Rohloff hub lacing pattern(s) discussed

Rohloff recommends 2 cross lacing for the reason you stated, ie., the spokes' angle of entry to the rim is too extreme with 3 cross build causing breakages at the nipple. I have first hand experience of this with 700c 36 spoke model which I bought second hand . I rebuilt the wheel myself to correct Rohloff specification using French drilled ML21 rim with double eyelets and brass polyax nipples for straightest entry. I also added Rohloff flange rings as recommended for a new build on an old hub. Drive spokes fitted up the inside edge of the flange on both sides gives a stronger wheel under extreme load conditions, eg 100kg rider standing on pedals in bottom gear. My spokes have remained tight, and the wheel is still true after 12 months using this method. No breakages either. Good video tho.

Great video, I wish it was up years ago. But it’s great to see that I have the correct lacing. I’d like to upgrade my speed hub with the external gear mech, By any chance could you do a video about it. Even Rohloff is not uploading any video in 7/8 years. Thanks man Great channel

If the frame has no rear derailleur hanger, one could mount a derailleur with its own hook for mounting. Those are built for up to 9-speed drivetrains as far as I know. Of course, you'd also need a rear hub with a cassette or a freewheel mount, a shifter, and cassette/freewheel. The derailleur type I mean: bike.bikegremlin.com/230/rear-derailleur/#2.1 Relja

Wow! I did not expect to see a Rholoff on this channel. I am not even sure if I have ever seen one in real life. Cool video. Real bike mechanic problems.... not those ''how to lube the chain'' on others.

it is good recommendation to lace on 2 crosses, because of big hub it acts as 3 crosses, it could be laced on 3 crosses but gain would be marginal, but you laced right side of wheel on wrong side it should be laced as left side, that driving/torque spokes are inside of hub-less bent

That doesn't make any measurable difference in practice. A moot point in my opinion & experience. Your experience and choices may differ.

@@BikeGremlinUS this point is difficult and as you say, should really be for the builder to determine. However, Rohloff now say they will not warranty flange failures where drive (pulling) spokes are aligned to outer flange-face due to the pressure this applies to the flange under torque (drive load). Not helped by their literature referring to one method yet showing the opposite! 🙄 I laced one as you did last week and caught my mistake just before starting to bring the tension up. Be nice if Rohloff could at least give clearer guidance in their tech literature

​@@TheSilversurfmonkey Fewer crosses put more stress on the hub's flanges (the less tangential the spokes, the more they are trying to pull the flanges off). Fortunately, in Serbia, one can not get a warranty replacement as there is no representative, so no worries about that. :) The hub had already been laced with the same pattern, and I know that lacing it the other way round creates extra stress points. I did want to risk with a 3x lacing though, but that was not approved. :) I would love to see/hear an explanation of how the pressure from outbound trailing spokes is more harmful for the flanges than the pressure from them being inbound. Looked for it on the Rohloff's website. It seems thay have made a bad translation to English. LOL. :) The pictures and German documents show the pattern as I did it in the video - and as it was on this hub originally. Though, again, I don't think that really matters. Either way, the wheel is holding up pretty well for now, with a strong, heavy rider. Maybe 2x is good enough for these hubs. Though I'm still curious to try it with a 3x pattern. :) Relja

Does Rohloff have an oil leak problem? Put the bike on its side and oil leaks out?

I have had this problem when the Rohloff wheel was laid on it's side (i.e. when bicycle is loaded sideways into a car). Apart from the oil leaking out, this is not a problem for the hub (short term) as it can still be ridden without an oil bath. Rohloff has said the recommended oil refill (25ml) is for lubrication and to dampen the gear noise. Even when most of the oil leaks out, there is still enough oil to lubricate the gears without damage.
