I just purchased the Roland Juno DS to replace an old 90' series Yamaha CS1X synth. I have put them side by side and strings and a lot of other sounds are pretty identical. Amazing, 20 year difference, and the sounds are still pretty much the same across both product lines.

Yes! sampling does not seem to have improved much in the lower cost synths, but effects have improved, and that is why these new synths sound better (generally). As with all synths, the synth is only half the sound, the rest comes from the effects, EQ, and choice in layering. A single sound on synth without effects is pretty dry, and not very exciting unless there is a big stereo field. It seems we need computers to make better sampled sounds. Roland on the other hand has gone past sampling and into new territory with SuperNatural available on the FA and more expensive dig. pianos. i have been waiting 30 years for better samples, but they don't come. Software seems to be the only alternative to re-created acoustic instruments....I hate software.

Thanks for such a GREAT vid--though I'm a year behind seeing it lol! Really helps--and yet, so hard to figure out which to go for. I haven't had a board in a LONG time and am thinking to go for one of these as it fits my budget and needs. In the past I was a Roland guy and am still inclined that way, but to my ear on this video the MX seems generally to have the warmer, richer sounds I'd want. And yet going through all the comments, opinion seems so entirely split-- pretty much one for one right down the line. I can't see making the choice without trying them each out side by side for myself!

Have been playing both in the local music store, looking for a reasonably priced, fairly light weight keyboard with good Acoustic Piano sounds, which is my main concern. Finally went with the Yamaha, and could not be happier. I will say this, in person, the acoustic piano sounds on the MX88 blow the Juno DS out of the water, not even close. In fact they are better than my Roland RD 88, which is now up for sale. I bought the Juno DS 76, and returned it pronto, it felt like a toy to me and the AC sounds were awful, even the ones downloaded from Roland couldn't touch the Yamaha. Now if synth is your main thing, then that's another discussion, I'm loving the Motif sounds on the MX88, but Roland has always been fantastic with synth sound and functions, and the Junos do not disappoint there.

I prefer the feel/response of the Roland; it's a bit lighter, whereas the Yamaha seems to require more effort to muscle through the last 30% of the key travel. (More of a squish, less of a strike/bounce.) Consequently, I found that lots of rapid runs with the Yamaha tired out my hand more quickly than with the Roland. However, in this video, I agree that the Yamaha sounds a tad "warmer." (It isn't an easy difference to hear, but I do hear it.) I wonder if multiband compression could make the Roland sound just as warm? Or is the difference more than just EQ?

Keyboards are always subjected and based on the hearer. To say one is better than the other....Most of the time is just personal preference when you are talking about similar pricing keyboards. The next thing to look at is the functionality and features of both. Usually, that is were you will see some separation.

I have the Yamaha MX88. Like any keyboard out there it has strong and weak points. The Rhodes 74 has waaayyyyy too much stereo vibrato. However, the good thing is that the effect can be dialed back. The Yamaha has some really accurate sounds for woodwinds. Killer jazz flute, and a great soprano sax..Look Out...Ronnie Laws in the room. As far a strings go, I'm not impressed with the Yamaha - especially since I have a kurzweil keyboard with amazing string and orchestra sounds. I guess it all comes down to personal preference.

I have been a diehard roland fanatic for most of my 45 years of playing keyboards. The bang for buck is why ive gone that route more often than not....... but if the truth is to be told yamaha is unquestionably the top dog in both sound quality and features surpassing all the other competitors! A little variety is always important to me but presently i own just 1 roland, just 1 korg, and 4 yamahas. I have seldom ventured beyond these 3 big dog manufacturers in the game. I might add that i tend to prefer roland for string sounds, korg for synth solo leads and always yamaha for both acoustic and electric piano sounds.

IMHO the DS sounds more natural, then again I'm biased cuz I own one. Like some have mentioned, they're both affordable bread and butter boards, with all the sounds you need for a gig. Can't speak for the MX but the DS has a great feeling keyboard that makes it fun to play. I played a Motif 8 for years and still own a Yamaha S80 but have never as satisfied with the piano patches as I am with the DS. This new MX sounds good, just not as natural as the Roland. I can also attest that the synth sounds on the Roland are way better than anything I had on my Motif although I agree with those of you who said Yamaha has an edge when it comes to organs. Along with the patches demonstrated in this video (nice job btw) I'm sure both have a gazillion variants of pianos, clavs, organs, and electric pianos. More than enough for weekend warriors. Not sure what kind of expansion is available for the MX but with the DS you have access to entire sound libraries through their collaboration with Axial. Bottom line: if the MX was around when I bought my DS I would have taken a serious look at it, but probably still would have ended up with the Roland.

