Roland MC-707 Synth Bass Sound Design (Analog Style) ZenCore

Continuing the sound design tutorials for MC-707. This time into Synth Bass Sound Design of the Analog modeled variety.

9:07 - the older engine (Fantom/SonicCell) had a partial structure that allowed you to run the oscillator through the filter twice with a drive booster in the middle, enabling some really nice vintage sounds. I really do wish they would bring that structure back as it would sound really cool with these new modelled filters.

Oh whoa! That is what would help 'rage' up these tones. or vintage - yah! Which Fantom had that?

Yes! The Roland xp series and Mc 909 had that synth structure as well. Had great potential to add character to the sound. Miss that. The saturator efx does get close to the quality of that as it has a pre and post filter parameter that works with the filter within the efx. The new update also added the phonograph efx that the mc909 had and adds really nice distortion.

@@FenixSongMusic whoops, sorry I completely missed your question - the filter structure was available in the Fantom X series, which the Sonic Cell's internal engine is based off on.

Saturator efx allows you to add distortion pre and post filter 🙂 (Using the filter in the efx). I like that you mention the more “hidden” distortion efx (warm saturator, tone fattener, etc). I really wish they would add another screen/layer on the osc “func” edit to include the Fat parameter - so I can avoid having to go to partial edit. The only problem with the VCF FILTER is that you lose considerable amount of volume when the resonance is truned up - but thats what makes it sound nicer when higher levels of resonance are added - trade off I guess.

This groovebox would be a great sound design tool if Roland would let you map more than 4 params to midi cc.

I would check out this chart: static.roland.com/assets/media/pdf/MC-707_MIDIImpleChart_eng03_W.pdf ... you can assign those 4 knobs to some of the deeper parameters not available in the Midi Implementation, but all the basic params are as Midi CCs (like Volume, Pan, Filter Cutoff, etc). Hope that helps.

@@FenixSongMusic I'm looking for a way to have hands on access to ADSR and LFO speed, CUTOFF and Resonance. The 4 cc limit renders that impossible.

Why do the table parts always drown out the bass is every preset. Week 3 with my 707 and seriously looking at Korg now.

@@FenixSongMusic sorry. Treble parts. I figured it out. Need to use internal EQ to adjust for particular sound output. Aka… my speakers were too tinney.
