The Saturday night co-feature bout on Showtime featuring Rolando Romero and Jackson Marinez has arguably become the most heavily criticized decision of 2020. Romero emerged as the winner by unanimous decision, comfortably securing victory on two scorecards, despite the widespread belief among spectators that Marinez had won the fight.
Wil Esco, our own scorer, gave Marinez a 116-112 edge, and he is not alone in this assessment. Romero's proclaimed victory has faced extensive dismissal and mockery from various quarters, including the Showtime broadcast team, media, fans, and fellow fighters. Marinez expressed his frustration after the fight, stating, "That was pure robbery. I won the fight. I out-jabbed, out-boxed him. You could tell he didn’t think he won the fight right afterwards. It’s a robbery."
While WBA President Gilberto Mendoza Jr mentioned that the WBA would look into the possibility of a rematch, this statement doesn't guarantee its occurrence. It could be a strategy to partially address and partially sidestep the criticism, possibly waiting for the public to move on and forget about the incident.
Heading into the bout, Romero was undoubtedly the "A-side," a prospect promoted by Mayweather Promotions with hopes of becoming a star. However, the general consensus is that Romero was simply defeated by the less celebrated Marinez, whom Romero confidently claimed he would knock out in brutal fashion-a prediction that did not materialize.
The official scores were 115-113 (Don Trella), 116-112 (Glenn Feldman), and 118-110 (Frank Lombardi), all in favor of Romero. Despite this, Romero has expressed his willingness to grant Marinez a rematch, stating after the fight, "I don’t think I had a bad performance. I thought I won the fight. Regardless of everything, I’m the world champ now. I’m happy." WBA President Gilberto Mendoza Jr has indicated that the sanctioning body will consider the possibility of a rematch.

I can't say it was a robbery but I can say it was very close and Martinez should have gotten the win in my opinion he did enough. Rolly did a good job keeping the pressure from the beginning, and kept control of the center of the ring. Martinez was countering alot but was most of the fight on defense and being walked down by all the hard punches rolly was throwing. Rolly did get some very good shots in, the reason I say he lost is because he took too much damage. Rolly has a chin on him for sure, I believe the judges gave it to rolly because he pressured the most and had ring control for most of the rounds.

At 1st When I 1st Watched i Felt Marinez Won Hands Down Then After Watching Again 1/6/24 I'd Aiming To Say It Was Very Close And i Can Only See it Either Being a Draw Or Romero Winning Two Of The Reasons Why I Saw Now 1/6/24 is 1. Romero Was The Aggressor And He Was Landing Alot Within The 1st 6 To 7 Rounds They Had Some Great Exchanges Both Fighter Were Landing Alot Of Power Shots But Just Bcuz the Punches Sound Loud Doesn't Mean The Punches Were Always Landing Romero And We Have To Go Off The Punches That Were Landing Clean in Some Of Those Rounds it was hard To Tell Bcuz they Both Were Going Blow For Blow With Great Exchanges And 2. Listen Just Bcuz Marinez Was Holding His Hands Up At the End Of Each Round Doesn't Mean He Was Winning Those Rounds Maybe His Adrenaline Must Have Just Felt Good Bcuz he was enjoying that type of fight i was rooting for him Too Then i payed Close attention Round By Round The 2nd Time I Watched it The Only I Can Say Marinez Dominated Was The last Round the 12th He looked in some of those other Rounds but I wasn't sure if he won those rounds that's why I can I understand the other guys comment when he said rewatch it And Now I see it The Most u Can Call it is a draw Or U Have To Give it To Rolly Bcuz Marinez Did Good And It Was Close But Not Enough To Win Sad To Say bcuz I actually wanted him To Win!

I remember watching this live. Knew Romero was a hype-job ever since. When he was set to fight Tank it all made sense, therefore I wasn't impressed with Tank for picking him smh. He just got gifted another fight where he failed to put away an OLD man. He's literally PUT in position to sell a (big) fight, but he can't actually beat anyone worth their salt. Ryan's fighting him next, worked out perfectly.

I agree with the judges..count landed punches and power shots ..and it was justified. You 19 -0 and can't knock down 11-0 now you 19and 1 instead of 20-0 and he worked for his 12th victory harder.