David Price thx I appreciate you watching....i don't think the Yamaha can be expanded without an iphone/ipad.... there's a free app to give you some fm sounds. So I think you'd definitely end up with the Roland still

Hi David, I have a Korg PA 700 for the arranger functions but have always wanted a 88 key instrument and the Roland sound. I am getting the DS88 at a good price and am seriously looking at buying. I play by ear and do not gig professionally, so this is just a hobbyist gear. How has your experience with the DS been and would you recommend it
@user-ed9hj8fm2t

DS defo is more natural, not as clinically sounding as MX. Yamaha do this - their Motif is excellent sounding, especially older ones. Then modx which imo is less than studio sounding, and then "live quality" mx which isnt good for studio. The moral is: unless you can afford motif, go with yamahas competitors

Had many Yamaha's, Had the firsts a C5Mu, DX7 ......As time goes on the ROLAND grown on me in ways a New Jack would never understand. I'm not worried over weight after carrying a Roland 72 or was it 73 around chic? Sound for sound the Roland goes to the top, the feel of the keys, that sound that sound that sound o.m.g. Wear and tear the yammy"s control surface goes cheesy in a lot of ways I dare to mention for fear of reprisal, in today"s world . The clack, the buttons and knobs ...gotta upgrade like a cheap car. Roland's are built like Battle Ships you never have to really let them go, there's always a place. This Board JUNO -DS 88 is a dream come true for a old fogies on a budget, with champagne taste and a bottled water wallet. Keep it simple, give me some new stuff and some nice frills ROLAND, ROLAND, ROLAND.

I'm going to get one of these two in late September and I am leaning toward the Yamaha MX88. One thing I found is that many might say that the action on the MX88 is heavy compared to the DS88. I went into the system settings today at the store and changed the touch to light and it seemed to really open up the keyboard in its responsiveness. I have lots of keyboards (31 or so) and I'm looking for another 88-key for my studio. My other 88-key is the Yamaha P95 and it is used in my band so it never comes home to my studio. I have played and owned LOTS of keyboards over my career (I'm 47 and started when I was very young) and I just love the Yamaha piano sounds. They seem to get it right and frankly, they should; they've been making pianos for over 125 years. There is something about the Yamaha piano sounds that just seem to speak to me. With the above said, I also own a Korg Kross 61 and when played from an 88-key controller it is very good but the Yamaha seems to be just warmer. I also still have two Roland P-55 piano modules that have a great stereo piano sound. I have recorded albums with both Roland piano sounds and Yamaha piano sounds but the Yamaha just seems to be a bit warmer and more traditional to my ears., especially on solo pieces. I think that the Roland DS88 offers more functionality within the keyboard without having to hook up a computer. That is nice for many, including myself. You can also download sound libraries from Roland and you can add 1 library to what the DS already has inside it. If you go to their site, you can see the different libraries and two of them are dedicated to piano sounds. I am likely going to download the piano libraries to a flash drive and load them into the DS and see if they sway me from the MX88. The DS has a better interface and much larger screen and you can play WAV files just by attaching a Flash drive. I believe that the Yamaha is not as easy. The Yamaha does have the FM Essential App though which gives you 4-operator FM sounds and the sounds will play back through the MX itself instead of having to take up extra mixer inputs. That is a big plus if you want that. I will listen to both again through my KRK KNS6400 studio phones so I can get something more than a mono BX5 monitor or mono keyboard amp. This will certainly cement which one I buy. I will mainly be using whichever one I end up with for pianos because the rest of my boards will handle everything else; just like they do now. My comment may sound like an ad for either synth. I just though that maybe it might help anyone looking at either of these boards. My live setup in my band consists of the Yamaha P-95, Korg M50 and Microstation, Roland Gaia SH-01 and Roland VR-09. Lots of variation there. My studio boards range from Roland, Korg, Yamaha and Ensoniq. I will play the boards again tomorrow and can report back. I would say that both are great instruments and it is amazing what you can get for $1,000 these days. I remember when getting something of this quality was 2-3 more expensive and usually required buying multiple synths to achieve what just one does now. Be Blessed :)

I'll probably go with Roland. The transition in the strings on the Roland is somewhat lacking. You clearly hear a gap in the transition in the string sounds, which really turns me off. The Yamaha has much better strings. I like the other sounds from Roland. They feel much more intimate and a lot richer. It feels as if Yamaha put a few mics in the ambient room and a few on the instruments and got some reverb into their samples. Both have really nice sounds, but I think Roland still wins.

I'm assuming the Nice Piano on the DS is trying to emulate an upright, at least that is the closest thing from the factory that this keyboard has that sounds like an upright to my ear. The piano pack that you can download from Roland's website has an upright though and I can confirm it's amazing! I usually play with the Rock DS, I like how it has less low end and cuts through. I was torn between the DS and a couple of other keyboards in the price range but I'm so glad I got it. I love it very much.

