Roland D-50 demo

A couple of presets I've found for Roland D-50. The D-50 is going through KP3 FX (ping-pong delay). This video is featured as a D-50 demo on vintagesynth.com (thanks vintage synth!).

I had three D50/D550 since the early 90s. The last one will stay forever. I studied the design of this thing in-depth. I still can't tell how exactly the outputs produce this beautiful, wonderful, amazing sound. Some are like lullabies and some make me cry, seriously.

One of the best synthesizers ever to grace the planet earth. Forever magical. Nothing that came after this is quite the same (pure romplers loose the magic, virtual analogs are different). It was Roland's way of getting around the 'digital problem' combined with their massive analog experience that led to them basically emulating a DCO SuperJX (with more features) but with digital tech + samples/PCM added on top if you wanted them. Also great filters for digital.

Great demo of great patches in a great synthesizer. For the people who wonder where to find the 'Von Kleist" patch. I found it in a bank called BancoR5. I downloaded it from a D50 group at Yahoo. Shimmering Pad is also a patch in this bank.

This is the first D50 demo I've listened to after watching loads of JD-800 videos and although I haven't the technical knowledge to explain why, this synth definitely sounds like it has the edge to my ears. Having said that, I'm hoping to buy the JD tomorrow. Think I might have to keep an eye out for one of these though.

This was the first synth i ever bought,i loved it.i kept/played it for about 5,6 years and then sold it as i needed money :-( 2 sounds which are still stuck in my mind from this brilliant synth are "stacatto heaven" and "deep analog strings",2 wonderful sounds. After selling my D-50,many years later i now have a Roland XP-30 which is also very good :-)

@Vondur No D-50 isn't 'just' a rompler. It has something akin to a virtual synthesizer engine depending on the mode you choose. To put it simply it's not like a Korg M1 which is 'stuck' with it's PCM. D-50 you can bypass samples (many programmers do) and use structure mode one, which is 2 'hypothetical analog synths' (according to the manual). These synths are not using sampled waveforms but create them electronically - hence D-50 character and warmth.

@aureolamusicdotcom Analog filters? For example the Jupiters, the JX-8P and the alpha Juno have analog filters...but the D-50 is totally digital with a digital filter called TVF (instead of VCF).

@MafiarProductions I don't think it will work with USB2MIDI - it seems that cable is too fast for D-50; try using the standard MIDI cable (5 pin on both ends)

Craigslist in USA is the best source, I just seen one locally here (San Francisco) for $300. Also, D-50 uses universal multi-tap power transformer inside with taps from 100V (Japan) to 240V (UK, Australia). You can take D-50 from anywhere in the world and all you have to do is to move brown wire to 240V tap, no power adapters needed. Also, the odd 2-prong power socket can be easy replaced to standard 3-prong IEC socket, fits to the same hole. Just don't connect third ground pin to synth chassis.

@tmste First virtual analog? Hmm... =) Well, the same technique that was used in D50 synth partials, was used earlier in Casio CZ-series (with less resolution perhaps). Filtered saw/square waves on D50 is nothing more than a phase distorted (co)sine wave. But don't they sound beautiful?

Most likely because it has warmth of early (noisy) digital mixed with a very unique synthesis engine, most of the pads above are in structure mode 1/2 which uses NO sample (so NOT a rompler). The saw/square waves are created live (digitally not sampled) and fed through some very nice digital TVFs. Short version is D-50 sounds alive while most digital synths after sounded pre-canned/static.

@MafiarProductions Yes it is possible and easy. Some midi to USB cables confound thier MIDI IN and MIDI OUT ends. Try switching them around, i.e. put the MIDI IN prong in the D50's MIDI OUT port, Fruity Loops should automatically detect presence of a midi controller.

That explains a lot - a mates band had to get rid of their brand new D70 (one of the first ones) as the sound was so clear it just dominated everything. The D50 didn't have that problem.

I doubt these are factory sounds if that's what you mean - mine came with all sorts of organ sounds...I've found these patches on the internet
