I got the FP10. What kept me from getting the FP30 was the difference in weight, size, and of course $$. My idea was to have a basic practice instrument at home (with headphones) for day - to - day practice and learning new pieces, and then play, perform and do recordings on a real Grand Piano I have regular access to... better said, HAD, until COVID19 shut the place down. Now I wish I'd gotten the FP30 which has on-board feature that allows recording to a memory stick, and 2 line outputs (which would allow me to record directly to the aux of a recorder while still using headphones or a small monitor speaker). Not that I'm unhappy with the FP10! It fits the bill pefectly for the originally intended purpose, but if I had to make the choice again I'd go for the FP30 because of the additional features I mentioned, and I want to share this point of view here.

Hi Andres, I've just ordered one FP10 two days ago and as I wait for it to come I've been watching videos about it and I'm noticing that there's a bunch of people out there having that problem with the keys, saying that they make that clunk sound and is annoying. I never played a DP so I can't tell if that would annoy me a lot but knowing myself I honestly think it will. What's your thoughts on this issue? Thanks

@@luispinheirodosmontes7219 Hi Luis. I have my FP10 since November 2019. I have put it to use average 2 hours / day since then, in professional grade classical music practice sessions, which are hard for any instrument. Only recently the keys are starting to clatter a little bit, which doesn't wonder me: Roland says specifically that this is an entry level e-piano, implicit: Not a professional, heavy duty grade one. The *clunking* sound some complain about is not constant. It happens only when I 'repeat' at a certain speed, and doesn't affect the sound of the piano, and Roland says specifically that this is normal; not a defect. I hope this information helps, and that you enjoy it nevertheless!

Hi guys, wanted to express some gratitude for the tremendous help, even tho you're on the other side of the world from me, bc I finally got a piano today! (..tho there's been a lil' mix-up I'm not sure what to feel about that I want to hear your thoughts, if I may, please?) I've been in the shopping research haze for the past two months, went from looking for a decent keyboard to play my fav Sondheim tunes to wanting a full sized piano bc I got interested in classics down the road, and stumbled upon this channel somewhere around that change of objective. I gotta say this is a very nice space and I ended up falling in love with Stu with his playing, presentation and vast knowledge; that's delivered full of personality, enthusiasm, and compassion. This is embarrassing, but if I have to confess I'm currently having the biggest sort of celebrity crush on Stu, to the point I'm looking up his stuff here and on other platform, got myself in a "I could listen to him talk/play for hours" kind of situation haha. I'm binging many of this channel's videos, even ones unrelated to my purpose, it's been a fun and educating ride to a world I've always thought could never comprehend for a decade. I was surprised that my country have a piano industry when I watched your 'Pianos of The World' series. Of course, my appreciation also goes beyond Stu to the rest of the team for the high-quality and engaging content you guys put out, as well as the nice interactions in the community. (Can I also just say what a nice community this is? Like 99% of the time the comments here had been a joy to read; there are times I stumbled upon a channel where the comments just make me want to step out asap.) So, I've been on-off interested in playing an instrument since grade school, tried guitar a few times but it never really clicked in my brain? Pianos are actually one I want to play but I never expressed this to my parents bc I had an idea how expensive it was where I'm from, both the intrument and the lesson. Now, my family still isn't exactly supportive and discouraged me (even a bit against music in general), but I'm at a point where I can personally afford a digital piano and not be a burden, and tldr I fell in love with Roland FP10 (tho I was kinda on an agonizing FP10 vs P45 for awhile there) and decided to buy a used one for a good deal. The thing is, I've asked the right questions and gotten good answer except one thing I didn't consider which is... the seller apparently mistook the piano he owned as FP10 and listed as such, while it's actually FP30 which I just found out when it arrived at home a few hours ago. Now I tested almost everything and it works great (except the Bluetooth, which I'm still not sure about, and the USB Midi bc I don't have the cable on hand), but I'm just not sure how to feel? Is this a fortunate/unfortunate thing? I'm a little bit disappointed bc it's not the FP10 I fell in love with, but objectively is this a lucky mistake kind of thing, or one I should be upset about? The other thing, I checked the box, and it's listed as the model "FP 30 BK L" (the list was the usual BK, WH, then BK L, WH L) do you have an idea what's the L stands for? I have yet to find anything on it, and I'm a little worried thinking it might have to do with Bluetooth capability. I really want to be happy with my first piano, even might be my only piano (at least for a long while), but currently I'm just... anxious. Would appreciate to hear your thoughts! Thanks and have a nice day Stu, Brent, and the rest of the team! :)

Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Firstly, thank you so much for your incredibly kind words and for supporting our channel! To say that we appreciate it would be a massive understatement. Also, I will be happy to share your kind words and feedback to Stu on your behalf. :) I am glad to hear that you've taken the plunge into studying music and the piano. Playing piano is incredibly rewarding and there are nothing but benefits that come along with it. The Roland FP10 is a wonderful instrument. When shopping for a starting digital piano, I (like Stu) prioritize action as this will pay dividends in the long run in terms of technical development. As for the mixup with the piano, while the FP30 is not a current model, it is a superior instrument to the FP10 in virtually every category. While they possess the same action (PHA4), the FP30 has a superior speaker system, more built-in features, and triple pedal support. So, from my stand point, I think this could be a happy and beneficial mistake in the long run! Thanks again and enjoy your new piano! :)

Great review, thank you. I saw somewhere that on the FP30, if you hold down some keys and play other keys, it will, like on acoustic piano, "activate" the held down keys from the harmonics. I was a demo of that. Does the FP10 do the same or is this part of the chips/programming differences between the 2 models?
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! We're glad you enjoyed it! The Roland FP30X model does in fact have a "string resonance", which simulates the sympathetic vibrations of strings adjacent to the played string like on an actual piano. The FP10 has this feature as well, but it is always on and not adjustable. Overall, the FP10 and FP30X both use the same core SuperNATURAL sound engine, but there are some differences between the two when you compare their spec sheets, such as the max polyphony.

Your reviews are so fantastic! The two audio ports and the three pedals are really the deciding factor. I could not figure that out for sure without your review. I agree with what you said about the DP-10 pedal. I had tried an M-audio pedal for a couple of years, but it squeeked, moved, and did not have the half-pedaling option. I finally decided to get the DP-10, which costs almost $50 but I found it to be well worth it. The design of the bottom rubber, to address the moving, etc. is important for piano players. Some reviews say that the FP10 will add 20 additional sounds with the Piano Partner 2 app, making it the same as the FP30 in that regard. Are the added sounds the same quality as the FP30? And does the app give additional sounds to the FP30 on top of the 35?

In a recent KZbin video (with a more negative bias), the FP30 was reported as being very tall. Stu, when you sit at the keyboard, you look like you're sitting at a good height relative to keyboard. How are you achieving this? I thought X-stands were for standing gigs. How do you keep the correct height? How does Roland recommend keeping correct height? As I shop, Roland's custom stand doesn't show dimensions and searching the internet for this keyboard height + stand is noticeably missing.

I switched from yamaha clavinova to fp10, and for me the sound of fp10 is really awful without speakers. The key touch and the mechanism is something more than legit for the price. Additionally, SuperNatural algorithm has some very nice piano sounds. If I knew about the sound from the speakers, I would have bought fp30 or CASIO Privia, but unfortunately they told me that fp10 is the same instrument as fp30, but with less polyphony and sounds. I am not sure if this is true. I remember myself playing on fp30 and I remember a more legit sound. The speakers of fp10 are very moderate and it is a real problem for somebody who doesn't like them because he has to buy external speakers and it doesn't seem to support all the kinds of speakers or headphones.

When having the FP30 replaying what you've recorded, does it output midi signals just like when you're playing on it normally, so that you can recorde those on in a DAW if desired? Pretty sure the answer is yes, but I'd like to have that confirmed. Also, can you record and store multiple recordings, and if so how many?
@xyhmo
@xyhmo 11 ай бұрын
If GPT4 is correct, the recording is actually audio and not midi, so playback will NOT output midi in that case. That's disappointing. I want to record the ideas I might get during a session, and then just transfer it to the DAW later. Instead of just using the recording feature to remember the ideas and having to play them live - which won't work anyway since it only records a single audio, if GP4 is correct. There should have been a midi recording feature.
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos 11 ай бұрын
Hi there! My understanding is that, even when playing back a recorded file from onboard the piano, it would still be spitting out MIDI data. With that said, if you record the track to a USB stick, I believe it will only be an audio file without any MIDI data.

No Sir, the Roland Piano Designer app will not work with the FP-30 as I have the FP-30; I use the Roland Piano Partner 2 app to handle all on board controls, voicings, settings, volumes, rhythm track selections, etc... Piano Designer will not work with the FP-30; I believe it will work with the FP-90 if you are willing and able to spend $2000 for that beautiful Roland model.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to try the Roland FP30X and... It sounds good, and most importantly for me, the key structure and key action are very good, but... I was shocked when I accidentally pressed the plastic part directly above the keys. The plastic has bent a lot!!! I pressed it a little harder and the keys fell off too! For a €650 instrument, the body quality is terrible! Plastic keyboards for 100 euros are more solid...

Hi there! The FP30X's PHA4 action certainly provides quite the rewarding touch. I am little confused as to what you are referring to. I tried pressing the plastic enclosure above the keys as hard as I could and nothing bent nor did the keys fall off. The enclosure seems pretty durable and robust from my perspective.

Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! While I am familiar with the NUX NPK10 model, I have not personally played one. With that said, I can attest to the Roland FP10 being a wonderful piano with a fantastic tone and touch. In my opinion, it presents one of the best cost-to-value ratios on the market right now. :)

I bought an FP-10 and I’m very happy with it. However I recently saw my mate’s FP-30 and there is one difference worth flagging. The position of the headphone jack on the FP-10 is at the back of the unit more or less behind middle C. It’s very inconvenient and fiddly. It’s really the only disappointment I have with the FP-10. By contrast the headphone jack position on the FP-30 is much more sensible; on the front on the left hand side.

I bought FP30 for my daughter. And I bought NUX NPK-10 for myself. It seems to me that NUX sounds and feels better than FP-30, it has 189 polyphony, not as many sounds as FP-30. Grand piano and organs sound seriously better on NUX. The design and functions are so similar that it feels like they are made by the same factory. Even the functions are assigned to the same keys. I'm going to try if Roland apps you mentioned would work with NUX. That would be cool Nice review!

@TigerCarpenter
@TigerCarpenter 2 жыл бұрын
@@viggo100 the keys are identical, only Roland FP-30X has more sounds, which are assigned to Bb0-G#1 on NUX, and Roland Bb0-C3 or beyond. NUX Chip: Dream 5708 DSP with 189 polyphony, 12 instruments FP-30X Chip: SuperNATURAL with 256 polyphony, 54 instruments The buttons are identical, but Roland placed them vertically, and NUX horizontally. the rest of the mold is identical, including the dimensions. The speakers are identical 2x10.5W (sound weak, you need to practice with the headphones, then the sound is pristine on both, I prefer NUX sound, no bias here as I own both) BTW I have very good hearing, I measured my ears up to over 20kHz while my friends usually stop hearing sound above 15.5kHz. I use Philips Fidelio X1 headphones to practice and to test the sound. On Roland FP-30X, when you hold the piano keys more than 75% way down, you can hear some high frequency buzz which doesn't fade out, as long as you keep the piano key down. The volume of that buzz is very minimum and you can hardly hear it, but i can, my friends said they can't hear anything. When I did the same test on NUX, the sound is perfectly clean, no matter what velocity, percentage of the piano key down, holding, releasing, pulsing, there is no buzz, except the desired note sound. On Roland, the high frequency buzz is on EVERY key held at 75% down. It sounds like some end of the frequency gate, which they set maybe to 15kHz and assumed nobody would hear it anyway. I can and it irritates me to the extent I don;t want to play on Roland at all. Especially when you play pianissimo and that buzz level is comparable to the note sound. It will freak you out, and to silence the buzz, you will be hitting the piano keys harder, to achieve better "signal to noise" ratio.

I absolutely agree with you. I had also tried experiencing sounds of both Roland and Nux side by side in a musical store. The quality of Nux was way much better & more realistic than roland. Nux was also ahead in terms of speaker quality. Only doubt i have is about the durability of Nux Piano. Roland is a well established brand while Nux is relatively new. Also does keys of Nux start making any clicking sound after some time of usage?

@@happylearning192 I've been using Nux piano for few months now and I sometimes like to go crazy forte and play rock boogie chords repeatedly. So far I have no issues with the keys. They seem as solid as houses. The hammer weighted action is also very realistic and feels like a real stand up fortepian. I like the Nux sounds so much that when I record Midi I actually ask Nux piano to play back the Midi recording so that I can capture its own sound rather than a VST virtual instrument. I'm really pleased with the Nux purchase and highly recommend it especially at this price

Yes. What none of the reviewers here on YT has mentioned is that you can download the REFERENCE MANUAL for free from the Roland website (in PDF format). This explains all the functions you can set on the FP10 WITHOUT having to connect it via bluetooth to a device. You can TRANSPOSE, and also fine-tune the pitch to other instruments if you play ensemble. The REFERENCE manual is complementing the printed OWNERS MANUAL that comes with the keyboard in the box.

Tbh you are a bit all over the place with this comparison review. You began by saying they are basically the same hardware wise and the difference is only software. Then you pointed out the superior hardware and sound features of the fp-30?? Btw the fp-10 DOES have the ability to record and play back your performance, I've done it. All in all this is video looks as if it's just been thrown together quickly without doing thorough research. It would have been much better if you had taken the time to move the camera and show the apps working. The fp-10 and the fp-30 are quite different, having the same keyboard action and similar weight does not make them identical.

Please clear something up for me... On this video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bn7VqHt3ntWBrck where you compare the Yamaha P45 to the Roland FP10, at around the 12 minute mark you say that the FP10 can use the piano designer app, but not the FP30. Yet on this video you say that the FP30 can use the piano designer app, and has more features available on that app over the FP10. So which is it? Can i use the piano designer app on the Roland FP30 or not? I'm going to buy one of these. I want to buy the FP30, but if i can't use the piano designer features on the FP30 i'll buy the FP10. I'm going to do my own research in the meantime but thought i'd point out your contradiction and allow you to clarify.
