Today i am meeting up with the Roland JU-06, modeled on possibly the most iconic sounding superstar synthesizers from the 1980's - the Juno-106, and damn the new Boutique really keeps that legacy intact.
Ok, so a couple of things.. the output is really HOT on this one too, i though i had it tuned in to sweetspot but man at some low notes I still managed to overdrive my mixer, it really packs a punch. Also, i dont really do demos, so this is technically just me noodling about on the JU06 with no planning.. just trying it out with different sounds. I remembered to use the chorus on the JU06, which i totally missed on the JX03, so for those of you out there interested how that sounds should get their kicks.
Also, the sliders are really good..possibly the best of the three to edit in terms of feel, i forgot how small foot print the synth had at times.. it is really not a big deal at all with the JU06. (do note i have massive fat fingers) :)
There are NO external FX in the beginning. Just the JU06 chorus. (not the delay) At the end of the session, after 20.40 i add some vanilla reverb and delay with the MS70 to finish with some more depth and air.
I really hope this video as the JX03 one is helpful and informational, even though i dont say anything... i always let the synths do the talking.

I have a Juno 106. This sounds pretty much exactly like a Juno 106. I'm sure you'd notice differences at times but if a person didn't want to shell out $1000 for a 30 year old instrument, they could get this and have close to the same experience. Though the 4-voice limitation is a factor, for $600 you could have an 8-voice Juno. I'm going to do a "noodle" this Saturday on my JP08 and post it. These units are simply awesome

The best boutique they made... I owned 4x 106's and this is pretty much a bite-size version. Feels and sounds like the real thing. Should've bought 2 when they were on blowout.

Wow, that chorus makes this thing HUGE. I bought a JP but this video has me thinking that decision haha. I seriously can't get over how good this thing sounds, due in no small part to how well it's played! Fantastic!

Sunny D - trolling in every Boutique video on KZbin. These sound great and with little bit processing/filtering they sound spot on. So yeah, I'm getting all of these. And for the asking prices of Juno-106's... well the sellers can keep them. :)

I really like the sounds you get out of this box, especially the non typical ones without chorus, so beautiful! Most play the juno with chorus, but also without that character FX it has also a beautiful signature. The Ju-06 reminds me of a bit my Juno60 but less wild and it has the typical character of the Juno series, and I guess the best of the three to tweak because of the faders.

+VolcaRock thanks a lot man! :) yeah def the simplest one to edit given the longer slider travel.. i found it a breeze editing during performance and also sound noodling. Possibly the simplest of the three aswell.. :)

Yes, i guess its also with the originals, the juno is the simplest of them, and I love its sound, this is for me the typical Roland fatness. especially with the Tubbutec Juno 66 mod. which adds portamento and detune and even auto-detune of the 6 DCOs

I have to laugh a bit at myself. Your video came up on autoplay, as I was listening to some synth demo's, and it caught my ear. So I opened the window in which your video was playing, and it was an overhead shot. I'm sitting here racking my brain, trying to figure out why it looked like a Roland and a Nord physically slammed together in the most curious of ways. I read your description (Roland this, Roland that... cool cool), and every time I looked up it was the overhead view again, never noticing for a good solid 10 minutes, that it was a Roland Module sitting on top a Nord Keyboard... This entire time I'm thinking "Why did Roland make a keyboard that has 32 keys slightly overlapped with a black module?!? It looks so odd!" Great video, and beautiful timbres BTW... I'm going back to sleep now...

Best demo of this on the tube. I've been wondering if the sample rate of 44,100 would be a problem but evidently not. Very soulful sounds! I am sure some purists will find some stuff to pick at. I was like this in the early days of analogue emulation but this is great for the price. Octave One have one of these in their live rig at the moment.

Nothing would sell me more on the JU-06 than what you just did here. I wish I could play that well. But at any rate, just kicking back with headphones to your understated "noodle" here is such a soothing experience.

Neat. It's just amazing that you can get this for about the price of many VST's out there. The lights are kind of cool, and I like that you can just put it on the keyboard like that. I wonder if it has rubber feet on the bottom. I think I have an idea of how this could be used in conjunction with recording in a daw, but not sure if it would work or be the best way, or just too much trouble.

Yep. Some classic Juno 106 sounds there. I've owned two of those in the past. This sounds the same.

+John Saunders oh yes, it is so close.. i could not actually tell the difference. an A/B comparison would probably be needed, however since every 106 sounds slightly different it becomes a matter of individual perception imho. I am more than happy with how this recreates the 106's sonical capabilities .. :)

Great stuff! Are you recording the synth via the USB or via an output. If you are using the output, are you splitting the signal into stereo? I have the JU06 and am wondering which way of recording will yield the best sound.

I may sell my 106 and get this. Get it out before the voice chips die. This emulation is certainly close enough. I just wish for the two other voices. That kills me.

+xXDjOdysseyXx DJODDYSSEY From my understanding, is that when the unit is in poly chain mode the unit will send out the fifth note via MIDI, so technically you could have another device receiving that note. However, it being a different device with a completely different sound character it would not serve the purpose of poly chaining. Note, when having for example 2 units of the same in 8 voice mode, you would have to program dump the sounds to get exact copies on the second device.. and when editing, you would also have to edit both. One disclaimer here, this is only what i have read in manuals and on roland website, i do not have 2 units of the same model to test with so cannot confirm.

Here's a beginner question. I want to buy a microkorg and this. Could I use the midi out into the ju-06, while still getting a signal from the microkorg? or would the midi out cut the line out from the microkorg? silly question i know, but im very new to all of this

+Krister Kjørholt the microkorg is cool and a lot of people use it. the only slightly annoying thing is that dialing in tone isn't as intuitive as these seem to be (you have to turn the big knobs on the microkorg to the setting you want to change and then change that function) although the microkorg has a pretty good arpreggiator and has effects (flanger, chorus, phaser, delay). i guess if you were a good keyboardist (unlike myself) you could probably get away without the appregiator

+peaches en regalia i think you can, but when in chain mode the fifth note will just be sent out via midi.. so you will not get a true representation of the sounds in the main synth. So iirc for full 8 voice you need two identical models. cheers

+Exelitious The JD-Xi is also excellent, two digital synths, analog synth, and a drum machine. Onboard sequencer, incredibly in-depth customization (admittedly tiny lcd screen is a pain, but there are software editors), good sounds, fun filters, and ridiculously easy to just jam on or get inspiration from. Can be had for $400 used if oyu look around!
