I bought a Seiko Pepsi back in high school because it looked like TM's watch. Many years later I bought a Rolex GMT pepsi for the same reason, although the plastic crystal scared me a bit. I bought the 16750 for around $3500. Now they are around $10,000. I can't believe how much they went up in value. Great investment, but I'm such a Magnum fan, I'd never sell it.

The Pepsi GMT is one of Rolex's best watches. The perfect combination of class, sports, and ruggedness. Selleck also wore a Pepsi in his more recent Jesse Stone films.

Loved Magnum P.I. original show from the 1980's. I remember watching it when I was away at University. And yes, how could anyone not remember Magnum's Pepsi GMT. I'd say that the popularity of the show, and Tom Selleck wearing the GMT made the Pepsi as popular a watch in American culture as James Bond did for the Submariner. In fact for me, growing up and watching James Bond movies and seeing him sport a Rolex Submariner made me want one and I did eventually get one once I turned 40. So, I would say certain shows and personalities can have a huge effect on the popularity of an item. Product placement for companies in films or TV, is the best marketing. It can pay off for them in a big way if a movie or show turns out to be successful at the box office or in ratings.

Magnum is a great show for watch enthusiests. I love the way they wrote this watch into the show. Also earlier in the series Selleck wears a really cool Chronosports diver. It also features what looks like a president, possibly a gold Daytona, and possibly a cartier tank worn by other characters.

I love this GMT, but the Chronosport Sea Quartz 30 he wore in the first 3 seasons, suited his character much better. I just managed to aquire one, after looking for 8 years, with the same dial/bezel/black day-date window configuration. I would honestly not trade it for the rolex :)

*As a commercial diver i've worn everything from the Seiko ''Captain Willard" Prospex, to the Casio $35 dollar stainless-Walmart special and while the Prospex was on the steep end, it still wasn't $3,000+. AND the Casio Stainless dive watch, rated to 660ft, was a good watch. I never worried about losing it, breaking it, or anyone stealing it.

I'm going to be that guy. In the context of the show Magnum receiving that Rolex is anachronistic. His father was a pilot in the Korean War which ended in 53 the GMT wasn't introduced until 54.

Matt Phelan I met both I was at the helipad after taking a helicopter trip around Hawaii, it was the same day that they were filming for Magnum tv series. I met Tom Selleck as he was shuttled between his on site trailer to the set. But I met TC as he parked up his van in the car park , what a lovely man he was he had all the time in the world for myself & my family he was asking us about Scotland and what people thought of the show there & he even shared out a bag of oranges he’d brought with him to the set. I got pictures with him.

I have a Casio duro dive watch with a Pepsi bezel. Even though it is a 60-70$ Casio watch I get a ton of compliments and people asking me what kind of watch it is. It’s an eye catcher. Maybe one day I’ll get the Rolex but until then I’m sticking with the Casio that looks like the Rolex magnum wore.

Was it a 1675? Since Magnum started wearing a Rolex plexi Pepsi in season 4, I was under the impression that it was a early run 16750 MK.1 matt dial with the painted indices. The 16750 was produced from 1981 to 1988 and one easy way to tell it apart from it's elder brother, the 1675 is the hand stack orientation. The 1675 24 hour hand position was on bottom closest to the dial while the 16750 was moved in between the hour and minute hands. Also note the beat rates between the two were different and noticeable in person. The early 1675's (1959-1964) had a caliber 1565 beating at 18000 and the later production 1675's (1965-1980) had a Cal. 1575 running at 19600 bph (hacking introduced 1971) With the introduction of the 16750 introducing the 3075 3075 running a modern 28800 bph with hacking, quickset. What sometimes confuses new collectors is that the 1675 caliber is referred to as either 1565 or 1575 but stamped 1560 or 1570 on the movement itself which can be seen with the case back removed. These calibers are commonly found on the Date just of the same period. The 5 is the GMT variation of each.

I'm confused. Isn't the watch he wears in Blue Bloods the same watch. He said that's the only prop he kept from the show, and he has worn the same watch in the Jesse Stone movies.

I remember when the character Higgins was posturing and effeminate and Magnum could roll with a punch. Fast forward to 2019 and it is the other way around.. But Rolexes still represent what they stand for after all this time.
@cogitaretoo
@cogitaretoo 4 жыл бұрын
Higgins wasn't effeminate; he had class. To an American, that probably comes off as effeminate because American men are so unbelievably insecure about their masculinity.
