Roland E 4 external instrument input tests

Various tests on the Roland E-4 are performed, to connect an external instrument and use it as an effect or looper.
There are a few things to consider and a few workarounds involved in getting this to work (more or less):
1) As explained on an article on the Roland blog, the splitter must be of CTIA type (not OMTP).
2) You have to set FORCE HEADSET to FORCE in the E-4 settings.
3) You have to plug something to the front MIC IN connector, otherwise you'll get no sound from the external instrument.
Keep in mind these are not the official guidelines for getting the external instrument to work; these are workarounds that I and other people have found empirically.
I don't know if the unit is faulty or not. But it seems most people have the very same issues.
Despite the workarounds above, sometimes the status of the external input will "reset", and you have to unplug and plug in the dummy jack at the front MIC IN.

Ciao, grazie per il video. Io ho risolto con iRig 2 anche se ovviamente diventa mono. Secondo te Lopop nel suo video cosa usava? Tu a che conclusione ottimale sei arrivato per usarlo accoppiato al J-6? Grazie!

Si, avevo letto che alcuni hanno avuto più successo con iRig 2 (ma se non sbaglio quello si inserisce nel jack MIC IN?!?), ma non mi è capitato di trovarlo a un prezzo decente, quindi non l'ho provato. Loopop usa uno splitter come il mio, ma evidentemente anche quando trovi quello dello standard giusto (CTIA) ci sono ulteriori variazioni che influenzano il funzionamento. Credo che venderò l'E-4 perché in questo modo non è uno strumento affidabile; forse non è progettato per questo (anche se c'è un articolo su roland.com dove viene spiegato proprio come usarlo come unità effetto esterno per altri strumenti, come faccio io in questo video) o forse non è stato testato a sufficienza in questa modalità d'uso, o qualcos'altro.

ah, comunque anche con lo splitter TRRS l'input è mono, in quanto il cavo TRRS passa tre canali, che l'E-4 usa due in uscita, e uno in ingresso (ma per come è cablato il connettore di input dello splitter, sei costretto a usare un cavo stereo per l'input, perchè un jack mono chiuderebbe il circuito del segnale) forse avrei dovuto includere un diagramma del cablaggio di questo splitter perché mi rendo conto che non è ovvio come debba essere cablato lo splitter, e non è nemmeno uno standard, quindi magari acquistandone un altro - sempre CTIA - potrebbe lasciare uno dei due canali del jack rosso scollegato, o avere altre leggere variazioni
