Aang telling Toph to just ditch her parents is a little detail that actually makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Remember, Air Nomads aren't raised by parents, they never know their parents. Instead they're raised by the adult Nomads around them, and even then they are always free to go wherever they want in the world. That's why Aang had friends in every nation, was familiar with Air Temples in every part of the world, and knew about fun regional activities like penguin sledding and elephant koi surfing. Anytime he got bored he could just hop on Appa and go somewhere else. To him the idea of staying in one place because of two adults that you don't seem to like probably seems insane.

I think Danny really nailed it when he talked about Toph's blindness. One thing I can't stand is when a blind character can "see" because of some kind of magic or power. So the fact that Toph can feel/sense the world around her in order to "see" how things/people move is really creative. I also like how she's not completely op when up against someone who can fly or someone who isn't an earth bender. It makes her feel realistic (or, as realistic as a fantasy show can get).
@JWJWJWJW Жыл бұрын
I think the other cool thing about her, too, if they show in multiple instances throughout the show how her blindness does affect her not just in her emotional feelings, but also in the sense of putting her in multiple situations where she is truly blind, because she can’t earth bend. It’s a really really well done and grounded way of having a disabled character still be very competent, but also have their disability still be an important part of their functionality as a person like you said, and like Danny says a lot of times we see these ““ disable characters and shows, but they’re not because hoops they have super powers, so it doesn’t matter.

I also like that her earth sensing isn't actually vision or vision-like either, she doesn't "see" auras or sound or whatever. It's just felt through touch, and she doesn't even turn her head to "look". I just like that the sensing power she has isn't a sight replacement per say, it's something different with it's own pros and cons

I think the best me most under appreciated part of Tophs vision is she can feel people’s emotions if she is focused and well… it’s kinda heart breaking at one point during a fire nation fight in the sky because it’s Toph and Soka in the air with Toph only able to see Soka due to him holding her hand as she is dangling in the air and he says something to calm her down but NA she can feel he is afraid meaning to her the world is dark and the only thing she can feel is the wind hitting her and Soka afraid but trying to save her and himself from the Fire nation

To be fair about Aang's whole "Why don't you just leave?" remark, he probably still doesn't have a great understanding of parent/child relationships. Air Nomads don't live with their parents, and most of the people Aang's met have parents that are either absent or dead. It's why I stand by him accidentally becoming a neglectful parent. He just doesn't get the importance of that dynamic entirely, and the Gaang probably doesn't call him out on it because he isn't explicitly a bad parent (and also NONE of them have proper examples of Good Parenting to compare to besides Iroh and maybe Hakoda).
@chronosclaimsall Жыл бұрын
I also just saw it as him speaking from experience, because he did the exact same thing. Life at the air temple was starting to make him unhappy, and as soon as he heard the head monks were planning to make it even worse (albeit they were planning to send him away anyways) he decided to run away. And things technically worked out "fine" for him, so why wouldn't they for her? It's very naive thinking and makes perfect sense for a 12 year old too.

Aang being like "Why stay here where you're not happy?" makes sense in a way, because he was raised to be a nomad by monks, and he didn't have the traditional parents a lot of people have. He was raised to someday leave the temple and travel from place to place, would make sense he might not fully comprehend why it might be so hard for people to leave where they are.

I think the point of Kyoshi showing up was to introduce a level of moral ambiguity to the Avatar. We've only really ever known Aang who was raised as a pacifist who values all life. Realising that this is literally just an Air Nomad belief (and Aang's personal decision) as opposed to a legit aspect of the Avatar role is interesting. It essentially tells the audience that at some point Aang will have to grapple with the prospect of murder.

This show also does a REALLY good job highlighting how Toph is blind and how it impacts her life. Yes, her tremor sense lets her map her surroundings, but only through what is touching the ground and only in a rough outline of the object. She "sees" so well that the people around her keep forgetting that she is blind until they ask her about something like colors or ask her to do something that her sight can't help her with like hitting something in the air or reading something. This really isn't to far off from how some people that were born blind operate in real life. 4:36 Actually it’s kinda funny how so many people know what Ang looks like, enough to make a statue of him. And they didn’t just use someone already known like Yang Chen. Considering that most people think that Ang’s avatar is dead. 9:55 Loved this bit. Kind of wild Ang is so worried about what people think of him. When he’s supposed to save the entire world, yet playmates to one village full of fanatics to a warmongering conquer. 11:42 Some may find it strange that Ang found his sass despite him being so altruistic. But personally I love it. Firstly. These people are basically a much less successful fire nation. There’s no difference between what the fire nation did starting with Sosen. And what Chin was trying to do. Add in that there blaming all there faults on the Avatar, making them so petty. And that just makes them worse. Secondly. Given how slanted and unbelievably biased they’ve been with this Kangaroo court, I wouldn’t put it past them for one second after Ang saves them to be. “Oh avatar, thank you for saving us…. Well into the boiling oil you go!” 14:37 Really helps that The Bolder is voiced by WWE legend Mick Foley. 17:17 Kind of can’t help but wonder how Toph would be able to fight against a fire bender that uses the ability that basically allows them to fly by using fire jets on your hands and feet. If she’d still be able to detect them somehow, or if she’s be completely blind like when ang uses his airbending. 15:57 And there she is! One of, if not, the best character of the series! Honestly at the end of this episode I don’t know which is wilder. The fact that Toph’s relationship with team Avatar starts with her blatantly lying to them about her Father’s sudden change of heart. Or the fact that out of all the people her rich and influential father could have chosen to go after his daughter. He chooses said taekwondo instructor, and the man who literally just tried to abduct and ransoms her!

