I bought the kawai mp11se for one reason.....I wanted a digital piano that came as close as possible to the sound of an acoustic piano.... and the key-action to go with it.... yes its heavy...the benefit of that is , that you are a becoming a muscular beast of a man yourself if you carry it around frequently...😄

Thanks for the very intelligent review. The Mp11se is exactly what I needed. I have a Korg Kronos, but unfortunately I didn't really care for the piano sounds, the main thing I use. Now I have my MP11se as my main board, and I the second tier of the stand sits my Kronos. Being able to play the Kronos using the MP11's key bed is outstanding. Also, since I don't go anywhere with my instruments, they are permanent fixtures in my home studio. I don't care if the MP11 weighed 175 lbs, it has found it's forever home. Thanks again for your review.

I updated to the RD2000 from the 800, primarily because of the ability to connect to soft synths. There's so much you can do with the RD2000. Some of the sounds were for me, not quite there. But the ability to mold these sounds through tonal control and the effects negated these issues.
@TopWorldPiano4 жыл бұрын
THANKS FOR YOUR EXCELENT REVIEW! I'm a professional pianist, very difficult to be pleased by any digital keyboard. I've always been fan of Yamaha, and have had almost all their stage pianos (CP-4 my last one). My last Roland was the RD-600 which made me promise myself I'd never buy Roland again (sound was good in its time, but key system was weak and cheap, breaking in every performance!). All I look for when buying a keyboard is a GREAT AND NATURAL piano sound that responds EXACTLY to what I picture in my mind in terms of sound color and intensity. I've owned the RD-2000 for one year. Though in the store I wasn't crazy about the sound I fell in love with the most FABULOUS ACTION ever found in a digital stage piano. Although this action is not a heavy as I would've liked, it is extremely responsive, and I decided to buy this instrument not just for this, but because after a thorough exploration of the manual in the store, I realized it was posible to PERSONALIZE every single V-Piano Technology sound (the best pianos in the instrument), not just in terms of EQ, effects, hammer noise, string resonance, damper noise, damper and cabinet resonance, key off sound and resonance, lid, etc., but specially in terms of INDIVIDUAL VOICING of each of the 88 keys! You can change in every key, separately, the timbre OR CHARACTER of the sound, from dark and mellow to bright and crispy, the individual VOLUME and even the individual TUNNING of each note you play!! This is just fantastic and never before found in any other keyboard. I've spent hundreds of hours doing this during the last year in just my 6 favorite acoustic pianos. The results are just AMAZING!! IT FEELS, RESPONDS AND SOUNDS just like a REAL GRAND PIANO (actually like 6 different real grand pianos!), exactly designed to my personal taste, but ONLY AFTER ALL THIS WORK. At the end I'm really happy now with this instrument. I can make MUSIC with it and be able to communicate my feelings and emotions almost as exactly as I do with a real quality grand. Obviously it is possible to save all these personalized sounds in an external USB. My only question/complain is... Why Roland musicians and designers didn't do this in the Factory and released an instrument with gorgeous factory sounds??? I'm sure a lot of sales are lost because of this. A real shame! Most employees at music stores don't even now how configurable the RD-2000 sounds are! And most musicians don't have the patience or time to do it. Finally, I just want to tell you how much I enjoy your playing. You´re an excellent pianist with enormous sensitivity. Congratulations!

Honestly, and even if it is subjective, considering the action of the rd 2000 as the most qualitative pianistically speaking is not very objective.The kawaii mp11se is renowned for having one of the actions closest to acoustic pianos at the price of certain concessions (weight). Of In addition, the piano sounds of the kawaii mp11se are certainly less customizable but are extremely precise. I understand that we have preferences but an acoustic piano is not customizable, that's the idea here: a sound as close as possible to an acoustic piano quite simply.

@MerriamPianos4 жыл бұрын
@@spada60 I think it would be fairer to say that the PHA-50 and RHIII are different but equally good actions (The RD2000 and MP7se actions), so I'd never deny someone's right to choose between those two, I consider them to be in the same class of quality and sensitivity. The wooden key action on the MP11se is the biggest reason I would have preferred to have it, which I definitely think of as being a class 'up' from either the PHA-50 or RHIII. I've played the RHIII on gigs, and while I'd prefer to play a classical show on it, the 'pound-it-out' kind of fusion and R&B gigs I find myself on just wound up being better suited to the PHA-50. Action's a big deal to me, so hence the decision. Also, I can't agree with the statement about quality of other sounds - once you get out of the EP / AP / Pads area on the MP7se, I definitely prefer the Roland - again this is a preference, but this was the secondary decision. If I'm giving up the top preferred wooden action and I'm going into a full stage instrument, what was the best balance of sound selection, action, and function, and for me and my situation, the RD-2000 was the solution at the time.

