Roland TR-8s Tutorial: Scatter

Brief video on how to change the scatter type and depth. I like that it is a more subtle feature to use on the 8s. Note that it is not possible to edit your own scatter type.

Awesome tutorial. I just got my tr8s. I realized I had to hit the #16 pad to get scatter to work every time I switched kits.

Note. Make sure the auto fill in is in scatter ...not fill in one or two. press and hold the auto fill in button (ON). Then press the scatter number 16 button. Then do the above video.

I have a TB-3 and found that when you utilize midi-in on the TR-8s, it will scatter the TB-3 sound as well when using the trigger function. Seems to work on my MV-8000 as well.

Man I wanna get TR8s but the TR8’s simplicity and way scatter works seems so much better and its awesome live. This seems more complex and pain to use.hmmmm can’t decide im getting pretty nasty on TR8 i dont wanna lose that with tr8s

It's not a pain at all, especially using live. Scatter works great on the TR-8S if you dont switch scatter types mid pattern. Even so, it is accomplished quite easily. The fact that any instrument can be on any channel is what seals the deal for me.

I went and bought it and wow, whole different beast. Just watched your video again is there anyway to trigger it like the old TR8 where it just starts soon as you manually trigger it?

@@chrisryan9747 yes. Make sure scatter is set to be the auto fill. Press and hold manual trigger to activate scatter at any time.

Hi! Thanks for the tutorial. Is there any way to use Scatter only for the limited time that you press the "manual trigger" button?. It goes on for a fixed amount of time and I just want it momentarily and stop when I release. thanks!

You can do this - it's an option in the Utility menu. You can choose between "latch" (scatter plays for a fixed amount of time) and "momentary" (scatter plays for as long as you hold the "manual trig" button).

Alexander Almström I made one video showing how to set it up in Ableton Live. It didn't show how to record because I am assuming the viewer understands their DAW and I can't cover all the different ones out there, I only have Live. Perhaps I can make an intermediate tutorial on deeper DAW integration.

Im wondering how it sounds in different time signatures. For example 3/4 6/8 and 7/12 and if manually recorded steps with the right green button could be recorded off grid too, so you could add your own swing into the groove. Thank you

Martin Turner Everything is automatically quantized to the 16 steps. You can do a different time signature using the last step function, but I think the scatter sticks to the 16 steps.

Scatter has 10 different types, it cannot be manually programmed like the fills. Choose the type in your pattern menu.

To scatter, you say choose the variation bank you want the scatter pattern to be based on. Can one choose more than one variation bank from A-H to combine so you can get a scatter patten based on more than one variation bank?

No. Combining variations to make a scatter will not work.

Only way is to set the manual trig to momentary in the utility menu. This way, scatter only lasts as long as you hold the button down.

I really like this scatter effect of the tr-8 and tr-8s. Does anyone know if this king of effect is available as a hardware effect pedal? I couldn't find anything about that.

I think it's more of a midi retriggering, not straight audio processing like an effects pedal would do. You could use a stutter and/or really strong momentary delay, a short loop maybe. Possibly if you can take midi from the tr8s scatter and send it to a different instrument but I don't think this sort of effect is acheivable with analog audio processing like a pedal does.

Yeas, I'm searched for a separate scatter effect, before I used VST Glitch, and I found bastl instruments thyme, it's a monster of glitch's, didn't saw anything like this before

scatter 10 is so badly made. it pauses the music and makes it go out of sync. on the tr8 it was perfect and a great trick while playing live
