A few things to try. Must hold down more than 1 note. If there are dashes in the display it's getting a midi clock, but expects a start message from something like a drum machine. If VCA trigger switch set to LFO then change it to Gate + Trig...my upcoming tips/tricks video will show more about LFO triggering.

Thanks for this. I still don't understand why Roland buries all these features behind cryptic key combinations/menu diving that you would never be able to figure out just from looking at the front panel. Thank you for the great explanation! I have a question you may be able to help me with. If I have a sequencer connected to the midi input, will the SH-01A's gate output mirror the external sequencer's midi clock rate (e.g. 24 ppqn), or will it put out clocks based on the internal note lengh setting (e.g. 1/4 notes, 16th notes, etc.). Thanks in advance if you are able to help!
@gstormelectro7 жыл бұрын
The SH-01A default setting for Midi Clock Source Sync is "Auto", which means incoming midi timing would over-ride the internal clock. This behavior can be changed by in the system settings so the SH-01A is either always using internal clock or the LFO. Whatever the master setting - the SH-01A sequencer also obeys its own resolution "scale", change this by holding down any arpeggiator button and turning the tempo knob..

Just got mine ( used ) and testing it following your guide - with the K-25M keyboard fitted and LFO rate down to zero - no led lit - if i play a note then i get a sound related to the key i have pressed but then randomly the rate led will light and the note will change without touching the rate slider control ? Is this normal for the 01a please ? A short press of the key - a crochet - the tone is ok .Great review thanks.

Great tutorial. thank you very much. One question: what is the best type of cable to use with the output? stereo 3.5 jack to mono 1/4 inch jack? or to stereo? balanced or unbalanced?
@gstormelectro6 жыл бұрын
Depends what you're sending its signal. I send to eurorack and just use TS-to-TS 1/8" cables, or if you're sending to an amp this is just fine. When going to a mixer you'll have the opportunity to use TRS 1/8" to TRS 1/4", I haven't tried this yet. FWIW the main out is a stereo jack.

Great question. I didn't see in the manual any way to sync the LFO to the internal or MIDI clock. I've posted this question in the Roland Clan forum. If nothing else I could see it being added in a future update.
@HazeAnderson6 жыл бұрын
I don't believe it currently can do that. I do know that on the Volca Bass you can sync the LFO to the tempo, which can be driven by an external MIDI controller. Hopefully this can be done with the SH-01a with a future update, because is nice. :)

really helpful video thanks. wonder if anyone can help with a issue i have. i have tr08 trigger to ext clock in of sh01a then a 303 clone midi'd from the sh01a however the 303 is playing as per the trigger from the tr08 and not its usual normal tempo. is there a way to bypass this trigger so that the 303 plays fine whilst the sh01a is playing from the trigger of the tr08? thanks
@gstormelectro6 жыл бұрын
Maybe send midi out of the tr08 to midi in of the 303. That way it still gets the start/stop message and stays in sync, but plays from its own internal sequencer.
@zyxbotcba6 жыл бұрын
thanks G man, appreciate you coming back to me, alas the 303 only has one sync port so im baffled. have tried putting 303 before and after the sh01a bu always a weird sync outcome when using that trigger from tr08 ive now bought the tb-03 which has the in and out so will see how that goes. Your tutorials are excellent. Thank you so much! Silly question here. I just got my sh01a tonight and it seems like if I try to bring the lfo all the way down while sustaining a note it never quite settles down. if sh01a sequencer is running via the ext clock in (recieving click tempo from another device) - is it possible to then use midi out to sync another device at the same tempo as the ext clk in? or if you use EXT CLK IN then all midi is overridden? i have a dr110 that has accent trigger out - and the sh01a ext ckk in works well with that - but my tt303 does not have tempo in - so im hoping to get the tempo via midi from the sh01a - but i suspect it wont work like that.
@gstormelectro3 жыл бұрын
I sold mine so I can't try. Using external clock input likely does not generate midi clock out message. It may be easier to find a clock-to-midi-tempo device/sequencer to go between the DR-110 accent trig out and SH-01A midi in tempo. Or sample the DR-110 sounds into something like Digitakt that plays nice w/ other gear.

1/8" mono to 1/4" mono cord. Stores carry stereo 1/8-to-1/4 cables, they may suffice.
@TommyTermens6 жыл бұрын
thanks for this great video! I have a fast question: what kind of jack do you use from the 1/8 output to your interface mono 1/4 input? I am not sure if I should use a 1/8 TRS to 1/4 TS cable; a 1/8 TRS to a double 1/4 TS cable and just use one of the 1/4 TS jacks... or what... please help me out !
@gstormelectro6 жыл бұрын
What I do is use a 1/8 TS to 1/4 TS. The tip is the signal and jacks ring tab goes safely to sleeve, ground. I got mine from radio shack before they went defunct, and music stores don't carry anything like this. Maybe try the modular shops like perfect circuit or amazon. Or wire up your own using one 1/8 and one 1/4. Your other suggestion works just fine as well, the loose cord could be annoying.
@TommyTermens6 жыл бұрын
thanks a bunch, I'll do the TS to TS option then.
@TommyTermens6 жыл бұрын
I looked at this on Amazon and I found 2 good options, one of them has the TRS on the minijack side and another has the TS side on both. Both have a TS on the 1/4 side. In my country the one with the TS is more expensive than the one with the TRS. Will there be any ground or signal problems as you state if I get the 1/8 TRS to 1/4 TS? Here's the link: a.co/4V6QgK0 thank you and sorry for my ignorance.
@gstormelectro6 жыл бұрын
I would steer clear of the product link you sent. I went to the product Q&A section and the the two signals on the input TRS side are shorted together. Don't know if you need 10' long, but if so then the Hosa CMP-310 is the one you want, only 50 cents more - not sure if they have it where you are at.
