Roland TR-8s Tutorial: Programming Auto Fills

A brief video on how to program the 2 auto-fills on the TR-8s. Creating your own frees you from having to use a variation as a fill.

Dmux Thanks! I try to keep it simple and hopefully not boring. Your comment is exactly why I started making them. The manual is nice, but not everyone likes to learn from it. Most other videos I saw were packed full of info, but I would forget what they taught in the beginning by the time I reached the end. I want people to question how to do something, find one of my videos, quickly learn it, and get back to creating.

Thanks! Is it possible to edit the Auto Fill? The Auto Fill was perfect for the song I was working on except it needed a crash cymbal immediately following the Auto Fill. I couldn't figure out to edit an Auto Fill.

Thanks for sharing this - couldn't find any of this in the manual. Do you know if there's a way of copying a variation into a fill so that the starting point for editing matches one of the variations?

You can assign a variation to a fill. Simply hold the auto fill on button and press the variation you want to be the fill. You can try to copy by pressing copy, select variation source, select fill a or b as destination.

DJ KennyMACK There are only 10 scatter types, and depth adjustment. That will be covered in my next video.

hey @Unit:E! Thanks for the helpful video. I noticed that it seems that in order to edit fill ins, you need to go into the fill in edit mode. However, while in this edit mode, the tr-8s is constantly playing the fill as you are editing it. Is there a way to program fills on the fly while staying on another pattern, similar to how it's possible to modify the B section while still playing the A section?

Unfortunately, you cannot program the fill live while another variation is playing. I can bring that up to Roland. It seems like a good idea.

@@UnitE808 Thank you so much for your videos, every time I get stuck I find a solution for them in the videos! :) Btw for the above problem, the work around I found was to edit a non-playing pattern, and then copy that pattern to fill 1 or fill 2, that way you can keep adding new fills without stopping.

Thank you for this video. My english is not so good but I have a question. Is it possible to make a melody that is longer than 16 steps? For example: My Kick 1 5 9 13 (Loop) My melody 2 4 11 14 15 21 27 32 (Loop)

Yes. Start your melody on Variation A, continue it on Variation B. Press A+B. Press play.

While programming the auto fill, press the last button by the sub button, then press the step you want to be the last.
