How to Sew a Gather by Hand | Simple Fabric Gathering Tutorial | For Sewing Beginners

This quick hand sewing lesson will show you how to use running stitch to quickly add a 'gather' in a piece of fabric.
Gathering adds ruffles or pleats to fabric, so can be used for all sorts of projects and embellishments such as flared skirts and hair bows.

Tie a knot at one end of the piece of thread, and feed the other end of this piece of thread through the eye of a needle :) Hope that helps!

You didn't mention the folded edge. Is that important?

No it's not important, that's just to make the edge neater. You may or may not do a gather on a hemmed edge, either works :)

Thank you for the tutorial. What if I want to sew the gathered piece to another non-gathered piece? Example: a pajama bodice with a yoke connecting to a ruffled piece. Does it require a special stitch type?

Hi! To join gathered fabric to a flat fabric, you would first make sure the gathered fabric is the width/length you want and that the gathers are even. Then you'd pin this fabric to the flat fabric, right sides together, and sew them together between the 2 lines of running stitch. You can do this on a machine, or with a backstitch if you're hand sewing. Then you can remove one or both of the lines of running stitch :)

Hi! You may find this page helpful: www.craftsy.com/post/how-to-gather-fabric/ You basically just sew in between the 2 lines of stitching you did to make the gather, either using a sewing machine or by doing backstitch by hand :) Pin first though.

Could be tricky if the tulle isn't fine enough, you might need to make longer stitches. It should work though :D
