Harley Benton all the way for me... I can't hear much of a difference in the sound, certainly not any that would sway me either way when out busking. The HB just seems a more modern device, with the bluetooth and the recharging etc. The Boss is so rugged that's clearly where a lot of the cost is,,, but I've never seen a mosh pit at a busking gig 😅

I like the Roland for the channels, effects, the look, and durability. I do find the Roland sounds bright with high mids. Benton DOES have a warmer tone (minus the tweeters on Roland). But Roland looks more pro and not like something that belongs in my living room or practice space. I do like the idea of 10 more Watts but the speakers are a bit smaller than Roland's. When you did the comparison on the street (at the end of her original song), you recorded the Roland at a different (side) angle and it sounded bad compared to the frontal sound of the Benton. That test wasn't well thought out, i think. I own the Roland as shown and i play heavy lead stuff with it. i like those effects and pro look of the Roland. One thing i dislike about the Roland is how the knobs look upside down when i sit behind the amp as i play to have access to the controls.

i use the standard Roland cube street. Much more cost effective than the bigger street X and is a great little bit of kit! is lighter, and still sounds great, plenty of effects and EQ options. its red too which i think looks pretty cool.

... I have a street cube ex... It is just better, yes it is heavier.. Yes it is bigger... Yes it is a bit of a ball ache to move it.. But when your plugged in and playing.. You can hold your own against a pan pipe band... And everyone knows your there.. Great review.... If you can only afford the Hartley Benton get that to earn the money for a street cube ex... Keep the Faith. Taz. Plymouth.

I use the Street cube EX all the time as my main amp. If you use Ikea LADDA Rechargeable Batteries, AA, HR6, 1.2V, 2450mAh in these amps, you can get a couple of full evenings playing without recharging. Defiantly wouldn't recommend cheap batteries or even Duracell for this as they don't have a high enough milliamp hours rating and will go flat quickly.

The Harley Benton sounds great, and being a light amp is just bonus. Having a built-in rechargeable battery in the Harley Benton, well, that would seal the deal for me. Battery management is just one more thing a musician has to deal with on the Roland. Good review and comparison.

I see it differently. Built in battery is a bit more comfort but on the other hand if battery fail (which should happen anytime and warranty will not solve your issue within 5min) ussually you dont have any other option (trust me that very limited QTY of people is owning and transport substitute original battery pack. But AA battery you should have in your bag or should be purchased anywhere. All the more you should use even powerbank if you use transformation from 5V DC to 9V DC central negative polarity by simple usage of Engl Powertap Portable adapter (for sure amp needs to be 9V as well). Then you have much more option how to handle eletric power ;). So for me is must that amp is equipt by AA battery comparement and 9V DC power input. But not pushing my set up to anbody just my opinion. Take care ;)

4 advantages i can think of about using batteries instead of a built-in battery is 1. you can have an almost unending use of the amp by having 2 sets of rechargeable batteries each time you go out to play where the first one will be the main batteries and when it dies out, you can charge it while you use the 2nd set and then interchange them as needed; 2. when the built-in batteries of the amp malfunction, you have to disassemble the whole thing or have it repaired/serviced out somewhere, you won't have that problem with the cube street; 3. possibly no risk for much further damage to the device if the batteries leak/get damaged ---just take the damaged batteries out, 4. you don't have to plug the whole device to an outlet which is logistically easier to do. But again, in terms of price point and carry weight/size, no question about the HB.

Yeah, gotta agree. We use all rechargeables in our 3 amps and acoustics. They're a bit of a pain and the upfront costs are pretty dear. But, they're good for about 5 years and have no doubt paid for themselves after a year. An onboard rechargeable rarely gives the time stated. Half if you're lucky. That plus once it goes out? You have to call it a day. We carry an extra charged up set for each amp plus a set of alkaline...just in case. When an onboard rechargeable amp has a swap out option then I'll invest. Other than that we're all good.👍
@Muzikman127

@@MeneerHerculePoirot to be honest, I'm not sure in-built batteries for things that don't need them to be designed that way should even be legal. You're intentionally turning a product that could last ages into e-waste after a couple of years. If there's no reason your product can't use some standard sized cell in format that is easily replaceable/accessible, then that's pretty indefensible

The best plus for the Harley Benton is its half the price. Plus it's rechargeable. Plus it is a 3 input channel. It has a lot of good stuff going for it and a gig bag. And it's so light...almost weighing nothing. The sound of the Roland sound a wee bit fuller to my ears and maybe a wee bit better. So, all that said I would give the Harley Benton a go.

