Roland TR-6S | What Makes it Special?

There are many occasions when I want to start "Bustin' Rhymes" over this and I'm no rapper! At times I feel like we're trapped in a 1980's dream (or nightmare depending on your viewpoint) and we can't wake up!

I've had the TR-6S since it was released because I pre-ordered it. I love it. I outfitted mine with Samples of all of my favorite Vintage Drum Machines (Oberheim, Sequential, MXR 185, Yamaha, Alesis) and the real fun starts when you program your own patterns and use the ACB controls, motion, parameter locks and probability! It's an awesome six track Drum Machine that I feel like is the best value for under $500. It also has built in Analog Drum sounds that don't sound like Roland Classics, so I feel like I have no need for any other Drum Machine (Except my Akai Tom Cat because it's rare like Charizard.) The only complaint I have is the limited Sample memory. It can only store about 150 Samples so you have to build your kits wisely and not keep too many extra Samples in the Memory. Other than that, it's my favorite modern Drum Machine and I'm very satisfied with it.

Have you noticed noise when using USB as a power source and the noise will only be in the 1/4 inch outs

@@jonathanulery1610 Yes, its an issue with all of the boutique models. There is unwanted noise when using USB Power on all of the outputs. The solution is rechargeable batteries or to drill a hole in the unit for an alternate grounded power supply.

@Alfred Dawson well my SE02 makes no noise I use the power adapter that was included but my TR6S makes noise only through the quarter inch outs headphone jack is fine but I found 2 different fixes there's a shielded usb cable you can use 65USD or what I did was instead of plugging USB into PC I plugged it into a wall adapter I don't use the USB for anything but a power source

@@jonathanulery1610 You're right, TR-6S and MC-101 are AIRA series. I have the same issue with my JX-08 Boutique also when powered via USB-C.

Does the mc-707 or 101 sound the same or does the acb sound notably different then the TR-6s or 8s? I know the 101 and 707 are based on the zencore engine.

It’s a bit Apples and Oranges. The MC grooveboxes are zen-core synths, but the drums are all sample based. The TR-6S and 8S are dedicated drum machines that feature 3 different sound engines: analog/digital modeling (ACB), FM drum synthesis, and samples. With ACB and FM you can tweak and customize the sounds in ways you can’t with a static sample. The MC-101/707 have a lot Roland drum samples, but the 6S and 8S are designed to be a close digital replica of the original machines with similar options like changing the ‘snappy’ on the snare for instance, plus the FM engine makes sounds not available on any other Roland device.

Wait a second...I just noticed something...about that "TUNE" knob: Is this tune function available for all the internal sounds? Because that would mean that you can tune all the TR-707 sounds on that thing! Yes you can tune the 707 sounds on the TR-6S. The circuit modelling approach lets Roland extend the parameters beyond their orignal limitations. To get tuning on an orignal 707 you need to modify/bend its circuits.

@Sean Tubridy right I forgot the tr8 had 11 my bad but last Thursday I went to sweetwater and bought the tr6s the thing is a monster I cam produce a. Entire track with it and I'm not talking a minimal track either they wanted 399 I said all I got is 400 and they did it lol

you mentioned several times that the TR-6S has all the classic Roland drum sounds, it does not, have you ever heard of the TR-77, CR-78, CR-8000 or the DR-110? those 'Classic sounds' are not in the ACB or sample instrument library on this drum machine

Wrong, the TR6s is not a 606 it is a mini TR8s, the 6 comes from the fact it has 6 channels that is why it has a 6 in it's name, you made an entire video around a philosphy of a misconception dude, wtf.

@@SonicVibe You know the 8 is a reference to 808 so and the 6 is a reference to 6 tracks so why the sarcasm? Roland have always had confusing naming conventions, it's not my fault this content creator didn't do 5 minutes research and jumped to a conclusion. You can email Roland and complain if it bothers you that much.

I normally find your videos interesting and educational. A limited drum machine is perfectly fine, but dude - not mentioning lack of: song mode, unquantized recording, individual puts... That’s just weak. Roland has made some very stupid choices on this one. Informercials... no thank you.
