The Roland MX-1 is a digital mixer built to work with a combination of different instruments, but especially with Roland-branded USB-specific equipment like the AIRA series, or Roland Boutique series. It's got some unique features like TR-style effect-sequencing, and simulated side-chaining effects... but in some areas I have found a little frustrating.
The day they announced the Roland MX-1 I pretty much knew it was for me. I was already a committed AIRA user with the System-1, TB-3, and TR-8... the MX-1 seemed like a no-brainer with audio/MIDI over USB and additional inputs for my gear.
It's been almost 4 years since getting that 1st MX-1, and my set-up has grown exponentially since then, with more synths and machines, including 2 more MX-1s.
There are strengths and weaknesses to anything, and I try and touch base on what makes the MX-1 unique as compared to other mixers, especially as it fits into my setup, with its playable 'instrument-like' abilities; but also I'll spend some time talking about where it has left me wanting... you know, like a review of some kind.
It's a 4-years-in review!!