Owner of the street box and it’s a nice bit of kit. Relatively cheap and my 61 reissue SG also sounds very good through it as a clean just on edge of breakup amp with the master set just about right. Also the battery and Bluetooth are nice features. And bag is a nice addition too for jams.

I use the Roland Cube Street EX. One thing I don't think you tested was how each copes with backing tracks as originally I had the smaller Street cube which had I think 5.5 inch speakers but a much lower output. The smaller Roland cube coped well with just guitar and vocals but not with backing tracks as well whereas the larger EX does cope with the 8 inch speakers be it a little bass light. I did also find when I ran the Roland EX on batteries the output is lower and if you had a heavy bassy backing track and try and turn the volume up it would start compressing the sound which is annoying. But it didn't do that when running on mains. I like the fact with the Roland EX with the outs you can run an additional maybe 10 inch powered speaker or 2 for more volume and bass. Would like to see a master volume and blue tooth.

They are both good solid busking/small acoustic gig options. HB is very well priced for a budget option. However, the cube sounds like it has more headroom and is sturdier; so prob a better long term option if your budget stretches to it. Could always use rechargeable batteries in the cube too to cut down on battery expenditure; esp if Poundland run out of multipacks 😛 Good real life comparison vid though 👍

Great review bro . So my thoughts are! They both do the same job, I felt that the HB had a great sound considering the speakers size 5”x2 with a warm tone and the gig bag definitely makes it a more appealing product for commuting. The price £249 is good to for what you get 60watts is more then enough for busking. I would say I’d be frightened to drop it as it does look a little thin in comparison to the cube But well worth the money for a rechargeable system. The cube 🤔 well if I’m going to be honest I feel it does have better effects especially on the vocal sound but that could just be that it has 2x8” speakers with the 2 additional tweeters , To give it a bit more depth of sound . I’ve found that most of Roland gear are very well engineered and very robust so for something more long term I probably would go with the cube as I can be a little heavy handed at times . Apart from the battery not lasting very long on the cube and for the bigger cost of £430 maybe if Roland added a rechargeable battery pack it would make it more appealing to the consumer . Other then that they are both very good systems for the price and nice to see other options out there aimed for the busker or even an exceptional practice amp 🤘

My pinion: rechargeable built in battery is not an advantage because when the battery is low you can not play because you must recharge. On the roland if you have battery low you just change with other battery and you instantly can play again. Anyway roland sell separately a rechargable unit for the street cube amp. Another point is that any lithium battery have some year of life then is degrading, so personally I think the harley benton amp life is not so long. I think the roland street cube you can use it for the life. About the bluetooth connection: roland dont have bluetooth, but you can buy on amazon any bluetooth with 3.5 jack and connect on the aux in of the amps so you can easy play backing tracks from your phone without any cable. So personally I think roland street cube ex is far superior respect the harley benton, especially about sound quality and built quality too

i think the harley sounds better, looks classier, and is just over all better for the casual busker, but i think the roland is actually a rebadged crate patent for the crate taxi or limo and if you can find those they are still going after 20 years....the batteries in the harley will fail long before that

built-in batteries are a con not a pro. The roland will still be working in 10 years; you can use whatever batteries you want, most people will use lithium ion rechargeable batteries. The difference is that with an in-built battery, your whole amp is going to become e-waste when the batteries give up (as all batteries do). With external batteries, you can recharge them also, but when they finally die, you don't have to throw away a whole amplifier; just buy new batteries.

@@manguera9 People could simply just not tip at all, it all adds up, any tip is good. Some cities have many buskers; to tip all of them with even £1.00 a day (if you work or frequent the City) could work out rather expensive for tipsters...five buskers = £5.00 x 5 = days per week = £25.00 per week, that's a lot of money in tight times. I'd prefer 200 tips of 50p rather than 15 tips of £5.00. It's not necessarily the size of a tip that's important but often the quantity of tips. "Real Musicians" as you referred to, don't necessarily need to busk on the streets, they do it out of the love of performing and the music. Also, getting their name out there and getting a few quid while possibly advertising where they gig, or where they're willing to gig. Plus, most have social media platform's and all that Good stuff which can bring in revenue; some also sell CD's and Merchandise. Times have certainly changed, but it's not necessarily for the worst; for busking.