After watching every available video i could regarding these two stage pianos, I decided to buy both; the Roland for gigs, and the Kawai MP11se for my small studio, running it through a pair of Yamaha HS8 studio monitors. This my musician friends, it a dream combo and I highly recommend pulling the trigger on both if you can afford it. The MP11se manual is not very good, quite confusing, but available KZbin videos such as this one make it much, much easier to learn each one respectively. The MP11se is much faster and easier to learn as it's much more intuitive, and, of course, much less complicated than the RD2000. A lot of keyboards are starting to use large touch screens which I hate because they are not necessary and provide a needless distraction. Much thanks for providing this video, I'm in heaven with these to distinctive, high quality pianos. FYI, I replaced my Yamaha C2 grand piano with these two keyboards. Now I have a lot more room, no more tuning issues, along with endless musical options and diversity! Cheers!

Starting at around 6:20, you outlined the three different sound sections (aka "sound modules") in the MP11SE - "acoustic piano", "electric piano" and "sub". You said that this layout was quite different to Yamaha and Roland, but a lot closer to Nord. I was puzzled by that comment. The Yamaha CP88 had been on the market for a year by the time your video was posted, and the CP88 layout is almost identical to the MP11SE. The CP88 also has three sound modules, and the names of those three sections are almost identical to the MP11SE - "piano", "electric piano" and "sub". Your comment may have been accurate for earlier Yamaha models like the CP4 and CP40, but it is not applicable to current model Yamaha stage pianos. Any thoughts?

ok, you are one of the best if not the very best piano reviewer on the tube, and that's more of a fact then it is a compliment. You should review the Kawai MP7SE. If you did already, I couldn't find it. From the video, it would appear you really LOVE playing the Kawai, much more than the Roland, I understand you chose to get the RD2000 for yourself because of the excessive weight of the MP11SE (...everything is "portable" with a truck and a crane...), BUT the Kawai MP7SE is a very similar instrument, has the RH3 (plastic) action (which is way better than the Roland's) instead of the GF, so it weighs the same as the RD2000. Has like "250 something" kick ass sounds, an amazing "4 drawbar Hammond", nice effects, great master keyboard functions, 4 overlapping sounds/keyboard split point (for custom combinations), a user-friendly switch/knobs/sliders panel (quick and easy to use)... and more. Personally, I wouldn't hesitate in choosing that one over the Roland, or should I say, over any other stage pianos on the market at the present time. I believe it to be the best PRICE/performance/portability/features "COMPROMISE" available at the moment in the stage piano field. (of course, a Casio PX-S3000, weighs a bit more than a guitar on top of being very slim, so one can carry it around quite easily, but... it's quality is "pretty far" from the MP7SE league...) Who needs the RD2000 "1100 sounds", of which I'm sure most of them are totally useless? IMHO, when it comes to digital pianos, Kawai is getting more and more on top of everyone else, especially for the quality/price ratio, overpasses Yamaha, too, which has been my favorite for all my life. When it comes to Roland, instead, I find they can't keep up... I just can't make myself to like their stuff, bad keyboard actions, synthetic fake-ish sounds, complicated/uncomfortable user interfaces and so on... AND, last but not least: pricey, no bang for the buck. Personal opinion, of course, but... I believe there is "some truth", in it

I personally find it tends to be on the software side on whether it's an easy fit or not - for example, I generally use Logic most of the time for DAW software, and their auto-learn automation function will grab any of the knobs on the RD2000 easily...makes software control really easy. That is down to the subjectivity and preferences of the player. They are both excellent digital pianos though! :)

Personally, I think these are the best 2 stage pianos out there. Primarioly form the keybed POV. The Kawai is the best availble and the RD is the only thing that gerts close... RD is better at integrating other sound sources, while the Kawai has a better Piano sound. Ultimately though weight is a big deal for stage use. The Kawai is a LOT heavier than the RD - which is just about mangeable...for home/studio Id go Kawai, for stage the RD.

