Hello, SongCat Hiro here.
In my last video, we compared the sound of PC's default sound card with that of Roland MT-32.
Having appeared in 1987, Roland's MT-32 made us realize that we could compose nice music at home with great sound.
Following MT-32, many companies released various midi sound modules.
And the format was standardized to make it easier for us to create our own music.
MT-32 was released in 1987, before the standardized midi format, General MIDI, was established.
With PC games with external sound capabilities released every year, MT-32 was a big hit to enjoy games with more exciting sound.
More than 30 years have passed and now no one uses MT-32 any more.
But how did it actually sound?
I would like people watching my videos to know more about it and I prepared demo songs and a game music.
The first song is Demo Song for CM-64.
CM-64 was also a midi sound module, released after MT-32 in a package product called "Mu-jiro".
I edited the demo song to fit MT-32's profile.
When I heard this song on MT-32 for the first time, I was impressed that we could produce such a good sound using a PC.
I felt that was really a dawn of PC music.
The beepy sound we had enjoyed until then suddenly became out of date.
The next song is Canyon, which came with windows 3.0.
I used this song on MT-32 in my last video but in fact the sound was not what the composer meant it to be.
This song was sequenced in General MIDI format but MT-32 can't play it correctly unless you modify the midi file for MT-32.
So this time, I edited it so that MT-32 can read it correctly.
If you are interested, please go to my last video and check how it sounded before the correction.
The last song is Feena from Nihon Falcom's game "Ys I".
I think many people used MT-32 to play game music.
This game is not optimized for MT-32.
So I sequenced the music myself since the musical pieces of Ys are so good.
Falcom later released many different arrangements of music of Ys.
But I sequenced it to match the sound of my PC, EPSON PC-286US, which I enjoyed listening to back then.
Now no one uses MT-32 any more, but to me, its sound reminds me of the time when I started to create music on PC.
In my future videos, I will compare other midi sound modules and soundfonts.

Hello from Japan! I'm Japanese living in Japan.
I love music and singing. I used to be ranked as the World No.1 singer in a Karaoke website.
(Now the website is gone due to their financial difficulty.)
I sing and play my favorite songs just randomly, mainly Japanese, American and European oldies, classical and film music.
The BGMs used in my videos are midi performances sequenced, played and recorded by me on my PC and midi instruments.
