I don't think the long matches are too much of a problem if you get a day's rest. But once again because the French Open are the worst, no roof to finish the SF matches the same day and handing over the trophy without a ball being struck to the first SF winner. Not that it was likely Djokovic or Thiem would have beaten Nadal anyway, but playing 3 days in a row doesn't help.

@jameswalker68643 жыл бұрын
The RG 2012 final displayed a superior level than the RG 2021 semifinal, in my view. Both Nadal and Djokovic were younger, in their prime, and fiercely disputed the four sets. In the RG 2021 semifinal Nadal's foot injury pain increased in the last set, and therefore his physical shape was questionable, making it a boring, one-sided last set. In fact, only the third set of the RG 2021 semifinal was close and epic in a true sense of the word. Unfortuantely, Nadal had to skip the rest of the 2021 season due to the aforementioned foot injury.

Well, people seem to 'blink' a lot against Djokovic when they are on the verge of winning. Happened to Nadal (breakpoints deep in the fifth set at Wimbledon 2018, and break up in the fifth set in AO 2012), happened to Federer a few times (obviously), and yeah, Dominic should be proud to join that illustrious list.
@ryanknowles4 жыл бұрын
ashb001 lol I wouldn’t say Rafa blinked at Wimbledon, that was a 50/50 match that could’ve gone either way. I believe Rafa saved some break points early in the 5th so he could’ve been out before 7-7 had Novak converted. Australia 2012 also hard to say a blink match as Novak was in control of that one before Rafa somehow wrestled away the 4th set and carried that momentum to a tenuous one break lead in the fifth. Should he have won it? Probably. But not comparable to Thiem’s choke job IMO. As for Federer squandering match points at Wimbledon ‘19, I’m gonna leave that for the Fed fans to dissect. It was a strange “meltdown” to say the least!
@bujarshabaj72124 жыл бұрын

@@ryanknowles I disagree with you on both examples - Rafa has now *TWICE* lost when *leading* in the fifth set - and regardless of how well he fought in those matches, he should have put them away: AO 2012 to Djokovic and AO 2017 (to Federer). In addition, he actually came very close to losing the USO 2019 after being *up* two sets to love against Medvedev, who was one or two shots away from taking the match. Djokovic seldom loses from a lead, especially as the match goes on.

felt really sad for thiem today after his last slam match vs Shelton. this match took a lot out of him and even then he was dominating rafa in the longer rallies in the final for two sets until he ran put of gas. he gave novak fits in the 2020 AO finals on hard, Rafa at 2018 USO QF, beaten both rafa and novak in the ATP finals. Prime thiem was a tennis monster.

Compare this match and Djokovic's match vs Nadal at Roland Garros 2013. That 2013 Djokovic could play vs both of Djokovic and Thiem from 2019 at the same time and would beat them

What a match with a high quality. Unfortunately, the weather conditions in the first day affected both players and the match. So, we waited until the next day to watch a good tennis. for me, I don't think that playing in such circumstances is a right decision.

The extreme wind did have an effect on the match but that's part of the game, otherwise why are they playing outdoors in the first place.

that's not the point. I want to see high quality tennis in a slam Semi and that was impossible due to conditions. If so many spectators don't show up there is no problem of rescheduling it.

@@Onmysheet that's why they finally installed roofs on all GS center courts. We want to see the best tennis possible and that's only possible if conditions are at least acceptable which was not the case here.

I think the breaks benefitted Djokovic greatly here, with Thiem's biggest strength being his physicality and power, being able to rest and refresh a bit kept him from getting too tired out; it's often we see the fitter player winning on these 5-set matches (like the Murray-Gasquet match) where attrition is the real decider.
@lexigold84484 жыл бұрын
I think with Thiem's solid mindset and talent, if he can minimise his errors he will be a real threat over the next few years, I think he'll win a slam on clay at some point (maybe catching Nadal on an off day)