Hi, I'm looking for an 88 keyboard with graded weighted action for piano playing, but I'd like to use it as synthesizer as well. I prefer a lighter weighted action as that feels more natural to me and closer to acoustic pianos I've tried. It's a tricky one. I've got the DS88 and it's an amazing keyboard but I find the keybed slightly too heavy making glissandos and really fast or repetititive playing a bit of a pain compared to the touch-sensitive but non-weighted keyboard. If going to a gig I take both for that reason, for example playing more keyboard numbers like Superstition or Green Onions on my non-weighted Yahama keyboard and piano style pieces like Don't Stop by Fleetwood Mac or Honky Tonk Woman on the Roland.

I'm looking to buy an MX88 now that the price has dropped. What I need is a synth, like the old Alessis QS8 that's easily programmable with multi layers and splits in the same programme. So far as I've been able to ascertain, the MX88 seems to only be capable of 3 layers and one split per programme, unless hooked to a P.C? If anyone knows whether, or not, it's possible to programme it with more than 3 sounds and splits at a time, save the settings for easy call up in a live situation, I'd be really grateful if you could let me know, as I've been unable to find one in a store and the one time I asked for advice in a store, I was met with blank confusion! ;O) Cheers.

After watching and listening to videos, and reading the PDF manuals for over a year now, I have decided on the Roland. Though I am currently a Yamaha P95 player/owner now and will continue to be, The MX series has one very serious flaw: EDITING MUST BE DONE IN SOFTWARE NOT ON THE INSTRUMENT. This is unacceptable, making a keyboard that depends on a 3rd party software to make it function past the simplest edits is not worthy of my money. What happens 5 years from now when I upgrade to Window 14 and the editing software does not follow? I take my keyboards seriously and wish to keep them for a lifetime, but the ones I can't edit or have terrible sound gets sold eventually, like my Casio XWP1 and Yamaha NPv80. The sounds are acceptable on both the MX and JUNO but because the Roland does not need help from software it is the only choice! Another massive flaw in Yamama's thinking is eliminating the 5PIN MIDI DIN connectors on their P115 piano, I will never buy another keyboard without the 5PIN MIDI DIN.

there is an orchestral soundpack for the roland ds which is outstanding and i never heard smthg like this in this pricerange. imo e-pianos are also better on the roland. perhaps it's just a question of which samples they (roland and the community around the ds ) have choosen. they seem to fit better to my taste. another point on the downside for yamaha is, there is too much effect of a not so good sounding effectsprocessor on a lot of the sounds.

@@MasterYugiMoto you would probably say the same for Yamaha's MODX and MOXF - all of these keyboards are made to appeal to as many different folks as possible Th sounds I use in my own Juno are mostly custom patches I made from scratch and a few edited factory patches. 98% of the factory sounds are of little use to me, lol A lot of us synthesizer lovers tend to replace or forgo factory presets and fashion our own patches for our own tastes and ends. Another way to look at it is: factory presets are the demos to give you a (rarely thorough) preview of what the instrument can do, and it is up to you to get what you want out of it on your own. Some synthesists straight up hate factory presets altogether. One special individual was all, "a proper synth shouldn't even have presets." The gent probably knows his patch design well enough and does a bunch of simple vintage synth sounds. But 99% of past and present synths have presets or ability to save presets.

@Jason75913
@Jason75913 3 жыл бұрын
@@MasterYugiMoto depends on what you want There's all kinds of parameters that govern expressivity, brightness and warmth, hardness, and more of the sound. All of these synth keyboards are fundamentally _subtractive synthesizers_ in which they start off with whatever bright samples/waveforms and then take away from them to shape the sound (with a filter) and modulate how they behave over time (amplitude). Most of the piano patches, for example, have multiple velocity layers, meaning that depending on how hard you strike a key, you'll trigger a certain, and different, sample layer. This helps simulate a more nuanced and accurate sound. There's more to it regarding filter keytracking and other tidbits. As far as acoustics sounds, they don't get much better than whatever you have already in the keyboard. One of my custom patches is the St. Strings or so patch, it is normally designed not to sustain for as long as you want, but I changed that for my use. I also often shape the sound a bit more with the Equalizer insert effect, or "MFX" in Roland keyboards. I often like to take whatever harp preset I like best and add a subtle acoustic bass layer (within the same preset) as well as change the TVF and TVA envelope generators (or _EGs_ ) to give the sound a bit more punch. Most of my custom patches, or presets, are custom synthpads or synth plucks, basses, and leads. I play in a church as well as produce techno, ambient, and EDM music.
