I was in the middle of a tour with derailleur setup. I downshifted and the chain popped of. That was it. I ordered a Rohloff, built the wheel and installed the shifter in a hostel. That was several tours ago, and about 75,000 miles. It's still going strong!

Just say "roll-off" - German was my first language and that's the best approximation in English. Apart from all that, I love the Rohloff concept and the only compaint i've ever heard about it (apart from price) is that the single sprocket wears quite fast in sandy conditions. Great piece of kit overall.

Given how low-maintenence the hub is, it would be great if the drive train was too. That's why I am interested in chain in chaincase or belt drive for one. I would be interested to hear how the belt drives cope with sand

I change chains and flip or replace the Rohloff gear every 6 months averaging between 6 and 7 thousand miles a year. It take about 10 minutes on the side of the trail. With over 37K miles on the bike in all weather conditions, it's WAY better than an open gear cluster. @tonyd.34303 жыл бұрын
01:00 noticeably heavier? A normal rear hub is ~ 370g + ~330g for a 12 speed derrailieuer + ~ 600 g for a 12s cassette. Summes up in 1300g without the shifting units. A Rohloff w.o. the shifting units is ~1600g. Both systems result in ~ 110g /speed btw. 300g are not a game changer to me!

If I could get one thing through to Rohloff, it would be to make sure that you have an oil bottle design that won't be so easy to spill your $5000/L magic lube on the ground whilst extracting it into the syringe. Or specify cheaper, more available, oils as an alternative.
@TheMNBlackBear3 жыл бұрын
I've got the Shimano Alfine 8spd and I love it. But the Rohloff would obviously be better. The only thing I don't like about gear hubs is the drag. Barring that however--it's gear hubs over derailleurs any day of the week.
@simongee89283 жыл бұрын
You say the Rohloff is heavier, but it's claimed to be no heavier than a derailleur drive train. Only problem is that the Rohloff hub puts all the weight on the rear axle.
@WarthogARJ6 жыл бұрын
Very nice. But so how does this sort of adventurous spirit first into Rohloff's newest policy about refusing to sell seals? If your hub starts to leak oil, you cannot fix it yourself, you have to sends the entire wheel back to a "Rohloff Service Centre". So how does THAT work if you are somewhere remote??? You can buy the special tool to do it: still can, lots of people still selling it. But no seals. I've just had the UK distributer refuse to sell me any seals. They say I must send the entire wheel to them. And it's no9t under warranty: is entirely at my risk if I want to do it. I really don't like that.
@brianbassett43796 жыл бұрын
Odd, the shop I have service mine buys the seals by the dozen and is happy to provide them to anyone willing to experiment on their own Speed-hub, they don't recommend it but they will do it. As far as seals breaking down... I have put over 5000 miles on mine and it looked pristine when disassembled. When properly serviced and not damaged physically they provide worry free operation.

Just so you know the BaFang 750w motor work so well with the BaFang that they seem to be built for each other. Why do you choose to carry "anything" on your back (even a drone) rather than pulling a trailer? Dynamo hub in front? Have you learned yet that trying to document everything for a vid can make it all seem like work? Can drain the fun and spontaneity out of the ride? Rohloffs are never supposed to be laid down because of the oil leakage possibility. It can do more than show up as a light coating.

I can pedal just as far as any ebiker, just a few kph slower. You'd have no hope of keeping it charged in remote Australia anyway. Achieving massive distances under own power is a lot more satisfying too. An ebike on long stretches of road is noisy, boring and pointless.