I certainly agree! These are two powerhouse stage pianos! Having access to both of them would be the best solution! ;)

Hi! Brent here! A keyboard amp, like something from the Roland KC line, pairs really nicely with the MP11SE in my experiences. :)

Hi, i must say, you are the best. No one on youtube give more detailed reviews than you! Thank you for your excelent work 🙏🏻 I am a professional pianist and is very hard to find the right stage piano for me. I love the roland pianos... but...i stay with Kawai because i have some trouble with the Roland...1st reason is - fast one note (key) repetition... I have in my house acoustic grand piano to compare it with the roland. The fast one note repetition on the Roland is very bad. Kawai is much beter ... 2nd is the sound. The Roland sound is nice to play at home, but after i was trying the roland with my band (we use inear system), the sound was very bad... I try diferent settings, but the sound of the piano was so unclear. Not only for me, but also for my drummer, bass player and everybody in my band. After some songs i take the Kawai and we are smiling ... I dont understand why the Roland sounds nice at home and for solo playing, but in band and with other instruments, it was soo unclear... Maybe this help somebody who want to buy the Roland to play with band...I was using 10 years ago the Roland RG1 and this piano was nice to me... But now the Kawai is the way for me... One question... is there a way to play some VSTi with VPC1, but not from PC or mac... I need some 100% working solution (hardware unit where i can load the vsti) because i need it for the live concert (performance)

I think I know why your struggling with the sound of the Roland in a band, its something I noticed recently when listening to different reviews on Rolands vs other piano's. When you play an instrument, say like a brass instrument. The player hears something different than his audience because he gets so much more resonance than who he is playing too. Kawai's sound file for me sounds like its from the listeners prospective, the Roland comes from more of the players prospective. That is the reason why I believe the Roland is more geared to a soloist or a piano singer kind of setting. In a band it needs to be background music and its competing for the lead.

@@JozefHollyPiano I grew up around music thru church and played Trumpet throughout my youth. My parents when I was younger wanted me to take piano lessons and I bucked against it. Since then I've always wished I would have learned it because of the amount of theory it teaches. I think it would have helped me when it came to adlib stuff and in turn made me a better instrumentalist. I'm older now, have plenty of time on my hands so I started looking for a decent piano that wouldn't offend my ear too much. Anyway, have someone or even yourself and start playing a roland and if you just think about the point of reference for the sound your hearing, it kinda puts you in the middle of it making you the instrumentalist. Then play the same thing on a Korg, Kawai and others and thing about the point of reference and it places it away from you. Your no longer the focal point. Its like playing in a band with a soloist that hasn't learned to be part of the whole. Instead want to be the lead no matter what they are playing. Rolands sound for me is absolutely beautiful which is why I'm probably going to pick up the FP-10 when I can actually find one. Because I have no intention of playing it with a group, its for me to learn on and I like being the lead in that scenario.

Steer clear of the VPC it gives you nothing extra but takes away all control/sounds options -it does not even offer a better keybed - altho Kawai on its website says it does, but under FAQ says it does NOT - cannot trust this company as a result altho I was close to going for it

You should comper the rd 2000 to the kawai mp7se. Not to mp11se. Same weight sames sounds same function. And the kawai is better.

I was looking to buy a VPC1 but then there’s no sounds so if I want to practice then unnecessarily I have to on my computer, which not a good idea. Both has a good key action, I have checked and read many reviews but then sad part is I don’t have choice because in India this 2 instruments are not in demand so Kawai people don’t keep in stock and no demo facilities. I also have a one more question is MP11se key action is better than a VPC1? And midi information is as good as VPC1 in MP11se? Because i also wants to use VSTI, I have heard Kawai VPC1 triggers very nicely specially for piano sounds and vast difference we can feel then a other midi controllers. See if you can help me because I have decided to go with MP11se Without the demo and it’s huge amount and no return facility in my country. Thank you so much! 🙏

Hey you are the best demonstrator always helpful to make a decision. You are a great Pianist and very honest when it’s comes to comparison. I have checked many reviews and I am still a confused which one should I go for but Kawai MP11se my first choice only because of top class key action, I haven’t get chance to try this instruments..I just wanted to know what’s the key weight? It will be great if you can reply me. Thank you so much!

Hi Stu. Thank you again for your professional video! I love your videos! These two pianos are really beasts! I am not a professional musician, I only attach great importance to an acoustic piano sound that is as natural as possible with a digital piano. With these two pianos, however, I have the feeling that I first have to go to university in order to be able to serve these two beasts at all...! How would you, with regard to the piano sound, for example, classify the FP90 in comparison to these two beasts? Better? Equal? Worse?

Neither of these pianos are exactly the type of instrument that you can carry under you arm and walk to the gig with, but the extra weight is definitely worth what they offer in terms of tone, touch, and features!

It is the old problem of all Kawais: excellent workmanship and feel, but very bad, musty, muffled piano sounds without any brilliance - as if you had put a heavy felt coat over the piano. Why Kawai won't finally be able to generate at least one single decent piano sound will always remain a mystery to me.
