Thanks so much. Would really appreciate if you can do more of these videoes. I seem to have som trouble when it comes to recording a patter. If I have recorded the drums and the bass, I can't change the sound of the other 6 patterns. It's stuck to one sound. Am I doing something wrong?

I've had this thing for 6 months and it constantly does my head in! It is the least intuitive thing I've ever tried to use! The manual is hopeless. It does a lot of cool stuff but it will drive you crazy trying to figure out how to make it do what you want it to do...

rio197 yeah, it has loads of great sounds but it's the least intuitive thing to use, especially on a dark stage! I'm just going to put mine in my studio and buy a Korg SV2 for live playing. I don't have enough time to work this thing out.

Very useful vid, thank you. I bought this machine last week, there are lots of points you've brought to light in this vid. However, I see from the comment below that you can't make songs with the Juno DS, just put together chord sequences to jam over. I trust this is not true and I am misunderstanding. I bought this keyboard just to write backing tracks, which can't just have a simple sequence repeated endlessly but must have at least some sort of chorus. Is this not possible on the Juno DS? A far more primitive machine, Boss' Dr Rhythm, was a joy to use, and you could make songs on it. Verse, chorus, middle 8 if you want it. It came out maybe 20 years ago, sadly mine stopped working properly. If the Juno can do this I will be delighted.

Hey great video! Quick question. I have the Juno and trying to record multiple tracks (each separately) but without stopping in between. Basically, record drums on track 1 with the loop on. Then, switch to track 2 and record bass guitar without pausing the track. Then, with the drums and bass still looping on tracks 1 and 2, switch to track 3 to record piano. I typically use a 1 measure count in. What makes this difficult is that usually to record, we hit the record button first and then the play/pause button to start the 1 measure count in, but this isn't possible in my scenario because it's already playing. Really appreciate any help you can provide!

Hello Ed, big fan of your tutorials I have juno ds61 juno ds 88 and rd 88... Question for you Hello all, I am working on the song September , I have created a split performance of strings on bottom and brass on top. In the song there is a really fast brass run that lasts for 2 measures. I created pattern of that run at a slow tempo and then saved it at the correct tempo. MY question is how can I attach that pattern to the split keyboard performance, so when I bring up that split string and brass performance it will also allow me to have the pattern connected so that I may tap a pad to trigger that brass run at whatever point in the song .

With a DAW :-) Seriously, though, for any lengthy composing, I think you really do have to use the USB interface. But you can make something, then assign the .wav to a phrase pad to use as a backing track.

If you didnt figure it out, you need to hit 'mixer' and then select a different track than the one you recorded in.

i got this as a total beginner and found out it had a looper, so figured id mess with that for a while. i cant for the life of me figure out how to make it stop playing the rhythm pattern and just record my own sounds. theres no indication of anything selected but my saved patterns then i hit play and all these presets start playing that i never selected. im on user and all of that, have my 8 pads picked for sounds, appregios set, etc. but when i record it starts playing a kit or something on its own without any of my input. why is this so confusing.

Yes you can by save/writing the same sequence Into multiple user slots then make variations to each one then during playback you simply manually switch between user blocks...oh yeah rename each user copy to the appropriate song part : chorus, verse, bridge, etc. Song mode and copy sequence to new location Edit cut sequence size and append sequence are functions that need to be added for faster work flow

basically every option you have involves too much work. It's like a really light workstation. Sequencing isn't too bad on this thing, there's a lot of options but the interface is pretty awful, but at least it's there.

I've been using the Pattern Sequencer a lot on my Juno DS-88 from Roland, and recently I've lost the Sustain that my damper (DP-10) applies to my recording. It works fine when I play it live, it just doesn't apply the effect when ever I hear the playback. Any thoughts on how to fix it? I've been reading the manual up and down, over and over again and I can't find a solution

I had a nagging feeling that I had seen more options somewhere, and I found them! If you go to page 33 of the Parameter Guide PDF, you'll see 4 different metronome options under Menu - system - metronome. Always on, always off, on during play, on during recording. Also you can choose the metronome sound (cowbell, for instance).

I have recorded some of these patterns, but with the right tempo and everything, and I had them saved the sound great for a while, however I don't know all of sudden the tempo on some of those tracks seem to be off, it changes instruments by itself and even add some notes to the previously recorded pattern. That messes everything. I had them perfectfly to my ear, and now i go back to them and i see this mess. What is causing this?

