of his next 4 albums, and his overall sound. He has tried many genres, with over 42 studio albums, multiple compilations, duets and soundtrack appearances. I was 24 when a friend forced me to listen to it. I'd heard Them many times but knew only Van's name. My friend told me to listen to the album as much as I could; that it would grow on me more and more with each listen. We were post-punk, alternative guys back then, and I thought he was crazy after my first listen, but I'm open-minded, and I listened to it again, and again...that was 37 years ago. I'll never stop. I worked in the music business for 35 years, heard thousands and thousands of albums and songs (and I'd been buying music since I was 11, and still do, and always will). I don't personally believe in having a #1 song or album for myself, but I do have favorites. My go-to albums are from Marvin Gaye's - What's Going On, to Nick Drake's albums (any of his amazing 3, as he died at 26), and Van's - Astral Weeks. There's another 1000 here, but these are top for me. And I still listen to/and buy new music but my roots are in bands/Artists like The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, Roland Kirk, The Replacements, Hüsker Dü, Nina Simone, Townes Van Zandt, Hank Williams Sr. and Hank 111 (no Jr. Ever), Bob Dylan, Charlie Parker, Neil Young, Public Enemy, John Coltrane, The Beastie Boys, Dinosaur Jr, Frank Zappa, Frank Sinatra...enough,; I'm sorry. I haven't even scratched the surface. Anyway, my friend forcing the Album, Asral Weeks, on me was one of the best things anybody ever did for me. I wouldnt/couldn't force you to listen but hopefully intrigued you enough to at least try Sweet Thing!

Crazy love by Van Morrison or Marc Cohn with Jackson Brown’s version of it. Into The Mystic is majestic. But if you want to hear strings that will break your heart listen to the trilogy of songs on Into The Music starting with And The Healing Has Begun/It’s All In The Game/You Know What They Are Writing About. Three songs that flow together seamlessly and quite literally define the joy and heartbreak of love. Bring your hankies and be prepared for a helping of musicality that would warm the dead.

Awe maaaaannnn, just about lost it from your intro. My buddy has a couple of days remaining on this earth (eff-u cancer), and the pain his wife is going through is so visceral, that he just wants her to not suffer. OMG. Yesterday, we had a video conference with him and all his coworkers, so he could say goodbye because they too are his family. It was so sweet, so classy, and so him. I'll dedicate this to Becky and Jose! 😭

@@deborahbryan3639 Thank you. He passed this afternoon 30 min before I was going to stop by with a few other friends. He was surrounded by his wife and two daughters and no longer in pain. I don't hate many things, if any at all, but my hatred/disdain for cancer is excessive. Take care and be safe out there. ❤💔

Great reaction and commentary! That story about young innocent love, snatched away before it could fully bloom was beautiful and tragic. As for Van Morrison, I've been in a 30 year rabbit hole with his extensive discography. He's one of the most prominent and prolific songwriters of the 20th century. TUPELO HONEY was the request, but YOU'RE MY WOMAN off the same album is the real gem. Van has a quite an extensive collection of lovesongs that are worth checking out; thanks for sharing this one. 👏

I agree with you this is probably the most romantic love song ever written. I think that Van's voice makes it so. His voice is without a doubt the most expressive singer of his generation, it has so much feeling and soul. His musical arrangement is also fantastic. Been listening to it since it first came out and it still moves me. Many more great songs from Van to react to from "Into The Mystic", "Wild Night", and "Hymns to the Silence".

I am so happy your enjoying the great Van Morrison, he has a way of writing that is from the heart to every heart who listens to his songs, I have loved his music for a very long time and have all his albums, there is nothing like sitting on my deck looking at the ocean and having him take me to another place and time. One of my all time favourites of his is "Across The Bridge Where Angels Dwell" it is a rare song that is hardly ever played but it is filled with such beauty that it deserves you to show it to your sub's and the world your obviously a passionate person and you will love it. It’s emotional seeing you getting so emotional. It’s both this gut wrenching feeling of sadness and happiness at the same time listening to this song. Thank you for making my day better with this reaction.

You can spend a whole day doing nothing but listening to Van Morrison,and it will be one of the best days of your life. Having said that,my suggestion is you give a listen to him singing "Crazy Love" after this one.

van was my greatest find as a young man. I eventually got the funds to buy front row tickets at liverpool to see him , my car engine blew on the way there. I was devistated. I then got a gift to see him at Bridgewater Hall. You can only imagine how i felt sitting down in anticipation. On stage he was rude,dismissive and rushed through the set like he couldnt be arsed. im now 54 yo and still hurt.