Honestly, the part where Aang suggests Toph just leaves is actually very interesting because it subtly showcases the difference in culture. The air nomads were nomads, Aang constantly talks about how he travelled the world all the time despite being so young. Everyone close to Aang's age that he knows was either perfectly happy in their home like Bumi or are actively travelling like Katara, Sokka, and even Zuko. Of course, Aang's knee-jerk reaction to hearing someone close to his age is unhappy with their current residence would be asking why they don't just leave. This is also a great metaphor/foreshadowing of Aang's inability to do earthbending because of his airbender mindset. Air is free and constantly in motion, while earth is heavy and stuck in place unless something else actively moves it.
@SplitSniper7 Жыл бұрын
When you mentioned the limits of Tophs abilities and used fire bending as an example it's important to note that Uncle Iroh mentioned how fire benders use their abilities. It's not just a static movement, also, her being able to see the tree that isn't moving, kind of deflates the argument a bit. An d I love the little detail of her pointing out the ants that she can see but Aang couldn't find them.
@chronosclaimsall Жыл бұрын
Yeah that made me feel like he didn't fully understand what her ability is. She reads vibrations, so even if a thing isn't moving on it's own she can send out her own vibrations by stomping and just read what those vibrations travel through. Not to mention that every bending style has it's own stances and forms that usually need to be moved through to channel the bending in battle, so while she wouldn't see the actual attack she could still feel their bodies twisting/moving in her direction (with the exception of people approaching through flight of course, but then she could potentially be able to hear them) and at least know to throw up a shield of rock or something

Danny does his hair like a praying mantis. Toph's fighting style is Southern Praying Mantis. I see what you did there.

21:18 just reminded me that there are overlaps in bending like for earth and air there's sand and dust bending, water and air is cold breeze, fire and water is steam, fire and air is smoke. fire and earth is lava, then water and earth is mud

I quite literally had to take a second to listen really hard when you were dubbing a joke over Sokka because it's been maybe a decade and a half (goddamn I feel old saying that) since I last watched AtLA and you did a BANG UP IMPRESSION.

17:40 OK but can we talk about how much of a genius toff is I mean she is able to fight like several master benders without seeing the element fly at her and still be able to block and attack back meaning she has had to have memorized almost all of the bending moves and have such a reaction time that she is able to calculate where and what the bending will do/land and how to counter or block and then find a opening and attack all in like seconds if not less

hair looks good, keep up good work sir. Toph approves of the praying mantis hair 👍

You know what I love? That Danny says the thing that when blind characters appear they have like sonar vision, and then I remembered the Ember Island Players and freaking Toph’s character freaking screams at people and they’re like: there I got a pretty good look at you! 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Toph: my dad said I was free to travel the world Sokka: no he didn't... Let's go before he realizes you're gone

Sokka really isn't the weakest link of the team, I'd argue that after Aang, he is the most essential member of the team (his biggest achievement ofcourse was finding out about the eclipse (not bad for someone the librarian called 'not very bright'), making a plan and almost taking out the fire nation, which did fail). And Taking out SSB man, someone who is in my opinion, the most dangerous bender in the last airbender (Hama is too situational). Only overtaken by P'li, Tarlok, Amon and Yakone. His first encounter with the gang shows what makes him so dangerous... stealth. A combustion bender outranges any counterpart and is capable of instantly killing an entire group that doesn't notice him with a single blow.

I just realized, besides the episode where Sokka goes fishing, the only other episode that actually shows the Gaang making money is the episode where Toph is using her earth ending to scam people. Where tf do they get their money?

I believe fire nation man was a reference to Nikolai Volkoff, a famous wrestler from the 70s and 80s. His bit was that he was super loyal to russia (ussr) and sang the anthem, which is similar to the fire nation "anthem". He was played up to be a villain to add to the drama of the show. Thats why fire nation man has a russian anthem and is booed at. I'm surprised I haven’t seen any other comments about this.

I love that there are several "This is such a good bit" jokes with no mention of Aang willingly wearing the stockade and just stepping out of it whenever he pleases.

I love how Aang when talking to Toph was just like "you arent happy at home, why not just leave?" like it perfectly illustrates Air Nomad mentality. Dont like something? Leave. Dont wanna fight? Leave. Dont want to become the ultimate warrior and be ripped from your mentor? Leave. Meanwhile, Toph, the unmoving earthbender, doesn't uproot her relationship with her parents or her life until they *really* let her down.

Fun fact; Mick Foley does the voice of the Boulder. Dwayne "Rock" Johnson was stopped to do it but backed out. Mick Foley did the voice doing a Rock impression.

No joke when he did the sokka voice-over. I totally thought he sounded like zuko. And then, when he did the zuko voice over, it blew my mind.😂
