Very true warning about "going to bed with" those. I keep my JP-08 by the bed, and I've joyfully lost many hours of sleep trying to recreate Jupiter 8 sounds--it will actually do some of them very well! It's always a nice end to a day. 👍

If you've watched all Tom's videos, it should not be all that surprising (in spite of all the "hate" these units get on synth forums for being VST boxes) that he likes them. Considering he's said many many times that even though he has the real analog synths, he likes to sample them then mangle/massage the sounds in sample form. Thus he's obviously not an Analog purest/zealot. It's amazing what you can produce when you just focus on the sound and leave all the baggage behind. :)

Hello Sir :) Thank you so much for such brilliant & informative videos you do. Sir i have question for you... YOU HAVE A HUGE COLLECTION OF GEAR & SOUNDS SO HOW DO YOU CHOOSE A CORRECT SOUND WHICH IS REQUIRED FOR A PARTICULAR SCORE OR A SCENE IN A MOVIE ?? & MOST IMPORTANTLY HOW DO YOU REMEMBER YOUR SOUNDS ?? I'll be highly obliged if you help us out by answering our question.. Thank you so much once again & GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS :) :)

Great question! How do you start to define the colours and tone of a scene?
@SerratedSkies
@SerratedSkies 7 жыл бұрын
As a fellow soundtrack composer I can maybe answer: Tom has more than likely played with all his synths to the point where he knows exactly what they all sound like and what they're capable of. When scoring a film, after you've been doing it for a while you can kind of look at a scene and think "Alright, based on this type of movie and/or the music style I've already been using, what would make sense here? Is that too generic? What's an unusual alternative that still works? These synths come to mind and I'll put down my current idea, but maybe I should go play around with some really different sounds to see if they fit." And sometimes you're looking at a scene without music and you can just *hear* the score in your head. Just keep practicing and you'll get better!

You dont need a lot. You can do almost anything using softsynths alone and just a couple of hardware low end to midrange synths combined with software gets you a far more powerful setup than the pro studios of a decade or two ago.

Tom, get a Dinsync RE-303 instead of TB-303. It is a DIY 100% replica of the TB-303. I'm sure you won't have any problem finding someone to build you one. The internals are completely identical to the original so you can even put the Devilfish mod in it. You can put the original 303 CPU in it, but there is a custom CPU available that is a clone of the original software but also includes extra features + MIDI. And best thing, you can get one built for a little more than $1k. It is like having a brand new TB-303.
@st0rmchild
@st0rmchild 4 жыл бұрын
Yep. The RE-303 is the only real replica. The rest of the clones (even the analog ones) are not in the same league. The TB-03 is actually pretty good though. It’s not a perfect emulation but in most cases it sounds close enough.

I'm curious to know what differences exist between the sound engines of the TB03 & TR09 vs. the one I use in the JD-Xi. It has the sounds of the TB303, TR909, and even the VP330, but it's not the same I'm sure and I wonder what circuit elements have been retained and what else has been replicated purely by software. Great video. I will need to consider getting the TB03.

not sure if it's because of the lack of eventide reverb ;-) , but I'm a little underwhelmed with the sound of these. Fun to have I'm sure for the quick hands on action and I get the simplicity charm, but these don't trigger GAS..for now, mm perhaps that tb-03 though? :) . Fun lill jam at the end.