Mark McCarrell. You can set each measure to 32 notes. Each track can have a split patch. Being able to play a bass below c and a synth pad above middle c on 1 track is great and cuts down on tracks needed. If you need more tracks you can save your patterns in order and and switch patterns seamlessly like they do in chain mode on a groove box. A good example of a split patch is Wr 055 80's Combo with bass below middle c an a pad above middle c. You can easily make your own splits for each patch.

Good question. Once the layered sequence has been saved, the keyboard should at least change into another key with the strike of a keyboard note. Maybe it's understood that it does, he should have demoed that. Maybe it doesn't. If a player can't create parts to fit an entire song track (that has multiple keys), that... is very limited.

Juno ds is a great board. Hook it up to logic x and you tripple its already AMAZING value. Customize your sounds. Import flash sample loops. Especially me with ni machine mk3. Oh lord its like all on me no excuses. This is not a true workstation but it is definitely a necessity in any current home studio or better enviroment. Plus arrange a set list simply. Man this thing is basicly what YOU make it!

First thank you for posting this. I just purchased one of these. I keep trying to record my OWN drum pattern. If I make a mistake i have to erase the WHOLE thing. I can't figure out how to just erase ONE note. Once I start recording a pattern I can't change the variables like pattern length or time signature. I end up jus going to a whole different pattern and starting over as I have no clue how to erase a pattern!

Yes. I believe you just press erase when it's NOT playing. If you try to press erase while it's playing it does the "real time" erase which is very annoying. So it's either just erase or shift+erase while it's stopped will erase the pad's sequence entirely.

Justin Leon You can assign the knobs above the faders when in "assign mode" (hit select twice). Out of the box I believe they're mapped to an EQ. I haven't messed with them much since I do more straightforward dream pop sounds without a lot of hands on modulation. I mapped Assign 1 to " portamento on/off" for one song but that's it. You can get crazy with the routing but the menus are hectic. It needs a good software editor.

Chris Hall select a pattern number. Then select a crib kit. Then hit record. Then play whatever you want. Done You can then choose another drum kit and another pattern number you have eight which I'd more then enough to use half for just the beat then one for bass one for lead one for chords and one for atmosphere.

what does the ERASE button do? Do you always have to hit play to play it? Can't you just start it by hitting a key? After evaluating the pattern feature it seems you can only run it with the play button. It may work good for a DAW situation but playing live having to hit a tiny black button on a black background is silly . I think the Phrase buttons should have had more functionality to trigger patterns or arpeggios (which you can't even create your own), but it seems they only select parts in performances and inputs for recording. Very limited.

Yeah...look for the price, you're not gonna get Motif XF type sequencing...however, if you just use this as a sound engine with an external computer based sequencer now you've got something... you can save the songs to a thumb drive and then play with it live...just the weight difference is worth the purchase for a gigging keyboard. 35 lbs for the 88 key??? Wow!

The "LEVEL" fader for my "Phrase Pad" does not work. The only level that works is "Upper" (entire keyboard).

If you use split or dual you can use the lower/upper levels. In single patch mode only upper is used. If you turn on rhythm pattern the phrase pad lever controls volume of drums.

They are quite the same; except for the sounds. The xps30 is more orientally oriented in sounds.

@@arturomma8560 No, they both can. The hardware inside is the same. And there are people who have made samples which you can download and install for the juno DS.

@@rolandberendonck3900 oh I was wrong, bro I'm looking for a easy keyboard to make The Killers and Coldplay covers... many covers. I'd use pianos, strings, many different drums and I'd make many synth sounds like all their songs.. Do you recomend Roland XPS30 or Juno DS? Thanks.

@@arturomma8560 Yes this keyboard has a ton of sounds however the XPS30 has a more oriental sounds so it is more suited and bought in countries like Inda for instance. So I would skip that one if I were you. The DS will be a good unless you want to make high quality recordings. It is perfect just to fool around, do a gig etc. but the sounds are not studio quality.

Laaaaaawd !!! This is confusing. I have a Yamaha Motif ES in my home studio and sequencer onboard is a killer tool. I have been eying the Yamaha MODX and licking my lips.

Nobody ever answered if your measures can vary per pad/patteren. I would think they dont all have to be the same measure.
